The biggest problem with winning a Gold Medal for golf in the Olympics is that it has the shares the same value as the guy who won gold for the kata. That’s like if they were to give a gold medal for hitting range balls or mirror work. Total joke.

To win gold in Decathlon, you have to be good at 10 different sports. For golf, you don’t have to be good at any. So unfair.

The question in the OP is about an "average" tour player - meaning, someone who's good enough to make a living on the tour, probably has some endorsements, and is pretty well set up for financial success in their chosen career (that is, tour golf).  So, the purse amount is moot.  With regards to fame and notoriety, there's something to be said about the "allure" of a player who makes a career out of top-10 finishes, but never wins a tournament.  Imagine the forum, media, and magazine fodder for a player like that!  Especially if said player pulled out the round of their life and won Olympic gold!
