Same here touch. I’m not an NBA fan, but I am a Warriors fan. Their games are the only NBA I watch. When I think Pistons my mind goes to ‘The Bad Boys’ era.

There was some concern if the weather was going to be suitable for golf two Monday's ago. I called Mike and he said the other dudes felt it was too cold and weren't going to give it a go. I asked Mike for his honest assessment and he told me he didn't think it was going to be too bad. I was in and I drove down across the state line and traveled one exit past Links to meet Mike at Village

Greens. It had been a month or more since we played this course. My the grass at the entrance was a brilliant shade of green. I went in the pro shop and had a nice little kibitz with Joe. He said that there had been rain and it would be cart path only for our round. I grabbed a cart and loaded up and layered up some more. It was sunny, but it was windy and cold. This was to be a battle just between Mike and myself. Village Greens is a tough but fair test and it has some of the trickier greens that I play. Many of the greens are quite small, and most of them feature plenty of slopes and banks.

The temperature was 44* and the wind was blowing 15-25 mph so we opted to play the senior tees. We also opted to forgo the driving range warm up session. I didn't even roll a single putt prior to the round. It was blustery so instead I did a bunch of stretching indoors in the pro shop and then headed to the 1st tee.

Donning 4 layers of warm clothes on top and with foot warmer pouches in my shoes and in my pants pockets I sent my first tee shot skyward at 12:30 PM.

The first hole is a zig zag par 5. I found the fairway with driver. I hit a knock down 5 iron from there to set up my approach shot. I hit the short iron a little chubby and came up short of the green. Not a good chip followed and then I missed the putt for par. I took bogey 6 on 1. Hole number 2 is a severely sloped downhill dogleg left par 4. My hybrid tee shot failed to draw. I had a tree partially in the way for my second shot. I nicked the tree. I did not get that up and down from 45 yards. Bogey again. Two over thru two. Fairway & green with 2 putts for my first par on three. I three putted 4. Three over thru four. I was making every effort to keep my body centered while hitting shots but the constant wind made that difficult to do. I started to play more steadily. The fifth hole is a long uphill par four with water all down one side. I smoked a driver center cut. I had 168 left. It was into the wind. I got all of a 3 wood and found the green. I had 35 feet for birdie. Just missed, so a par. I was happy with that as it was fight up that hill in the wind. 3 over thru five. Number six is an all water carry short par 3 (6th photo). It played 135 down wind. I hoisted a very high 9 iron that rode the wind and found the pin. I had a 4 footer for my first bird, failed, but again a useful par. 3 over still. Number 7 is a skinny downhill tree lined on both sides par 4 of 325 yards. I hit 3 wood and found fairway. I had 122 in. I pulled 8 iron in and effort to not be short. I thinned it a tad and I did end up short. I had a bunker between me and where I wanted to land my pitch on the green. I assessed what was left and got a number I liked. I took a half swing with lob wedge and hit my mark on the green. It rolled into the cup. First birdie and no putter needed. That brought me down to two over thru seven. On number 8 it my normal 5 wood to the top of the hill so not to go any further and run down into the large pond that splits the fairway. From there I hit a 3 wood again into the wind from 170. It was another solid approach shot with a fairway wood. I two putted for a very good par. Number 9 is the toughest par 3 on the course. It is rather long and all uphill. The green is well protected with bunkers and the green is severely banked. It was playing 158 and again it was into the cold wind. I pulled 5 wood and it wasn't enough. I came up 10 yards short left. My pitch from there did not take the bank as I had planned and parked way short. I three whacked the sucker from there. Nice a Double 5 on number 9 for LP. I made the turn with a four over 40. Mike was one over. I have pretty much no chance against Mike at Village Greens, remember he was club champ there numerous times when he as a member back in the 90's and into the aughts. He so often makes it look easy playing that tough track.

We grabbed a sandwich and hot chocolate from the restaurant at the turn.

