Don't have an answer, but I do believe that last two years it was announced mid-November.

Of interested #2 will be playing off mats in places Dec-Feb in prep for the US Open.

I wouldn't think it will be off mats this winter. The US Open is in June and the bermuda is super quick to heal.

Agreed. I played in March before the 2005 Open in June and we certainly didn’t hit off mats. 
 

Pinehurst published a course codification message about a month ago on all the things that will affect the courses.  Here it is. No mention of mats on no2

I'm telling you what was sent out in the member newsletter recently.  It also gave information on rule implementation of model local rule E-12.  If you plan to book and this would bother you I highly encourage you to ask.

 

In preparations for the 124th US Open, Pinehurst No. 2 will have several fairway zones that require a fairway hitting mat between the dates of December 4, 2023 thru February 29, 2024. Mats will be provided at each zone location and will also be required on all par 3 tees to help preserve course conditions during these winter months.

That’s crazy. I played No. 2 the week before the U.S. Open in 2014, and there were no restrictions.

I've played courses that have done this as well before tournaments. Usually it is at low points that are weak areas for drainage. not the whole course. They had them roped off and if you hit in there you were supposed to use a mat. Our caddies just told us to go roll the ball out of them and hit nearby instead.

I might have an unexpected 4-5 days off next weekend. I know it’s Presidents weekend so likely busy, but trying to figure out how I might get set up as a single in Pinehurst, which I’ve never been to. I know there are so many courses, I could probably make a nice trip without even playing 2. Any thoughts would he helpful before I go down this rabbit hole.

Log on to the pinehurst website and look at lodging. If there’s some available get on the phone with an agent then inquire about booking and ask about tee time availability. To play 2, 4, or 8, you need to stay on site. Aside from #3 the others don’t really warrant a play. The cradle is fun but if you’re not a resort guest you can only book 24 hours in advance and that can make it tough. 
 

If you’re not talking pinehurst resort but just the pinehurst area I would start checking on tee time availability online.
