Ping G400 Irons Finish

I tried this on my i200 but I could not get the finish to budge at all. Used Bar Keepers Friend at the green pads but didn't make a difference at all.

 

Any idea what I could be doing wrong? I make a paste and the rub it on the iron with the pad but the finish is still there.

I may be wrong but I don't see where Ping applies the hydropearl finish to these irons. You may be trying to remove something that is not there.

It's not a coating. It's the SS that they oxidized. Not sure the process they used. You could soak it in chemical or present a certain gas to SS and it will turn oxidized. Oxalix acid removes the oxidation and the scotcbrite pad removes the uneven surface areas and buffs out the scratches.

Sorry for resurrecting an old thread but I'm in the market for some used G700's that were demo's. They do look pretty beat up.

For those of you that re-finished your G400's or G700's - how are they holding up? Is the wear and tear now "normal" - as in what you'd expect from regular use?

I don't really get too fussed with appearance as irons are tools meant to be smashed into the ground but I don't want them to look too beat up.

Also - are there any performance short-falls with the removal of the hydro pearl finish or is that just marketing fluff? I suspect the dissipation of water as claimed is pretty marginal at best.

Thanks in advance - I've demo'd them twice and they seem to check all the right boxes for me - long, high, straight and forgiving, plus they look better IMO than any other GI/SGI irons on the market - lousy finish not-withstanding.

I have been trying the method explained here with green scotch brite and Bar keepers friends and after 2 hour of work still going with no luck. Not even using 400 and 200 sandpapper. I dont understand how some people did it with 5 min and green scotch brite alone .

Has anyone tried to blast the heads with super fine glass beads or buff the heads with a stitched wheel and some polishing compound? Rock tumbler? Yes, I know, overkill, but it would be interesting to see the results.

Nice to know my 700 sand wedge is browning on the sole after 1 week. Wish they would have done the g iron finish . With the old finish any nicks could be buffed out

Sorry for bumping an old thread. Any update on long term G400 surface wear?

I had to return G410 I recently picked up after finding out 9 iron had different sn and lie angle from rest of the set. So picked up used G400 on ebay instead.

Having played about 200 rounds with mine, I can assure you that there’s nothing wrong with the finish. Just clean them once in a while and they’ll look like new.

My G400 irons are losing their finish also. Has anyone brought this issue to Ping? If so, what was their response?

I have Eye 2s in both stainless and becu, i3+, Raptures that have held up very well. I moved to Mizuno and came back to Ping. These clubs don’t have many rounds on them and don’t look as a top line club should look.

This is just normal wear and tear for those clubs. As mentioned throughout this thread the hydropearl finish marks up easily but there is no risk to the long term durability. Your options are to live with it or scrub them down using methods described in this thread. I seriously doubt Ping will do anything.

Wear looks normal for G400's, finish doesn't have the same longevity as older Ping irons.

Actually, the chrome plated Ping's offer more durability than the raw finish clubs. Chrome is quite hard and wear resistant but it will wear off eventually, when it does though you are back to square one where the old style raw Ping's start in the wear process.
