3+ Wedge Users - The more, the merrier or certain wedge for certain shots?

Currently at a 19.2 hcp in my 2nd season, started last year. I’m a hinge and hold guy, I like Phil’s simple approach.

I play the 48* PW from my MP-33 set, and 56/14 and 60/06 Mizzy S5 wedges.

PW for full swings and bump n run shots around the green. Very reliable. Longer bump and runs with 9i or 8i max.

56/14 for full swings and longer bunker shots. Tougher to dial in.

60/06 for short bunker shots, tight lies and when shortsided, on a greenside downslope or in deep rough. Still dialing it in.

Reflecting on my better short game rounds, doing most everything with the PW yields the best results. I prefer having less options and dialing in my PW. Threw the 52* out as I never used it.

I try to always lay up to a minimum distance of ~100 yds. If I end up inside 100, using 7i-PW for pitch shots is easier and more reliable than full wedge swings. Easier to keep online and fun to dial in.

I’m getting way too stressed having to play full wedge shots than pitching with feel and control.

Curious what I’ll be doing in the future, but right now wedge play is a strength in my game, so why change what works. Also, one more slot at the top end of my bag. Carrying Driver, 3W, 5W/2i (depending on shape of my swing and course played), 3H, 4-PW. Feeling very comfortable at the moment.

Mine is similar to this. I’m dropping my 64* as just don’t get to use it enough. Swapping my 58* for a 60* accordingly to enable further those times when I need to flop. It’s an MD5 Jaws 60 W 08. Shame really as the 64* is a proper smile machine, truly magical, but as I only have 14 slots in the bag I’ve had to make the decision to enable a 5-Wood.

I’m also not liking my RTX4 54* either. I had a CBX which I liked, I then had a G410 SW that I liked but decided to change for the RTX4. I’m not finding it easy on direction or distance and have no such problems with any other wedge I own, so it’s going, to be replaced by a CBX2 54* graphite. That, hopefully, will provide the link between my irons and my wedges. I don’t know what it is about the RTX4 that I don’t get on with, all I do know is that it feels hard and unforgiving compared to my set wedges and the MD4s I own.

50* for chipping and tight lie bunker shots.

56* for non-tight lie bunker shots.

60* for pitching and for chips from a downhill lie.

It really comes down to how to much you practice your short game. When I practiced it a lot, I knew the carry-to-roll ratio for each wedge and thus could chip with any of them. Not practicing as much as I need to, I’ve started chipping just with the 50* so that my practice is spent maintaining good skill with one club instead being mediocre with three clubs.

Four wedges: 48, 52, 56, 60°

They all have their set full swing distances and the 56 and 60 is my sand clubs, depending on the shot at hand.

For shipping and short pitches I pick a landing spot and the choose the wedge that gives me the desired roll out from that certain spot.

4 wedges. 46, 50, 54, 58. 46 and 50 are full swing clubs. i almost never full swing the 54 or 58, 3/4 swing max. I mostly chip with the 54 and pitch with the 58. Anything around the greens unless I need to flop is 54. Anything 30 yards or more I’m pitching the 58. Also use the 58 out of bunkers unless it’s a longer bunker shot.

48, 52, 58 for me.

Wedge gapping on full swing distances is foolish. Base it on ranges of yardage, trajectory, and type of shot.

48 covers 110-120. Mostly full swing shots and 3/4 shots so I have medium bounce and standard grind

52 covers 90-110 full swings and standard pitches and chips. Same type of shots as 48, but also square face ships and pitches. So medium bounce and standard grind

58 covers any distance up to 90, as well as more open face shots, bunkers. So, medium bounce and a little heel and tie relief (m grind vokey).

The one thing I can say is that I have become quite proficient at manufacturing shots. I can hit my 9-iron 135 yards but then grip down to the shaft and hit it from 70 yards for a links style bump and run.

> Great info in this thread. This is a difficult subject to tackle for us high handicap golfers. I’ve been leaning towards getting a 52 ,58 and becoming proficient with those. Once I see what I’m lacking, I can add an additional wedge .

That's the right approach. Don't buy wedges based solely on loft gaps or full swing yardages. Buy wedges to fit needs instead. good job!
