Jin Young Ko

As much buzz as there is about Jin Young Ko at the moment, deep down I am more impressed with Hye Jin Choi. Her swing is more solid. She came runner-up without ever seeming to find her range on irons. Down the stretch Hye Jin attacked to try and bridge the gap, while most other contenders just hung in there. For example, Hye Jin reached the 540+ yards 16th in 2, although found the right bunker. Both girls birdied, but Jin Young in the more conventional way! I think Hye Jin's power gives her an edge over Jin Young. Although before I get flamed, both are incredible talents, and the two players I was looking forward to watching ahead of the Australian Open.

I also believe Hye Jin Choi will have better results over the next 5 years vs. Jin Young Ko....why?

HJC has over the last 3 years been consistently performing in all the Am and pro events she has entered.

She has worked on distance without sacrificing other parts of her game.

If she can become a better/consistent putter.....watch out.

I can't believe she didn't enter LPGA Q school last year.....unless she was rejected as a 17 year oldby Mike Whan at registration last July??????

Perhaps Hye Jin has sponsorship commitments she needs to addressed with a year on the KLPGA. Either that, or she thinks she can earn a card by winning an event. Finishing 2nd at the U.S. Open would certainly point to that possibility.

  • 1 year later...

Any hype was definitely warranted. She's turned out to be a superstar, except that the U.S. media more or less ignores her. Five wins, including two majors, and 23 top 10's. 2018 rookie of the year. Currently leads the 2019 money list, CME race, Rolex rankings, player of the year, scoring average, and GIRs.

...still hasn't played a bad round in 2019, to my knowledge.

Hasn't missed a cut in 15 events. Worst finish was 29T at the Honda LPGA Thailand. She's played 59 rounds. 42 of them were under par, and 31 were in the 60's. Her worst round was a 77 (+5) at the KPMG. Her 2nd worst round was a 74 (+2). How crazy is that?

Looks like she has had one bad round (as I roll my eyes, lol)

Check out these stats. Are these amazing or what?

Has played 59 rounds this year.

42 rounds under par with 31 rounds in the 60's.

Only 6 rounds higher than 72 and 4 of those were 73.

Her 2 highest rounds of the year are 74 and 77.

Only 3 rounds worse than +1. A 2 over par 74 at the Lotte Championship, a 2 over par 73 at the US Open, and a 5 over par 77 at the KPMG Women's PGA.

I love Jin Young. She has the greatest staredown on the LPGA. Talking about in the follow-through, as she's watching the ball in flight. Jin Young's blue-steel gaze is imperious. Lydia in her prime used to have a similar look in her eye. This look of untouchable confidence, determination, optimism. During this phase of the swing, most players typically make a face, grimace, express uncertainty or displeasure in some way. Not Jin Young. Total silence, total focus, total dignity. Long may she reign.

This thread is acting weird for me. I click on it and doesn't take me to the first new post like any other thread I click. And when I posted about her stats 13 minutes after you did, your post was not there. Strange. But, obviously, great minds think alike, right?

Just for kicks, I took a look at that 77 she shot in the first round of the KPMG.

13 pars and 5 bogeys

12 of 14 fairways

9 of 18 greens

31 putts..

At least her and I have something in common. Her worst round of the year equals my best round of the year.

Another ho hum week. 68, 70, 68, 66. Keeps plugging away. This one almost fell in her lap again. 'Can't win if one isn't near the top, and she's a master at that.

Jin Young was pure brilliance when she won ANA; but she's gifted Evian.

Her real test will begin now; when her chance at history was brutally snatched away.

She's always been as good as any other players on ball striking; what'd stopped her earlier in her career had been her putting. We all know putting is matter of confidence.

Will she continue her extraordinary new putting form of this year; or will this setback reverts her to her norm? We'll find out.

I originally thought she was gifted Evian too. But when I look at how she hit it that day it was an amazing round. But she did get some help with the two people in front of her shooting over par. So I'm not sure what to think.

There was a good article about her after the ANA win. I think her caddie (new late last year or this year) said she needed a bit more distance, more short game shots, and putting. Amazing how quickly she got it together to really take it to the next gear vs. players that motor along with the same thing holding them back (at least relatively speaking) year after year.

Yani Tseng couldn't do anything wrong for almost two years; then the wheels came off.

Confidence is a fragile commodity; we'll see how Jin Young deals with her setback.

Agree, I'm not making any statements about the future. Only that she got better in what was needed to push her over the top (at least for now) vs. just hitting it great and winning once a year.

Yeah, my thoughts ......she never had the lead to herself; always chasing, scratching and clawing to stay in it.....didn't she have a 4-putt double in 2nd round? I commend her for being ultra competitive the week following a sloppy track major win....she must be whipped!

And I too hope not for a yani/lydia fall-off....

There's no way I'd categorize yesterday as a setback. The best players all have tons of 2nd and 3rd place finishes. Did it hurt? Sure, I bet it did. However, missing the birdie putt on 18 turned out to be a non-factor. She played superb golf for 8 rounds in the past 2 weeks. Heck, Minjee and her shot a combined 58 during the final round of the Great Lakes Bay. She currently has a run of 18 straight rounds of par or better, including 13 rounds in the 60s.

My appreciation for Jin Young has grown a lot over the last two weeks. When she first appeared on the scene, challenging Inbee at the 2015 WBO, she actually kind of rubbed me the wrong way. I assumed a lot about her personality, which turned out to be totally wrong. Looking back I was probably just intimidated. I love the way she carries herself on the course, so regal and dignified. The American public might not give her her due but I think the players do. Salas gave herself some credit for shooting a great round in the final group against the world #1, and I agree. I think Jin Young is quietly at least as intimidating as anyone out there, if not more.

She’s fantastic. Great personality. And a beast competitor. I love her reaction on the last green of The Open. Man she was focused on draining that putt up a tier. And when she missed, she was visibly disappointed that she didn’t sink it. Great reaction. I’ll take her as the dominant player on tour any day all day.
