2021 Maltby MPF Updates

Ping VCOG is staying very high.  G425 mass properties do not appear improved over G410 in any way.

Thanks for the share, suprised at the Cobra MIM TOURS? I still do not know how to read this except for totals? If your miss is "thin" do I look at the VCOG? If so, is the higher number the better? Thanks...

Think of it this way.  The COG is the sweet-spot location.  In the MPF data you can locate the sweet-spot horizontally by looking at the category they call "C-dimension".  This is the horizontal COG, measured out from the center of the hosel.  

 

The height of the sweet-spot is found in the category called "Actual Vertical COG".  Make sure not to use the category called "Basic vertical COG", because that is only part of the calculation used to locate the height of the sweet-spot.

 

Actual Vertical COG is calculated by combining the basic vertical COG and the rearward COG.  It's a trigonometry formula.

 

If your miss is thin and/or you are a "sweeper/picker", you would benefit from a lower Actual Vertical COG (sweet-spot).  The center of a golf ball is .840", so you definitely want to look for an AVCOG that is lower than that,....because pure solid contact requires getting the COG of the head design under the center of the ball

Thank you I can even understand that...   I just got the Cobra MIM's they are .77, so that cannot hurt...

Looks like a good choice for AVCOG, C-dimension, and MOI

I know there are mixed feelings on these ratings, but wow that is a huge number for the MIMs in a players looking iron.

I also noticed that all of their larger iron designs have a low COG (sweet-spot).  Much lower than Ping for example.

 

This is a key detail that makes an iron easier to hit, for a lot of players

Yeah but we were told in the other thread that modern ways of making iron heads negates basic physics🙄

Whether or not one agrees with how the different measurements are combined to come up with an MPF rating, the actual physical measurements do not lie and are very useful for comparing the attributes of various clubheads.

 

It's also a good fact checker for OEM hype such as "this iron has the lowest center of gravity of any we've ever produced."  Often times such statements simply aren't true.

Just FYI for folks who don't look at the numbers Maltby compiles, here are the most important parameters and how to interpret their importance (my opinion).  Remember, the radius of a golf ball (as mentioned above) is 0.84" which is pertinent for CG values.

 

Actual Vertical Center of Gravity (AVCOG) - the location vertically above the sole of the CG (inches)

 

"C" dimension - the location horizontally from the center of the hosel of the CG (inches)

 

Moment of Inertia (MOI) - Moment of inertia which is resistance to twisting of the clubhead on off CG strikes (most important in the horizontal axis - bigger number is better).  MOI should be interpreted as forgiveness more or less.

 

I use these values plus bounce (not measured here) to determine how easy or hard a club is to hit (for me mostly).
