Trying to hone in on a new driver shaft…

Recommended Posts

Hey all! Was wondering if you guys can point me in the right direction. Went for a fitting for a TSi3 and hit a bunch of different stock shafts and landed on the Tensei AV Raw White 65g S.

Not that there’s anything wrong with that, but I feel as if I’m leaving some desired characteristics (flight/spin) by not exploring some premium shafts. Was wondering if someone could help with suggesting what might be in my wheelhouse. Thanks!

Club Speed: 110-112

Ball Speed: 149-152

Tempo: Too Violent at times LOL

Normal Shot Shape: A baby fade (right to left for me as a lefty)

Spin with Tensei: ~2400-2600

Normal miss: Push left.

Add your launch angle and I’m sure you may get some more insight. 2500rpms could be way low for a 6* launch angle , but high for an 18* launch angle

You may have contact issues if your swing speed is that high and ball speed is that low. How was ball speed and club head swing speed measured? I’m around 113mph swing speed and 165mph ball speed average.

Howard’s driver tune up is a must IMHO

Very unlikely.    Getting the other specs (length, shaft weight, and swing weigh) to be a good fit by following Howard's tutorial in @Drivingrangehero post above is going to have WAY more a potential benefit than what particular model shaft you might try - and those are the things that tend to be ignored in most "fittings".   For most am's fine tuning the shaft stiffness profile (which is what you're  doing looking at more shaft options) is not all that important.   And even for those that might be exceptions, it's only going to help if you get the club specs addressed in the tutorial to be a good fit first.  No shaft is going to make up for those club specs being off.

You’re losing a huge smash factor. I swing at 99-100 mph and I get the same ball speed as you. Did the fitter look at your smash factor and fit you correctly to help get your ball speed up. You should be up to at least 160 ball speed

Spin for your ss is fine.  Ball speed is not where it needs to be.  What's your launch?

He did not. Never brought up smash factor

Contact is really low for me. Low launch angle

GCQ

Did you use the dots on the club.

The GC Quad has a predetermined number put in for smash factor in a driver of 1.45. In order to get swing speed they take the ball speed and divide by the predetermined 1.45 smash which would give you around 103mph swing speed.

If you divide the ball speed of 152 by the predetermined smash factor for a long iron of 1.36 you will get a swing speed of 111.7mph and 109.55mph if you use 149 ball speed.

Either the machine was set to 1.36 smash  which is the predetermined smash for a long iron, or you are missing the driver beyond what is considered a bad strike.

I tried to hit a few balls on a GC Quad at Dicks a few days ago to see if I could take full swings with a club 5 iron Titleist T200 25* (I can’t, torn rotator cuff causes too much pain) 2 of my strikes were bad, 1 very poor, the other poor, the third was flushed, but lacked oomph due to my shoulder, but all three spit out the same smash factor, with different swing speeds. My swing speed didn’t change that much, but my ball speed did, which caused the GC QUAD to show varying swing speeds. You can see in the pic below.

The driver pic (a year old maybe, I’m not doing that with a bum shoulder) shows my swing speed at 113.2mph at the Predetermined smash of 1.45. I dispute that. I know when I hit one flush at 113mph I’m usually around 168mph. So, my swing speed on the Driver was in all reality closer to 111mph that day. If you are at 110-112mph swing speed, you should see around 164mph ball speeds

Your numbers just seem off, so I’m trying to explain away why. Either way Howard’s DIY driver tune up is the best thread on this site, hands down

it got me from years of inconsistency off the Tee, to being an excellent driver of the ball. Through his expertise, I shortened my driver playing length, lightened the shaft, added weight to the head, lofted down and I now find the sweet spot (a shade high, shade toe) on my Ping G410 lst consistently in order to optimize what I have. Definitely worth the look!

It’s too low. We got it up to 10.2 at one point but still low. I wonder why my ball speed isn’t correlating.

Likely because impact is low on the face (assuming the club numbers are accurate).   For launch, spin, and ball speed with the driver and woods, the face impact location is the MOST important factor to evaluate and consider.   You really shouldn't even be messing with loft or head selection or much else until the face impact location is checked and addressed (again, see Howard's tutorial for details on how to detect and deal with that type of problem).

Low. Like 9.6-9.7

At your ss, you want to see it a little higher.  12 to 15 degrees would be optimal.

Contact as in where on the face you're hitting it ? Have you sed impact tape ? :classic_blink:

If so, your issue seems pretty clear.

You're hitting it below the sweet spot. Low on the face equals higher spin and less ball speed.

Tee the ball higher. :classic_biggrin: No, seriously. :classic_cool:

Same swing hitting the sweet spot will get more loft, more ball speed and less spin. So 112 SS will get close to an optimal 160-165 BS, get launch angle up a bit to maybe 12 or so and reduce spin rate a few hundred.

Win-win-win. 👍
