New Mysterious PING Iron that looks like iBlade/G700 Combo

Recommended Posts

Not a driving iron, full set hollow bodied blade size G700 coming in fall...

Why? Who would want that?

Everyone? iblade sized but i200 forgiveness. TMB and p790 have done pretty well

I can't imagine anyone (that buys ping) wanting a players iron that is hollow.

Maybe not, like you say, for someone who is a Ping diehard but I would play this club as a full set. In other words, an aging single digit player who fantasizes about a forgiving, distance, GI "blade" something like the PXG, P790, TMB, would be the target market for this club. I'm super excited about this club....or the idea of it and what I'm hoping it will be. I know that's not Ping's target market right now but that doesn't mean that they don't want a bit of the action in that category. Why not? It kind of makes you wonder if Nicolette and Schweigert (of PXG) hadn't experimented with some of these designs when they were at Ping and just finished the project at PXG.

The hollow iron has always been an enigma. Yes, it’s farther. It’s consistency that has always dogged it. The game/marketing has shifted where many will tolerate inconsistent length if they can get absolute length. Eg if a 25 can get a PW to go 130, even if dispersion is less optimal, that’s better than a 7 iron in the prior set. Length is statistically shown to be a benefit for players who couldn’t otherwise do the same vis a vis same total length of the club.

Players that can hit those modern numbers don’t have the benefit in mid and short irons.

So it is the evolution of the SGI, and if they have solved the consistency problems, will help all players - particularly in long irons.

14 Pings. Blueprints are incredibly good. Fetch is the most underrated putter on the market. Don't @ me.

PXG irons 0311 are hollow last time i checked. Zach Johnson, Billy Horschel, Charl Swartzel, Pat Perez, Ryan Moore and JAmes Hahn are doing just fine.

Lydia Ko uses 0311.. Shes doing ok i suppose.

Wow... pull that right out of its context.

Take a look at some Cleveland HiBores. HISTORICALLY hollow irons have been SGI irons.

Same rubbish with SLIs. 25 years ago, they were terrible. Now, not so much.

Just dropping the Bob Parsons Trophy List isn't "proof", because the whole point of the discussion was that the current batches of hollow irons are no longer problematic. Add the 790s in to that list. But hey, you got to show your Xtreme Golf knowledge. Bravo.

The i200 and iBlade are already a bunch of forgiveness in a sleek package, so I'm curious to see how much more they can actually improve on that.

I don’t understand why they haven’t made an MB? They’ve made S55 and iBlade which are MB size. Just fill in the cavity with all that tech inside and make it look like a straight muscle blade.

I don’t want an 0311 like iron from PING. I want them to make a blade that looks like a Titleist MB but with PING tech. How awesome would that be? Instead, we’ll probably just get a progressive i set with thick soles in the long irons and lots of bounce...

That being said, I’m well aware that an 0311 type iron would sell better, but I’m incredibly selfish and don’t care about what everyone else wants. Powdered Toast Man isn’t a hero that seeks the greater good/doesn’t have particularly good judgment.

If you fill in the cavity you're going to lose some MOI. iblades pack lots of MOI into a small package. Also you need access to the CTP port so you can adjust swingweights.

Yes... but do you see any CTP ports in the pictures of this club? They've done away with it for this design (as well as the G700). It's obviously not necessary for them to adjust SW or make a forgiving club.

Or can they CTP through a toe screw?

Look at the photo. It doesn’t have wide soles. It’s absolutely going to be similar in profile to s55

Moving on then, is this thing going to be cast or forged? I appear to be in the minority, but I'd be happy if it was cast.

I hear ya.

The best SGI hollow body irons I've played all had variable face thickness (Tour Edge). I noticed a marked difference between the TE stuff and HiBore/Altitudes regarding distance consistency.

Not sure how relevant this is to the new PING iron, but I do hope they use the opportunity to use VFT as well (like the 790s). Makes a world of difference in my experience.

Seems to me PING should have saved the "iBlade" name for this iron, seeing as it looks like a blade and the iBlade doesn't.

I'm pretty excited for 3 months from now. Just have to make it through Memorial Day, the summer solstice, and the 4th of July, then wait a few more weeks, and then...bam...

JUST TELL US ALREADY - WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ping didn’t leak it. Ping tried to keep it hidden. The plan has always been an August/September release since beginning of the year. Most reps haven’t seen the club in person

Oh I know. It just doesn’t suit my American consumer side. I’m not well equipped to wait.

?I was thinking the same thing.

People respond to an innocous post with such ferocity, to the point it's laughable.

As if someone was insulting someone personally close to them, not just golf clubs

If the iron is indeed hollow, I wonder what PING will do to improve acoustics? No way PING is releasing a players iron that sounds like a hollow, goo-less iron (or at least I'd hope not).

I think sales sucked on the forged options cause they had other options that performed well. The forged were very pricey for that time in comparison but were a great club.

Yeah--I hit the Ansers and liked them. But egad they were expensive compared to the i20s I got instead.

Looks like the guess of a May arrival after supposedly missing the same Date as the G700 is gone. All the reps. have seen photos but are not sharing them with buyers, and no mention of anything new in recent meetings. Maybe fall or not at all.. If May buyers would have seen a prototype by now.

I've never seen a May date for the i500. i200 is due to be replaced this fa/late summer, and that's where I've always heard them to be released.

Of more interest to me is S54 is on the list so hopefully a return to an S style design

I agree, I'm not sure the iblades were really a big upgrade over the s55. They had more updated lofts with 3.5 gaps in the long irons, that was really the main difference. s55 looked great and was just really durable. If PING releases an S54 I would be all over those.

I noticed they had a few staffers who clung to their S55s and never bagged the iblade.

It let them standardise their inserts, right? I imagine going forward, that's going to be a common component.
