Best golf Climate: Troon or North Berwick ?

So, there are a ton of great golf courses clustered around the Town of Troon and also around the Town of North Berwick.

 

One town is on the West coast, the other on the East.

 

Which town has the best climate for Year-Round golf??

 

Which town has the longer, more dependable, golf season?

I don't think that there is much of a difference. The only thing I heard, is that there can be more rain on the west coast und more wind on the east coast.

Having played on both sides of Scotland in July I can say that they were equally cold and miserable, Wonderful golf though.

I'll be playing in Ayrshire and East Lothian in June for the first time, I'll try to post something when I get back. I've been to the St Andrews area a couple of times, as well as Dornoch, and have had mostly good weather. No matter, you have to be prepared for pretty much anything. And if wind is a problem, don't go to Scotland or Ireland. It may or may not rain, but its almost certainly going to blow at least a bit.

This is probably the most important thing, getting a few good days is luck. Getting a few good hours can be luck. I can remember a heavy monsoon ending 10 minutes before our tee time at Kingsbarns. I can remember an entire lovely week, except for the one day we played Carnoustie, when it was cold and rainy the whole day. I wouldn't allow weather considerations to influence your choice of locations if you're planning a few months out.

 

And if you're looking for a fun place to play in the neighborhood of Carnoustie, give Panmure a shot, its a blast.

And I found both areas equally warm-ish and dry in April. Which further proves that for the most part, the weather there can be anything, any time, and it’s largely a matter of luck on any given day.

I've played North Berwick on 2 different trips and stayed in Edinburgh both times. Just wondering what it is like to stay in North Berwick for a night or two.....Restaurants...Pubs etc.....

It's wetter in Troon but there's not much difference otherwise.

 

I was brought up in SW Scotland and live in NE Scotland. You can play golf pretty much all year round, brief periods of snow cover apart, no matter where in the country you are.

 

You should note though that winter lasts 9 months and is immediately followed by 3 months of cold weather.

I'm biased but I think West shades it, just more features and challenges to the Ayrshire links than the Edinburgh/Lothians links. More definition, dunes, humps and bumps in the west. East tends to be flatter. (Generalisation, I appreciate!)
