Help! Using bounce properly

New wedge: 58 degree Miura wedge, 12 degrees of bounce.  (Current 60 has 11 degrees+ heel relief and a thinner sole.

 

So I'm (purposefully) moving to a club with more bounce, force me to use bounce properly (for the first time).

 

Any advice?  I'm a pretty decent player, 6 handicap.

Sounds like you already play with a wedge with bounce so should not really be that difficult. If you are going from zero bounce or low bounce, it will take a little bit of getting use to.

IMO off tight lies just try to keep the shaft relatively close to vertical, stay somewhat shallow around impact, and think of the sole like a skid plate.  And of course keep speed up.

Practice with your right hand (assuming you are right handed) on the club only and hit pitches and chips.  You will be forced to release the club to use the bounce.  After a healthy amount of practice chips, add your left hand back on but retain the same right hands feels and release.

It may not be as you need the leading edge to get low enough, but for me hitting off tight lies helps hone in the skidding or non-digging feel.  I'll clip some chips off the practice green (close to the fringe, shh! 🤐) and even off a hard floor sometimes to try to keep that skid low without bouncing up into a skulled ball.

Set the butt of the club center of stance and return to same position at impact.  A simple wrist c0ck and release back to impact will optimize use of bounce.  Assuming you're a righty, use your right hand only and don't let the leading edge dig.  Feel for me is like you're throwing the right hand at impact (extension, palm down to flexion, palm up).

They key is not having your right hand turn over at release, you want to feel like your right hand it following the club head and yes practice with one hand forces this.

One approach to hitting wedge shots is called engage the bounce. Here is an excerpt from an April thread post I made on the topic:

Bouncers have mid-high to very high bounce wedges, and skim the club along the ground to make contact with the ball. Bouncers do not engage the leading edge and take long beaver pelt divots.

The idea is that bouncers get a margin of error. If the shot is hit a little fat, is will have less backspin a roll out more toward pin. If the shot is picked clean, it will carry farther in the air and bite more (less rollout). The big-divot crowd tends to have a good shot or a bad shot.
