As a short distance senior, should which end of the bag should I fill up?  More wedges for scoring or more long clubs so I get closer to my target to start with?

Looking at the clubs in your signature, the first thing that I noticed is that you're carrying a 3-wood (14.5°). That's the type of club that most seniors don't hit much, if any, farther than a 5-wood.

One option would be replacing it with a higher-launching 7-wood (20.5° - 42 in.) to fill the gap between your 5-wood (17.5° - 42.5 in.) and 4H (22° - 39.75 in.)

Another option would be to replace the 3-wood with a 60° lob wedge at the bottom end of the bag; that might help more with your scoring, provided that you become adept with it.

If you're anything like me you won't need a whole lot of options on the long end.  I find less is better because it simplifies choice and likely results in keeping those which you can actually hit reasonably consistently.  Once I'm more than 150 yards from the green all I want to do is advance the ball.  More options around the green is probably better, but you need to put the time to get competent with more wedges.

This exactly.  For me once I’m beyond my 7 wood distance of 170 yards, there isn’t much more i get out of a 4 or 5 wood or 3 hybrid.

Ive actually begun playing with using two 56 degree wedges, one high bounce snd one low for different conditions.

I'm going to start carrying my low bounce 60° wedge again.  I haven't played such a club with any regularity since probably 2013 or there abouts.  I followed the generally recommended notion that a high handicapper shouldn't be using a high lofted wedge.  Well to heck with that because in the last year I've been faced with so many short sided shots into sloping greens that anything less than a 60° is like guaranteeing a two putt at least!  I guess I'm just not good enough to execute an open faced chip to get it close, especially off of a tight lie, so I need a better option that can be struck relatively square.

I’ve heard the same thoughts about higher caps and a 60 degree, i feel it’s all in being confident with the stroke with it.  You can’t baby it or decel with it.   But other than that i don’t see any issue.   I can hit a nice shot with an open face 58, but thats adding bounce to an already high bounce club—12 degrees in my case.   So it has to be a softer turf, which my course being bermuda  is in the summer.

I don't feel I get any benefit from filling up either end of the bag.  Being a shorter hitter, in any given round I don't get a lot of approaches inside 100.  So I play a 47 PW, a 52, and a 58. I don't know what I'd do with another wedge.

I usually fill the 14th slot with some alternative longer club.  Maybe a 3 wood if there a few short, tight holes.  Or an extra iron that would duplicate a hybrid distance, so I have a choice depending on tee-ing up or not, hitting low or high, etc.

If you are a poor chipper or sand player, you can add a specialty club for one of those.

Just picked up a G410 5 hybrid sr shaft. this club is amazing to say the least. The only problem is the high flight into the wind. Other than that a really great club. I also put the Heavenwood back in the bag, and now wonder why it was pulled, as I was killing it today. In 3 weeks I will get the PXG XF irons and hopefully bag is set for awhile. UPDATE: PXG is shipping my irons, and will get them Thursday, way sooner than expected!! So this sat I will have to break in the Cobra SZ 4 hybrid, and the irons. Next year will be great!! C'mon warm weather.

platgof - Thanks for taking up this topic again as I am in the process of revamping my own bag for 2021. I assume that your title is referring to those of us who's driver distance is around 200-210 yards, rather than asking what club we hit from that distance, correct?  I ended the 2020 season (November 14 in RI) with an index of 26.8 (anticap is 30.3 so I'm pretty consistent) down from around 32 when I took the game up again (after a 10-year layoff) in 2019 and hit my driver around 190-200.

In September, I went through an irons/wedges fitting and was fit for Ping G710 (7-UW) with Recoil F3 Smacwrap shafts and a Glide 3.0 56* Eye-2 grind wedge (I have played the original Ping Eye-2 SW off and on for years). Unfortunately, I'm still waiting for delivery, so probably won't play with them until next year.

New to the bag for the end of this season, however, are a Ping G400 10.5* driver (set at 11.5*), Cally Epic Flash Heavenwood (21*) and 9-wood (23*), and a Cleveland CBX2 60* wedge (also with a Recoil F3 shaft). I am "auditioning" hybrids and putters to fill out the bag. My goal is to build a set which will minimize my weaknesses.

