Fairly new to golf and does a lot of great things in her swing, but still struggled with missing the ball and topping the ball...

 

What thoughts were percolating in her mind?

My guess is she is thinking "throw the club at the target".

Guessing her initial intent was to either scoop to get the ball in the air or avoid taking a divot and ruining the grass.

So with many starting out they tend to have the general image of the club hitting up into the ball, however this was not the “thought” that was holding her back…

 

 She actually generates decent speed and hit a few 7 irons about 120ish…

Thinking "pick it off the grass" without taking a divot.  She shouldn't be afraid to take a divot after the ball.

Just looking at what she was doing, I'd guess turn back and turn through, She also looks like she had a light and fun approach.

Hard to say what’s going on in the mind of any player. Just need to address the areas they can improve. Looks like a very good action for a beginner so lots of potential here.

 

Like a lot of beginners there is not a lot of wrist set at the top of the backswing and transition. I’m guessing they are trying to straight arm the club through impact like a putt. You can teach them to drag the handle through to get some shaft lean but that is just a band aid. At some point they need to learn how to fully set the wrist, load a little bit more in transition and fully release past impact to maximise their distance potential.

She looks less "ball bound" or "keep your head down-ish" in the swings with progress but I'm no coach!  Good work!

So we started by encouraging her to take three practice swings in which she had to allow the sole of the club to interact with the ground.  Only when she did three in a row she could move on to striking the ball.

 

She was afraid of the chance that the club might break.

 

First time I had come across this.

That's a new one.  Good job with her.  She really does have some good moves for a new player.

That's not entirely crazy.  Golf clubs at first glance don't look all that robust and most items women encounter in everyday life wouldn't stand up well to bashing into the ground. 

 

I worry about breaking things when swinging irons.  However, it's my wrists I worry about so I have learned to take very shallow divots or no divot at all.  Not the best way to play, but I get by.

I now worry about an elbow so yep, this is a real thing.  I played last summer following surgery but found myself picking the ball, especially on par 3s.  This year is so much better, but when I hit something really nice and look down I usually see an old friend - a proper divot, lol, that I still want to see more of.

 

However, usually it's random things dead right that can be in danger from time to time, lol.

I don't think a lot of folks realize how firm conditions can be even if there is some scrubby bermuda on top.  There are times down here when you pretty much need a hammer to drive a tee into the ground. Taking a traditional divot is not only impossible, but dangerous to try.

I actually think that some folks have a natural, instinctual, aversion to hitting the ground with the  club. It just seems wrong and kind of dangerous.   

 

So the idea of taking a divot at all is weird, and taking the divot after the ball (hitting down to make the ball go up) seems even weirder.
