PXG 811 X Gen 2 vs Proto

LooperCon

Recommended Posts

I have a Gen2 X, a Gen 2 XF, and a Proto X.  Unfortunately, I have not hit any of them. You know the story.....find one gen2 at a good price. Even though you want the Proto, you buy then Gen2 anyway. See the 2nd Gen2 at a good price, say to yourself "get it and see which you like best"...and buy it. Then the day the Gen2 boxes arrive, you find the exact Proto/shaft you wanted for sale on Facebook Marketplace.

Some day I will be able to answer your question though.

What do you guys think will happen with the PXG driver pricing in the near future?

The 0811 XF Gen2 is the model I think I would fit into.  At $265 retail, the out the door price is $313.44.  I'd expect for someone who doesn't quality for Heroes Pricing that this is probably rock bottom for the Gen2 products.  Thoughts?

I've been interested in driver's on their PXG Express site, but they get bought up almost immediately.

I have the gen 2 XF and Proto +.  I also had the regular Proto.  XF vs Proto + are very similar in sound/feel but I think the Proto + is slightly longer and a little lower flight.  The regular proto is a different beast though.  It's very low flight/spinning from my experience.  When I put the perfect swing on it I hit some of the longest drives of my life.  Unfortunately, it was just too low flying/spinning for me the majority of the time.

Had Gen 1 XF, Gen 2 0811x, and now the proto 9*

proto is lower spinning, higher launching, and the weights produce more movement in ball flight than previous weights.

proto driver is as hot as anything on market. Absolutely in the top ranks on speed. Unbelievable deal at $365 right now. I bought it when it was $500 and have no regrets. Sounds good. Feels good. Flies good.

you should see ~ 3mph ball speed and a few hundred rpm less spin. For me that worked out to about 11 yards on the fly over the Gen 2 driver.

I have hit legendary bombs with the proto ventus blue combo.

I have had 2 different Gen2 0811x drivers with both at 10.5. Inwas just fit into the Proto+ because of my negative to level AOA and needed the launch. I had my driver with me during my fitting and saw about 12 yard increase, 300ish lower RPM, and way more forgiving. Total win win situation.

Seeing better drives on the course and more fun to play. That’s for sure. Best priced driver out there with the best performance. Keep in mind I had the Sim, Sim Max, and Sim Max D. Proto is not going anywhere.

HEY! Mind your own business. 😂 ColeJ's right, that was me. But I only bought two on ebay. I would have bought a 3rd, but they had a Ebay/Paypal snafu that prevented me. But I found the same one on Facebook marketplace. The facebook guy was my hero. Full PXG clubs, including a slick PXG bag with his name and his band's logo on it....all supplied by this brother. I called my Mom and yelled at her for not having another boy.

I'll eventually narrow it down to just one. Unless I buy more.

Dave, I should get some range time in tomorrow. And/or a trip to PGA Superstore to check them out on the launch monitors.

Just kidding, if they're unhit and you're off to other things it is probably better to flip them.  If you do hit them and I'm sure many people will appreciate the input.

Personally, I think I fit better into the 0811 XF 9* head.  I'm using a M3 440 9* driver now and actually having a good experience with it, but I think I'd benefit from a higher MOI and a little bit of left help as I play off a high handicap (20.1) and use a lot of the face.

The regular X driver would probably put me in a very similar place to the M3.

I'm not that far from PXG Chicago so I should probably should set up a fitting and try them out.

I had the Gen2 0811x (10.5) and switched to the Proto (9) head turned to (10.5)....the Proto is more stable (forgiving), less draw biased then the Gen2, higher launching, same feel and slightly longer. I really enjoy the Proto, and yes the weights are a lot better then the Gen2. I went with the stock riptide shaft, but really wanna try a Ventus Blue or Red in it.

OK, just got back from a long range session followed by a trip to the launch monitor. Did a whole lot of head/shaft swapping:

Heads: X Gen 2 10.5*, XF Gen 2 9*, Proto 9*

Shafts (all stiff): Diamana S+ 60 Limited Dialead, Kuro Kage Black 55 TiNi, Fuji Ventus 6S

Here's my general recommendation: First choice would be to go to a PXG fitter - there is enough differences in the head performance that the only way to know is to try them.  Second choice if a fitting is not in the plans.....get the Proto.  The Proto with the big weights can be self-fit to get pretty close to optimization for most.

My observations:

0811X Gen 2 - Man, what a low launch/spin head. I'm pretty high spin, as I play the high power fade all day. Swing speed 100-101. But even with the 10.5 head and weight set at nominal, I hit a lot of low knuckle-fades. This is definitely a head for the all powerful. Great feel and sound, but it would not work for me with any shaft.

0811XF Gen 2 - Surprisingly, the XF was a home run for me. It really knocked down the power fade, almost every shot had no curve. And contrary to many reviews I saw, the ball speed was just as good as the X or Proto.

0811X Proto - Very solid and versatile head. With weights nominal, I had a good power fade with a level ball flight. With the weights in a hook bias, the fade was down a bit, but not as straight as the XF.

Oh yeah, one thing I forgot to type in originally - the Proto was amazingly forgiving on toe hits. That was a noticeable difference from the Gen 2s.

On the launch monitors, the ball speed off the Proto was 1-2 mph higher than the others. The 0811Xg2 and XFg2 had identical ball speeds.

Overall, the sound and feel was top notch and almost identical for all 3. The Proto might have been a bit louder, but not enough to really notice.

As far as the shafts go, all 3 were really nice. The Ventus peaked at 1-2 yards longer than the others on the launch monitor, and it really seemed to be a notch above the other 2 in all areas. But honestly, any of the 3 would work fine for me.

The Proto X+ is way more forgiving than the Gen2 0811x. Never played the XF. I am loving the Proto X+ so far.

The XF is much more forgiving that the X for sure. But man, I hit one X on the screws on the launch monitor, and it was 4 mph faster ball speed than the XF. But that only happened in 1 of 12 shots, the other 11 were no faster than the XF. But if you could dial in the X, it would be a beast. I bet with some time, and some shaft testing, you could find magic with the X. But since I play once or twice a month, I'd better stick with forgiveness.

I bought the 0811 XF in 9* head with the Diamana S+ 60g Dialead shaft.  I hit it on my Mevo today 20 shots, the best 4x strikes were 132 mph ball speed with average 129.8 and 2x bad ones in the 126-127 range.  I'll take it.  My M3 440, which really improved my tee ball game this year over the ST190 9.5* with R flex Atmos Red used previously, has similar ball speed on good strikes but the bad ones lose more speed.

The Dialead shaft is black with white text and and looks nice.  It is the 2nd gen Limited:  https://www.mca-golf.com/products/splus-limited-2nd-gen

I had kinda been dead set on TSi3 or SIM but this Proto still has me interested.  Currently playing Gen1 0311 but just ordered some 921F to replace but love my Gen 1 hybrids.   The look at address of the proto is sexy to say the least.  There is a fitter in Atl.  Maybe I need to get down there to check this out.  Think a fitting is $50.

how is the sound? Currently playing epic flash sub zero and I’m not crazy about the sound. I love the sound of the SIM.  More muted sound.  What’s this like? I watched a fitting just not on YouTube and I just love the options the weights provide.
