If I went from a stronger set with a 32* 7i, what could I expect to lose distance wise with the 480tc and a little softer shaft ? Would it potentially overspin? Current spin on 7i is around 6-6.5k 32* 7i

Well, if a one-club gap is 12 yards and part of that is the 1/2 inch difference between clubs, let’s estimate 10 yards is due to loft. So you’d be looking at a 4-5 yard difference, all things being equal. But …. that likely won’t be accurate.

Depends on your swing. You’d have to hit them and see. Due to CG differences, soles, etc., irons launch differently. You’re looking for optimal shot height, spin and descent angle relative to your ball speed. When you get into these pure forged irons with no tungsten, the stock loft is about the flight window. I have had a few models fly longer than irons with stronger lofts. I’m getting excellent distance with the 480-TC and I went with a mid-launch shaft (C Taper Lite.) They’re not flying too high. You can throw darts with these heads.

Spin will not necessarily be higher.  Could be, but it’s adjustable either way. If too much, strengthen lofts a degree. If now enough, weaken.

But in all cases, I’d assume nothing and play them first.

They are the real deal. I hit some shots yesterday with these that felt so pure it reminded me again what it is about 1020 forged irons that is so nice. Easy to flight up and down too. There’s nothing low in the heads to make them balloon up.

thanks for the detailed reply. I played c taper lites before in stiff and really loved them. Disappointed I didn’t keep that set, thinking of giving these 480s a try.

Their demo program is a nice deal. The CTL 110 stiff is just what I am playing. Super shaft and great in these heads. I also considered Project X IO in 6.0, which is very smooth. I like that shaft a lot too. Gives me very similar performance to the C Taper Lite and is at the same weight.

I will get these 480TCs on a monitor at some point and get detailed numbers. It does not seem like I am losing any distance vs 32 degree 7 irons I have played, only that the shots are higher with the 480. Every iron I have played for any length of time, the 7 iron is in the 32-34 degree range. For me the performance has not varied a great deal in terms of distance and I’ve only made adjustments a few times, to either the loft or lie angle, just to dial it all in.

I liked the irons so much and haven't been getting along with my gap wedge of late that I ordered a NL gap wedge last night. It shipped today. Just phenomenal turnaround times. Excited to get back into forged wedges.

And the part about throwing darts is legit. I had more birdies on par 3s my first round with these than I ever have.

Congrats. I predict you will love it. I have the new SPN gap wedge, the 50 in standard sole. It is firmly in the bag. The wedges are outstanding and they feel just like the irons. Feels sweet, spin is high and they do not dig. It fits perfectly with the 480TC.

Just saw Chez Reavie is now with Cobra? Also not on their website as tour player. Wonder when that split happened?

First noticed this back at the Players...I suspect that it happened quietly even before that.  Has a Cobra logo on the side of his hat.

He is not on the Cobra site either.

Searching for answers. He is really struggling. Iron play is actually one of his bright spots — 66th on Tour in strokes gained/approach shots. By far his best major stat. He is 175th in strokes gained/driving, 128th in putting, 172 in driving distance and 107 in driving accuracy. Short off the tee and not in the fairway puts a lot of pressure on the rest of his game. He’s missed the cut in 6 of 9 events this year.

Anyone have any good comparisons for what modern irons would be similar to both the 480tc and DB?

The 480 TC is very similar in size to my 716 AP2s which are very similar in size to the T150s. The 480 TC has a slightly longer blade length and slightly more narrow top line to my eye. Others on here have said it looks similar to P7MC. To my eye the proportions are just about perfect.

Thank you for that! I didn’t go through every page so I figured other stated what it is similar to. Would the DB compare more to like a zx7/i230 style iron? I figured they were thick irons but after checking their site, they don’t seem that big. Thanks for the response!

To kind of go off of what @toastinato is asking, which New Level iron would be closest to a ZX5? I know the V sole makes the Srixons a bit unique, I'm just looking for more of a comparison with regards to the Player Distance category.

I think you’re probably looking at the upcoming 408-DB. I own the 902-PD which are very close in dimensions to the 408-TC. I also own the Srixon 585, for reference to the ZX5. There’s a noticeable difference between the 902 and the 585 with the 585 being beefier all around.

For the bravest ball-strikers in this thread, the 480-MC review was posted to plugged in today. They seemed to love the irons.

Someone talk me out of getting a GI-22 5i with an AMT White X100 to replace my 4 iron for ONLY $90! I could even get the Utility Iron with a HZRDUS Black 100 6.5 for only $150, are these the same kind of hidden gem like the Takomo 301s?
