Mamiya Recoil 95 vs. Mamiya 780 ES SmacWrap / Iron Shafts - Thoughts?

Recommended Posts

I'm considering these two graphite iron-shafts for a new set of Cobra Forged Tec Black irons.

My specs are +.5" length / 2° up lie

I'm 6'4" and have a smooth transition swing. - I'm currently a 3.2 cap

I'm 72 years old with a clubhead speed: 90-92 driver / 79-81 7-iron

Could someone possibly comment on how these two shafts compare?

Thank you

I own the 95's and like them a lot. I came over from the Steelfiber 95's and these are much smoother. They do launch high, but no ballooning. I gave the ES a test ride and just didn't get along with them.

Thanks 10of14! - BTW, what shafts did you go with in your short wedges?

I should add that I would be looking at the Recoil F3 (Regular Flex) as my driver swing is 90-93 mph, and w/ 7-iron (150 yd) speed of about 80 mph.

Did you try the heavier (780 ES SW 83g.)?

Specifically, what didn't you like about this shaft?

The biggest and most important difference will be the weight.

760 ES SW F3 - 70g, 780 ES SW F3 - 83 gm (both decending wt),

95's F3- ~95 gm (ascending weight)

What shaft weight have you been playing?

(and as a side note, +1/2" seems a bit short for 6' 4". Do you know your WTF measurement?)

Stuart, I'm currently playing Titleist AP2's with their 65g proprietory (Kuro Kage) shaft in regular flex. - I also have an older set of Clevland Ta7 Tour's w/ GD GAT 95 shafts. - Much prefer the heavier weight!

Could you please explain how the ascending/descending (weight) thing works? - I would think/hope the shafts would become heavier as the loft increases!

My WTF is 35.5" (right) / 36.25" (left) with an 80" wing-span. * Former right-handed professional bowler! :bb2:

Thank You,

Joe

Descending weight is when all irons start by using the same shaft blank. Because of the different lengths, more is cut off from that blank in the shorter irons then in the longer ones - so the cut shaft weight on the shorter irons will be less then the longer irons. How much different depends on the total weight of the raw uncut shaft. For those particular shafts, it might only be about 2 gm per inch. Ascending and const weight shafts use a different blank for each iron so the progression can be controlled by the designer.

The main difference is that the descending weight shafts will play lighter in the shorter irons then their specs might indicate compared to a similar spec'd const/ascending weight shaft.

As far as what weight might be a better fit it's hard to say. Sounds like the 95's but you've only got two data points to use. Ideally you'd want/need to test a wider range of shaft weights to find out what's best. You may even find out that it might be better to go even heavier then the 95's. Finding the best weight is as much about rhythm and tempo as it is strength.

You can get some lead tape and do some testing on your own if you feel inclined to take the time to do that. You can do this with both the 65 gm Titleists and the 95 gm Clevelands. Just take the lead tape and wrap it around the shaft a little below the grip. That will simulate a heavier shaft. You can start by adding the lead tape in 10 gm increments, go hit a few shots. Add more and try again. Ideally it would be nice to use an LM to see how the numbers change but it's not critical. Just judging how it feels and watching the ball flight can be enough to get you a pretty good idea of what weight will work best for you.

I got fit into Recoil 780 Matte Black shafts, doesn’t say SmacWrap or ES, what’s the difference? I was told these matte black that only say UST Recoil 780 F3 on them, any info? Where to get? What are they a Proto to? The price was pretty expensive on the build sheet.

Why not ask the builder so you can confirm what you are receiving??? I've seen some Recoils that were matte black and only difference was cosmetic to match the Cally Steelhead XR Pros they were installed on.

This is from UST, not me :-)

ES stands for "Enhanced stability" - stiffer butt/mid section, stiffer tip, lower torque.

SmacWrap - is supposedly something that increases the vibration dampening and shock absorption to help those with medical/pain issues.

Supposedly these shafts where only made for swingscience, just my luck as they say they have them and they are a Tour spec shaft made for them by UST....... UST says I should be good to go with the normal ES SmacWrap yet Swing Science says this a shaft specifically made for them by UST with different specs than retail market can acquire.

I agree to a point, I’ll see the cost difference and determine, I have someone with a SS account checking into it for me, didn’t know if anyone here had any experience.

No experience with the Smac, but the ES was great in my last set of irons and I have it in my 24* hybrid.
