Grips were never discussed...just put on what you like. I don't have any confidence in this fitting at all.

I think the industry has changed.

I've been to one of these and it's just basically a sales pitch to get you into one of there clubs. They can try all kinds of combinations to get you to like the clubs they have. Surprisingly, at the last Titleist fitting I went to, we did a direct comparison of my current irons. After multiple combinations.... he said that he wouldn't change. What I had was fit to me pretty well.

I wouldn't have expected to go to a Titleist demo and come away with some other manufacturer's clubs. But, I did expect to have the features of Titleist clubs explained and utilized. For example, Titleist woods and hybrids have a weight port that can be used to alter the SW and draw/fade bias of the club. This was neither mentioned nor utilized in either the Titleist or Club Champion fittings. They both just plugged X head into Y shaft and called it a day.

To use a demo day as a criticism of club fitting is comparable to using the results of a blood pressure cuff in a drug store as a criticism of the medical profession. In no way, shape, or form is a demo day club fitting. Demo days can be fun as you hit the newest shiny things, but that's about it.

First of all, the guy doing the "fitting" is likely to be a sales rep, rather than a club fitter. Secondly, a demo day follows one of two models; either a 30 minute "appointment", or multiple people hitting clubs with limited or no access to the "fitter" or launch monitor data. Thirdly, there is usually only one brand available for testing. And finally, and perhaps most importantly, there is limited opportunity to get baseline numbers for your own clubs to have an accurate comparison. Throw in range balls of varying quality and you have all the ingredients for a bad experience. But using all of that to criticize the CONCEPT of club fitting just makes zero sense. Likewise with heading into a big box store and taking pot luck with an hourly wage employee who may or may not know the first thing about things like ball flight laws.

The angst on this thread about the current state of clubfitting is also misplaced, IMO; it's never been better! Because of interchangeable shafts, hosel adjustments, and Trackman, you can get data that far exceeds anything we've seen in years past, and you can get results from that data; I'm living proof. BUT you have to do the research to find out who is good and who isn't, and go in with clear expectations of what you hope to accomplish, as well as what is and is not possible, and all of that has to be communicated to the fitter in advance of ever hitting a ball. If you don't do that stuff, there is nobody to blame but yourself for results that don't please you.

Seems to be the way to go for experienced players.

I’ve only had mediocre results from professional fittings, especially irons/ shafts.

Driver fitting has been a bit more helpful..

I know what I like, and what I want to see ball flight wise.

I think Howard Jones among others has pointed out that many fittings are justified solely by

a) use of a Trackman or other launch monitor

b) a hundred different shaft options to try

but do not offer any chance to try a wide range of weights, swingweight, lengths and grips as part of the process. That sort of fitting is more about capitalizing on minor variation in LM numbers and swing vagaries than about actually providing the golfer with a "custom" club. Things like grip, length and total weight are far more personal and crucial than getting just the right shaft bend point or finding a way to shed 300rpm off your driver spin.

I totally agree. What gets me about Club Champion fittings is that those things are there for the doing, and they choose _not_ to do them. If you use compressed air, changing grips takes seconds. Seconds! You can even change shaft length that way. And many of these clubs have some sort of weight port system that allows you to customize the SW, longitudinal MOI, and shot shape. All are measurable in seconds. I asked if they followed up by doing those kinds of adjustments, and they guy said "no". That's a huge oversight. IMHO, if you don't have a club equipment at home, you've got no shot at getting clubs appropriately fit.

And if you can't or won't do simple weight/length/grip adjustments, then you're IMO fraudulent in calling what you're doing "custom club fitting". You are simply using a launch monitor to sell shafts and heads and assembly services.
