Three things that I’ll admit influence me: 

 

1) Looks. I hate the golf industry’s use of goofy, ever-changing names, loud designs, etc. Simple, clean and classic are what I look for. I currently play P7MC irons and think they’re a perfect example of what I mean. MP-20s would be another example. I give TaylorMade and Mizuno a lot of credit for their recent products like the P770s and MP-20 HMBs that allow people looking for forgiveness to get that clean, classic design, too.

 

2) YouTube videos. You have to know what certain reviewers are good at and what to take with a grain of salt. But if you understand the main golf channels, their strengths and weaknesses and tendencies, you can get some good info. If, for example, the TXG guys review a product and says it helps with a specific problem that I happen to have, then I know it might be worthwhile to test that product whenever I get a chance. I also appreciate the channels that don’t buy too much into the manufacturers’ marketing mumbo jumbo. 
 

3) Nostalgia/connections. I love Mizuno irons because I loved my Mizuno baseball glove growing up. I like the Big Bertha brand because it was the new hotness when I was a junior and only had cheap/hand-me-down stuff. I’m happy to use a Bettinardi putter because it’s a Chicago-area company and I live nearby. Weird connections, maybe, but they exist.
