Check out sub70 irons... you can get them custom built to your specs for the cost of a decent set of used irons. They are great.

I agree that depending on how you customize them that they can run up the price. They have great reviews and are on the cheaper end for quality irons that you can get brand new and customized, but I can't test/demo them, and I don't know what type of iron or what type of shaft would be best. Plus, I can find used sets of clubs that I can demo at my local shop then buy online with a little more confidence in what I am getting.

I went through the same upgrade late last year coming from ~25 yo tour cavity forged, DGS300. I didn't want to spend $$$ for brand new so I looked at & tried a bunch of used irons, many brands w/ different shafts. I paid for an iron fitting session at 2nd swing, a few performed & felt about the same and I settled on the JPX 900 forged because i really liked the looks. I had a shaft priority list and watched for used sets with my lie angle preference. It took about 2 months but it was winter so I was patient and finally found a set at a decent price. They even had the #1 preferred shafts, PX LZ 6.0's. It was a lot of fun going through the process and I couldn't be happier with the performance. I think I am set for another 25 years!! :)

That is my thinking too. One of them has a good demo program I just don't remember if it is Hogan or Sub70. They will send you a couple irons.

After having the lie adjusted I'm not sure I've hit one ball 5 yards off target (well one but i was in 5 inches of rough and the ball was below my feet). Im a 13 too so I'm not that good lol.

 

The distance is just amazing, I can feel the mishits and they still travel a ways. I'm not saying youll mishit and get the same distance as a good hit but your not gonna hit a shot 50 yards shorter. Yesterday I had a few and they came up maybe 10 yards short of green, if that.

I don’t know Hogan’s program, but sub70 will send you a demo iron for $20.

i got a 639 5 iron with an s400 and midsize grips for $112... not super cheap, but obviously the difference adds up.

 

used is great too, if you find the right deal... I’ve got $200 into my adams cmb set, but I bought e heads here for $50, paid my local pro $100 for old project x shafts and the install and then $50 on the grips... Probably not a repeatable process!

my experience buying golf clubs on a limited budget has always been less than fun... you end up compromising somewhere to save money... I liked sub70 because I felt i was maximizing the things I wanted (clubs built to my specs) without spending a ton.

results may vary.

But would that same setup you put together in another comparable OEM model, shaft forged head etc, run most likely $1200 to $1400?

New Level golf has some of the best forged clubs to be found for the price. If I were coming off the old Titleists I would look at something that will not be too jarring a change. The 902 is getting great reviews in the category you like and the 623-M as well.

New right off the shelf yes but a little shopping around and finding what I want NO. I buy used or demo clubs anyway.

Take a look at maltby clubs. Lots of info on this site. Right now you can have them custom built with a good selection of shafts and grips. Presently, they are running a 20% off sale. Nice thing about them you can pick individual irons you want i.e. don't have to buy a 4 iron if not needed. Their TS1, TS2 and PTM models are getting high praise on this forum. These heads are forged and you'll save some coin to boot.

I did an online fitting through golf works and didn’t realize until I looked back that they were fitting for Maltby clubs. I got recommended into the PTM. For under $500 to get a new set of irons, I am strongly considering giving them a shot.
