Complete tangent but has anyone heard updates on the new Doak par 3? When we were there in March they we were told that Doak and Keiser had marked greens and tee boxes. I haven't heard a peep about it since.

They put it on hold in the 2nd half of 2016 and hadn't heard anything about it since then. Were you told they'd been there in 2017 marking greens and boxes?

A caddie told us they had staked the greens and tee boxes but he didn't say when. We could see some of the stakes from #3 on Trails. The land they have looks really cool with varied, wild, fescue covered dunes covering basically the whole plot.

Neat, thanks for the answer. So they may have been some progress this year after all :)

When were you there? In February this year some caddies said the project was abandoned. But it seems like the information given to employees about any new course projects is variable.

I think I'm learning that as well. Sounds like we may have gotten some varying info. We were there in late March. Strange thing was we could see some stakes on the piece of land they were talking about putting it. The land looks awesome so it would be a shame if it was abandoned. I've also heard rumblings on social media that Doak is ruffling feathers (again) in the industry so maybe he fell out of grace with Keiser? He still hasn't been awarded the 3rd course at Sand Valley after he was beat out for the 2nd course by DMK. Here's a picture of where the par 3 was supposed to be. I marked preserve with a P, Trails #3 with a blue line, and circle the plot for the par 3 in red.

Edit...Ugh, can't get the photo to upload.

Looks like I'm heading back in March and was hoping to get around one last time. Anyone else going or looking to go in March?

I'm hoping to go sometime around then next year. My idea is to wait for what looks like a patch of warm/dry weather, maybe even in late February, and scamper down on a moment's notice for a day or two.

I go down every February, and we had to change weeks for next year due to unavailability of golf/lodging booking 1 year out.

You'll be on your own for food and drink at the Sheep Ranch. No services there at all. Grab some to-go sandwiches from the snack bar and maybe stop in town and get some beers. You probably won't need to worry about refrigeration in November...

Agreed! Just need an ice chest with some sandwiches and drinks and you'll be good for the day! Making your own course is like painting a picture! Poetry in motion

There were a few trolleys out there when I went, but I wouldn't count on anything. You can get around the resort nicely using the shuttle system, but I'm not sure if they will go up to the Sheep Ranch. It's located north of Old Mac, maybe a 5-10 minute drive. I had my own car when I went. You could ask at the pro shop.

Whatever it takes to get there (and back!) is worth the trouble. I wrote a up a separate trip report a couple years ago with some photos, if you haven't already read that.

Edit: I just re-read that posting, and according to me, there was not a port-a-john out there. Memory is the first thing to go.......sigh...

"take that, you miserable little white swine!"
