MYGOLFSPY Most Wanted 2020 Players Distance Irons

I just saw that Not allowed because of spam published their 2020 most wanted players distance iron results.

Mizuno competely excluded from the testing. Excluding the Mizuno JPX919 Forged makes sense given the 921 just got announced, but the MP20-HMB has no reason for exclusion.

The Taylormade P790 has gone from a top performer to the second worst on their list, with every other website on the interenet suggesting the P790 update was an incremental improvement not a step back.

Last year the Ping i500 was a bottom half performer, now it's one of their "Most Wanted" finishing 4th overall.

I am left scratching my head not making sense of any of the results and hoping people don't buy clubs based on this testing.

 

What level of credibility do you give to the Not allowed because of spam testing process and published results?

**** testing is legit. 790’s are that good at distance control at all.

I wanted to modernize my irons so I had an engraver lined up to grind the numbers off my 4 - 9 irons and re engrave them 5 - PW.

 

But after seeing the lofts on the latest Callaway Mavriks and a few other iron sets I've instructed the engraver to instead make them 6 - PW.

 

Wouldn't want to go to all that trouble only to be stuck with 2019 technology.

You hit it on the Foeged. As far as HMB goes, one of two things. Either Mizuno didn't send it in for testing. Not likely but possible. Or two, which is more likely, it's being tested in a different category. Perhaps simply players category. The OEM often declares what category a club is designed for.

I loathe the feel of a hot faced irons regardless of their loft, but apart from this I don't understand the hate for distance irons.

If good engineering enables distance irons to produce the right launch angle, peak height, decent angle with just enough spin to hold greens then who cares about lofts or what number is on the club.

I personally can't play distance irons as I'd need three gap wedges, but I probably would if I could.

Don't care for MGS testing. They try to pass themselves off as the ultimate testing gurus with the most exacting data. Most of their club/ball tests show minimal differences from first to last, and some of their opinions particularly on golf balls are kind of out there for me. Although, the choice of Wilson D7 forged for best in the category is actually refreshing. I currently game the C300 forged, which are very likely the same irons, and can vouch for the fact that they are long, solid and just all around fantastic performers. Nice to see something other than TM, Cal, or Ping getting the title in this category.

The cheese grater on the bottom of the WIlson D7 Forged is a complete deal breaker.

Worst design since the carbon fibre on top of the Cobra Speedzone irons.

I'd like to amend my original post and add that I'm now including my old PW and getting G engraved in place of the P. Or should I go for U or A? Decisions, decisions. ?

For me the Most Wanted lists are becoming almost as useless as the GD Hot List. Without looking I know that Srixon Z5X5 will be top ranked in its category, Ping will have the top stand bag, etc. When I look at their irons tests I find the data for the top 5 or 10 clubs too close to make a call. Funny that they left out the Mizuno but then included the i500 which is well past its due date.

yeah, it's often the OEM that tells them what category they want it to be included in.

Agree on both points. The Wilson sole helps on low strikes, but not through the turf. I actually hit the V6 better than the C300. The carbon fiber topline Cobra introduced seems pointless. Tech for the sake of tech.

I think the testing on that other site is not really ‘data,’ because the data is largely just a compilation of subjective opinions and results from golfers of all kinds of skill levels. It gives you some idea but the distance and accuracy (especially this one) don’t mean much. Have 20 other golfers do the same test and it wouldn’t turn out the same. What it shows is a lot of these irons are very close in performance.

As far as their distance winners are concerned...look at the loft of the longest tested clubs v the shortest....strongest lofts went the furthest, WEIRD

Hope thats not true, That makes even less sense, they are supposed to be “independent”, otherwise they have just become golf digests gold list.

Not necessarily. If its a tweener iron like say the 919 Forged. There is nothing wrong in asking “What’s your target demographic, game improvement or players”

The GD comp is just ridiculous if you follow the site at all.

I do follow them, i feel they have lost their way lately. Trying to “shock” you too much with their takes. Manufacturers shouldnt have any say, especially if you want to claim independent. Have criteria for what meets certain types, moi, blade size, etc for your categories.

Well just like any online business, clicks means money. Some things they do are great, some things seem like they are just reaching for clicks. Just my opinion.