Number 10 is a wide downhill par 4 (3rd photo). Solid driver and a 6 iron to 20 feet. Missed that birdie bid. Par on 10. 11 is an uphill par 3. I missed the green just left but made a quality up and down for the save. I hit fairways and greens on the next two holes and did not botch it up on the greens. How about that 4 straight pars to start the back 9. 4 over thru 13. Mike birdied 10 and 11 to get to one under. On 14 I hit a poor chip and made bogey. 5 over. 15 is a par 3 over water to the tiniest green on the course (4th photo). It played 130, I pulled 8 iron. I hit it to 5 feet. Lipped out the birdie try. I remain 5 over. 16 is the number two handicap hole and it is here that I made my highest score of the day. I pulled my hybrid tee shot and rinsed it. Re tee. Fairway found the second time. 4th shot airmailed the green. Made a mess, made a triple bogey 7. UGH that was misery. Eight over with two holes to play. Mike says to me to stop swaying off the ball on the 17th tee. He told me he noticed me laterally swaying away during my back swing instead of just turning back with a solid foundation with my legs. I knew I was moving off my shots all day but with Mikes comment I made now even more effort to not sway. I didn't sway and played wonderful golf on the final two holes coming in. Fairways and greens with two putts a piece. Par Par finish. I posted an 80 for the day. Mike had 75. We played in just under 3 hours. I was quite satisfied that I shot 8 over for the day for in those cold and blustery conditions it surely could have gotten much worse. Heck if I can post 80 on a day like that I just might be able to keep it within 10 strokes of P3P on some famous golf course in Ireland. LOL, probably not.

I love the game and I so enjoy playing golf with Mike, and because of those two things I dug deep and called upon my Finnish Viking DNA and played a respectful round down in South Carolina two Monday's ago.

Together we battled in winter golf conditions. Mike and I still found it fun to be on the golf course that afternoon. The round certainly tested our ability to play in the wind.

Thanks...it all depends on the where the low sets up. If it goes further east we'll be okay. Either way, we are not forecasted to get much snow (>2 inches) but we might get some sleet/ice/freezing rain...

I have an NBA story with an NFL tie-in...My wife and I spent the early 1990's living in Metro Detroit. I had a co-worker whose wife had connections with The Piston's home arena, The Palace of Auburn Hills and we very occasionally had the mid-court Piston's Owner's suite tickets filter down to us. The big press conference was scheduled for the next day and everyone was jovial and we all had a great time. They (naturally) didn't know us but if we were in the owner's suite we must be somebodies, right?

We spent the most time with Mrs. Mitchell. She was elated about the signing but was exhausted from the whirlwind week they had just spent travelling to various NFL cities. She asked us about our neighborhood and we laughed and told her with the amount of money they just received they will not be living anywhere near us! Scott did a few interviews from the suite and we saw them on the 11 o'clock sports news...cool night!

A post-script: About 5 years ago we were on a quick vacation at the beach in Brunswick County, NC (south of Wilmington). We were getting gas and a nice truck pulled up next to us. I was wearing a Lions cap and as the older gentleman began pumping his gas noticed it and asked me if I was a Lions fan. I admitted yes and he said his ex son-in-law was once their QB and he wondered if I remembered Scott Mitchell. I laughed and told him I actually had met his daughter on her first night in Detroit and that she was very pleasant (and quite a looker)!

However...even though it was all rosy that evening the Lions were still the Lions and I found an article saying his contract is considered one of the 30 worst in NFL History.

Once again I am going to alter a pick. I already a few days ago doubled down my Green Bay pick and I am going to do it once more to another pick of mine. What is my thinking behind this second pt'd play? I am wagering two points on Tennessee because just like the Packers they are at home, the number one seed, and had a week off to rest. The fact that King Henry is returning only adds confidence to my wager. I like the Bengals and Joe Burrow a bunch so I won't be too upset if Cincinnati does pulls it out.
