Just clean them up!

What's was your method for cleaning them up?

Bar keepers friend & scotch bright on the soles , toothbrush on the face.

Thanks for the photos!

Does the finish stay this way after cleaning?

Can't wait to try it on my new G700s. I'm finicky about keeping my clubs looking like new.

Yes, it's stainless under the coating. Your 700's are the same.

Yes the finish stays the same afterwards. I clean my clubs after each round and maybe once a month I’ll do the whole BKF and scotch bright thing to further polish them up. That’s only because I’m ocd. They are stainless steel under the initial frosted coating. I only did that originally because I didn’t like how “ worn” they looked after a few range sessions and a couple of rounds.

I believe the frosting is on the chrome, which is on the stainless. The clean up treatment removes the frosting (and face coating) and applies a brushed finish on the chrome. You don't actually touch the underlying stainless.

The main part of all this process is the Bar keepers friend. That’s what removes the frosting coating. After I mixed up some BKF powder with water to make a sludge if you will , then I used a toothbrush on the face with it. Then I switched to the soles and put the BKF sludge on a regular green scotch bright and got to work. Took about 5 minutes or so per club , then a quick rinse with water and some regular dish soap to remove all the residue and a microfiber cloth to dry and buff with.

Did you also scotchbrite the neck and top line? Did you basically strip the whole club or just the soles? And if just the soles does it look weird with neck/topline frosted and soles brushed

I basically took the “polish” on the soles up to the notch on the rear of the hosel. Top line I did but didn’t want them to shiny to prevent any glare from the sun. I like the look better when in the bag because the irons don’t look beat up and marked up on the soles. I’m sure there’s a reason that PING uses the frosted finish , however since it does wear off , I decided that it really wouldn’t make any difference other than cosmetic , if I just polished it up. Keep in mind the clubs are chrome underneath the coating so perhaps it’s just a protective film ?

The Hydropearl finish is to repel water.

A great example of a Ping misstep. The face coating is another one in my opinion.

I much preferred the older finishes from Ping. Up to my S57s. I remember one reason for NOT buying the S56s because they were having difficulties with the 'new' plating separating, or something like that.

Progress.

I agree. I wrote PING customer service to let them know of my dissatisfaction (and referenced the threads on GolfWRX), and asked that the feedback go to the development team. The response I got back said that "...there have been a lot of these issues circling about recently."

PING is a superb company and it wouldn't stop me from buying their products. I'm glad there's some type of solution as the worn looks cheapens their brand.

I like the chrome, just not the hydropearl finish stuff or the face coating. My Mizuno Hot Metal irons are chrome plated and the finish is outstanding; durable while being just mildly reflective. Not bright mirror chrome. The G irons were raw stainless and not as nice as the chrome so hope they don't go back to that.

PS: my Glide irons, which I think have the hydropearl, are very durable overall. Yeah, they mark up some, but it's been tolerable. Once the newness gets rubbed off the overall durability of these Ping's are still excellent.

Go figure - I have Glide wedges (they do have the hydropearl finish) and they look fine as well.

My Ping ie-1 faces looked like that too after using them for a few months....hated it. Over the winter I removed the paint fill and hit them with a couple of different scotchbrites.

I am traveling and my clubs are not with me.

I polished the sole, face, and back of the club, and the clubs came out with a slightly duller version of the pearl finish, but without all of the chatter marks.

Start with a toothbrush and if you use the Scotch-brite at all (I did), gently rub the clubs. Be patient and take your time doing each club.

All of the marks bothered me, so this was worth the effort.
