Not a hole in one?

But nobody at any magazine has any authority to tell ME what counts and what doesn't. If the Rules of Golf don't cover it, its fair game. Personally, I've had 3. **First was with my soon-to-be father-in law over 35 years ago**, most recent in an interclub match while playing at the other club.

That bolded part sounds like it's connected to a way-better story than some hole-in-one tale.

I don't think its a great story, but it sure was memorable. I always enjoyed my in-laws, got along great, and our mutual interest in golf certainly didn't hurt. Over Memorial Day weekend in 1984, about 3 months before the scheduled wedding, I was playing with Charlie and two of his friends. The 10th at Cumberland CC is a sharply downhill par-3, maybe 150 yards. I hit an 8 that bounced twice and rolled into the cup. All 3 guys said that when I turned around, my eyes were as big as saucers. I remember hitting a decent drive on the next hole, but the rest of the round is a blur. Charlie DID pick up the tab for drinks that day. After that, I went over 30 years before my next ace, while my wife had her first and second. Now we're tied at 3 apiece.

Good job.

As a note, I must admit that I missunderstood your phrase, "with my soon-to-be father in law over 35 years ago." I initially thought that you will soon be getting married, and the father of the woman you are about to marry witnessed your ace over 35 years ago! I thought it was a long-lost highschool love story or something! I now see that it was 35 years ago when you were soon to be married. Anyway, three holes in one count as a good story too!

> P.S. As for the Rules of Golf, if you're not playing by the Rules then by definition the Rules have nothing to say about any particular shot! Reminds me of that story about Bobby Jones's father "The Colonel" acting as an official in one of the earliest Augusta National Invitational Tournaments. A player called him out to the course and asked if he could get a free drop from some situation or another. The Colonel asked, "What's your score?". When the player responded that he was 15 over par (or some such) The Colonel said, "Then do whatever the **** you want to".

I take issue with the notion that if you're playing by yourself it doesn't really count. Both of mine came when I was playing with other people, but my albatross was during a solo round. there isn't a person alive that will ever convince me that the albatross isn't legit just because I was by myself. I holed out my second shot on a par 5, regardless if there were 0 or 5000 spectators. I just don't share the opinion that it isn't legit or doesn't count just because you're by yourself.

What means "count"?

It happened. Nothing wrong with telling people it happened. But holing out when practicing is a different thing that holing out while competing. I'm simply saying if it were me, I'd tell anyone who asked that it happened but I'd also explain that it happened while playing by myself or while practicing or whatever the case may be.

Only time it really "counts" is when it comes to HIO prizes and insurance. Unless there is a registry out there like the bowling congress had/has for 300 games.

Most of your answer are wrong, until YOU get a hole in one in those scenarios and then I think Mr. Ferg will be singing a different tune :D

Maybe that’s where we differ in our perspective. I no longer play competitive golf, so I no longer play practice rounds. Any time I’m on the golf course (aside from random charity scrambles for work) I’m playing a round of golf per the rules of golf. I’m not “practicing”, I’m playing. A hole in one is a hole in one, and there is no asterisk to go on the card with it. There’s no caveat to the story of it. It’s simply a hole in one.

He mentioned all those times that pros stop their swings when someone screams and what if they made contact. He says they would have to play theirs. I told him I check the mail everyday and I don’t get a pga check.

Sounds like you need a new buddy......