I picked up my G710s last Friday, so my 2021 bag is set:

Driver: Ping G400 10.5 (set at 11.5*)

Shaft: Alta CB 55 R

Heavenwood: Callaway Epic Flash (21*)
Shaft: Project X Even Flow Green 55 5.5R

9-wood: Callaway Epic Flash (23*)
Shaft: Project X Even Flow Green 65 5.5R

5-Hybrid: Titleist 816H1 (24*)

Shaft: Tensei Red CK Series 60HY R

6-Hybrid: Ping Anser (27*)

Shaft: stock (switch to Recoil F3 80 gm)

Irons: Ping G710 (7-UW)
Shafts: Recoil F3 80 gm

Wedges:

Ping Glide 3.0 Eye-2 grind (56-10);

Shaft: Recoil F3 80 gm

Callaway Mack Daddy CB (60-12)
Shaft: KBS Hi Rev G

Putter: Bettinardi BB56; Super Stroke Pistol 2.0 grip with 50 gm counterweight

Tried a Ventus Blue senior shaft in my G Max driver, and did not get along with it,  as I just could not load it. It was very accurate, but my swing speed is to slow to get it to go. I put the stock Alta (actually a TFC 419) sr flex back in, and kabaam baby. The TFC 419 stays for now, really like it.

I decided to shake up my bag and just ordered the Ping G425 Max 7 wood, and will remove the 5 and 7 woods in there now. I also dropped the lob wedge as I have a hard time hitting one, but my Cally wedge is no problem, so why struggle! I am also putting a Heavenwood in the bag as it is easy to hit. I am going after consistency to improve the game.

Well, clearly azgreg knows how things go on golfwrx forum.  Last week I went to a simulator and based on said results, will be making some further changes. Details to follow when I'm really done and can save myself further embarrassment   😅.

Platgof - I really like my Heavenwood a lot and I think you will like yours as well. It is 1/4" shorter than the Epic Flash 3-wood with the loft of a 7-wood, so I get 5-wood distance with 7-wood trajectory!

One of the changes which I alluded to in my post above is that I am considering dropping the 60* wedge because of its limited usefulness to me at present. I'm thinking that my 56* Glide 3.0 eye-2 should be able to cover shots around the green.

I’m 2 pages in... Great thread so far.

I took a flyer today on 3 Epic Flash Star hybrids, regular flex with 50g UST Attas shafts.

Hoping for high launch, and distance that matches the strong lofts (17, 20, 23)

Anyone have any experience with these?

CPO has them for $135 in like new, btw...

Wow, this thread makes me feel old... oh, wait, I am.  I'm 73 and started playing golf at 67.  I coached soccer for 30 years and retired from that at 60.  Coaching kept me in good physical condition and my granddaughter got me into golf when she started playing on her high school team.  Thought it was a good way for us to do something together.  She was right.

I've struggled with swing speed and decided that I'll never have a swing speed like those that have played for decades, so I really focus on short game and putting.  Seldom do I average more than 2 putts per hole on a round of golf.  For me, picking the right wedge and putter is more important than what driver I pick.  I've tried enough drivers to conclude that gaining a few extra yards here or there, really doesn't matter.  I do fine with hitting fairways no matter which driver I've gone with.

Since my golfing companions are younger than me and play the men's standard tees, that's what I will usually play.  If it is an exceptionally long course (for me, that's over 6500), I'll play the senior tees.

Since I'm still working (full time), I've got the money to spend on new equipment, so I'm constantly changing my bag.  Currently, here is the setup for 2021.

Driver - Big Bertha B21 (will replace my Mavrik 10.5 F2 shaft), 44.5 inches, and F2 shaft (50g)

Hybrids - Mavrik Max 3h and 4h with F2 shaft

Irons - Apex 21 combo - 4,5,6 DCB and 7,8,9,PW standard

Wedges - MD5 48* and 54*

Putter - Stroke Lab One (waiting for a new White Hot OG #1)

Occasionally, I'll put in a 5w (Mavrik) in the bag if there are some long par 5's but otherwise I like the hybrids much better.

Worked a lot this winter on improving my contact and dispersion.  Got a setup at home for that.  I'm excited about the start of the 2021 season because I really want to see if my winter conditioning (gym 4 times or more a week) and indoor practices are going to pay off.

Currently, handicap is about a 12 but I'm hoping to knock off 1 or 2 this season.

Really enjoy this thread because the "senior" portion of the posts seems to get smothered by all the young guys stuff.
