PayPal Sucks

SPIF

But again too many zeros isn’t always the drive for a refund.  There are instances with “special” buyers where a refund and return of item or refund was worked out, stuff like that is concerning.  Granted “usually” everything is fine but stuff happens.

apparently this has been a thing since 2019 where PayPal introduced this and then rolled it back after backlash but later said screw the complaints it’s for good now.

many merchants have a thread in the PayPal community site about it.  I’m glad I’ve been awakened as a buyer now, no longer choosing the PayPal option for payment anymore as not to potentially screw a merchant over a simple return/refund.

essentially PayPal are thieves, I don’t know how they can justify this as being allowed, a refund of payment doesn’t cost them anything and the volume of transactions that don’t result in a refund lines their pockets well, so by default refunds shouldn’t be touched.  They aren’t losing money here!

The only thing I can think of in defense of PayPal is that this prevents shady practices on some transactions.  For example, 2 parties could agree to a Goods/Services transaction, then if everything turns out ok, agree to a 'refund', followed by a Friends/Family transaction.  There may be other instances where the fees were being circumvented.  Still, it seems like a very bad business decision.

So, a Seller should state that "any" refund will be for the total less the PayPal fee charged to the seller?

Make this a known upfront for any buyer.

When did this go into effect?  I did a PayPal refund February 19th and the fees were reversed for me as the seller.

That approach won't work on ebay though.  Buyer would have to be made whole.  Unless the buyer was not savvy or otherwise was unmotivated and just accepted the partial refund and moved on.

Happened to me. Sold some wedges and the guy immediately messaged me and asked to cancel. I didn't want to deal with an upset buyer, so I refunded. I lost like $14 in the transaction. I made the buyer aware of the fee and thankfully he was stand up enough to cover it. But it's a serious drawback to Paypal, when there were already so many.

There really needs to be an alternative.

This is terrible, last year I sold a few things on eBay a set of irons/driver and a bag.  After the sale I used fedex shipping as it was the cheapest, and oh boy do i ever regret it.

After printing the labels I dropped everything, a month from then I receive a bill from ebay for $385.  I was shocked to find out that fedex charged them 10x the amount i was quoted for.  I looked in detail they said my driver weight was 14 pounds, irons were 25 and a bag was 49.  I called everyone emailed ceo of fedex (if anyone who should know how much golf clubs weigh is fedex, at lest you'd think) and nothing.  Nobody helped I ended up having to pay that or it would go to collections.  I was furious.

Sounds like you got hit with 'dimensional' weights for oversized boxes

Wow that’s BS!  I had a similar situation,  albeit much smaller scale, happen with ups.  Shipped a 3w with them and about 2 weeks later got a bill for $15 more than when I shipped.  They said they audited the shipment and my weight was 2lbs off.  No way it was but whatever.

Ya that's what happened, but whatever they said it was in dimensions and weight was completely wrong.  Best part the bag was returned to me and then resold in the SAME packaging and both times they quoted me different weights and dimensions in the post quote.

What does this mean?  You're supposed to enter the dimensions and weight yourself.

I did, you get a quote from ebay from different companies, USPS, Fedex.  Fedex was cheaper, but fedex is pay later they don't charge you right then and there.  I dropped it off, and off it went.  Buyer didn't realize rainhood was missing so he returned the bag.  I put it back on ebay it was sold within a day upon getting the bag back I instandly dropped it off at fedex again.  At the end of the month you get ebay invoice with the fees you owe for selling and shipping if you did not use USPS.  I got charged 80 more to ship the bag the first time and then 50more the second time.  I looked at the details of the invoice.  They said the bag weight 38 pounds or something ludicrous the first time and 28 pounds the second time.  Which is absolutely lunacy, carry bags don't weigh that much.

If you google fedex ebay issues, you will see I am not the only one getting ripped off for that.  I opened up numerous tickets but ebay and fedex just point fingers at each other.  I don't have social media to try to post it there, so I emailed president of fedex saying out of all people they should know how much golf clubs/bag weigh.

Of course I wasn't expecting a reply or anything.  I basically paid to give the bag away.

It's not that they 'weigh' that much, it's the dimensional weight that is 28 lbs, etc.  However, I agree it should be consistent.  I've sold a lot of bags and clubs on ebay with fedex shipping and have entered the exact dimensions and weight when printing the fedex label, never had a surprise charge later.  I think it's critical to enter the exact specs or I can see how you'll be surprised later as fedex does essentially audit every package.

If you know what you're doing you can sell bags without a problem.  Shipping can be anywhere from $15 to $40 so need to factor that into your listing.  Makes the most sense to try craigslist/marketplace first for a local sale.  Of course if bag is well used it makes the most sense to donate.

Total weight of the box was under 15 pounds.  Dimensions were accurate to within an inch.  To get 38 or whatever they got the first time and 28 later is legalized crime.  They should not be allowed to get away with it, but they do.

If you still know the dimensions of the box, multiply the length x width x height, then divide by 139.  A 'typical' golf bag box is 38 x 12 x 13, that would yield a dimensional weight of 42 lbs.  The smallest golf bag box I've used is 37 x 12 x 11, that would yield 35 lbs.  Sounds like the 38 lbs you were charged was about right, and the 28 lbs was too low.

Good point!  I've never had anything that popular that I had multiple people paying or for that matter I never posted my paypal address in the ad.  But for those that do, I bet they change their thinking with that.
