My pro whos tight with the ping guys and just met marty confirmed to me its the i200 replacement. i500. Hollow design i series iron.

Β

Those might be popular ?

Some flavor of the month driver.
Some driving iron for Links courses.

A hybrid to save my bad shots.
Titleist blades when I feel lucky otherwise something more forgiving.
A Vokey wedge or 2.
I hate every one of my 17 putters.

Β

Thank you

Β

Now this thread doesn’t have to endure 4 more pages of people falling over themselves talking about sole width and offset while leading to ridiculous speculation.

Β

The question now is...is it forged?

I have zero interest in a hollow iron, so i cannot see them replacing the i200's in my bag.

Β

But then again, I absolutely love the i200's and can't imagine anything knocking them out of the bag anytime soon.

Β

Would be surprised if they were a direct replacement of the i200's - could see them as more of a model line extension.

not sure why it would be. i200 and iblade are cast

Β

I realize that and I play Ping I's.

Β

Reason I question this is because of one of the pictures on Page 1.

Β

On the backside heel of the iron, it appears to say FORGED

Β

It certainly would be a departure from the basics of the I line but I thinks its the direction Ping needs to go with the product.

Β

Also, to compete and appeal to the customer that would normally buy P790s, PXG, they would need to go forged.

Β

For Ping to go forged it would certainly get attention.

I don't think Ping needs to go the forged route, honestly. Their cast and heat-treating process feels just as good, if not better, than some forgings out there. They tried the forged route in the Anser and Anser 2013, and frankly, the sales sucked. You rarely see a set of them in people's WITB anymore, when it was basically a forged i20/i25, what's not to like? Ping should keep it cast and not worry about it. They have a good thing going.

I think sales sucked on the forged options cause they had other options that performed well. The forged were very pricey for that time in comparison but were a great club.

Β

I had the 2nd iteration of Anser irons and they were great in my opinion. I came from the i20s and I thought the feel was noticeably better. I think the reason sales slumped was the price point. $1350 for a set was a very expensive iron set in 2012-13. Now with $3500 PXG irons and other manufacturers putting out irons in the $1000-$1300 range, I don't think sales would be as bad.

Β

I just ordered i200s and they feel outstanding for a cast club. I am coming from Mizuno MP54s and while the feel is different in the i200s, they are almost as soft as the Mizuno. I really just enjoy the shaping of the ping irons. Always have.

Β

I think a forged offering from Ping, as long as they are priced right, could be a great addition to the lineup. Variety...

As the originator of this thread and having learned some of the details of this future club, I have to step in and inform you that this is NOT the replacement of the i200. Not saying it isn't the i500 though....

Β

It seems that Ping no longer looks to "replace" past years clubs right away.

Β

Instead they appear to be building selections of similar types of clubs (players, GI, blades)

G700, G400, and G all still on their website.

Β

so now you would have i200, i500

and the iblade

Β

Aligns well with selections in driver, G400, G400 Max

Β

Some sort of business strategy to make money I guess.

Β

But G700 isn't considered a G400 replacement, so really it's G400 and G.

Β

IIRC, the prior gen (G in this case) usually sticks around for about year until the inventory levels are down enough to retire it from active marketing.

I'm dying to hear about any replacement or second generation of the iblade. Most likely swapping out my 716 CB's for these. Love the topline of the first gen but feel they'll be an announcement in coming months. Could be wrong but hope I'm not.
