New Addition To The Bag

I’m wondering about that too. As in why would someone go through the trouble? The limited research I did on 8813’s and 8802’s brought me to the conclusion that there were quite a few variations. The main difference between the two models were the 8813’s had a perpendicular sight line along the back of the blade and a few versions had no line but a red dot. As far as I can tell, the dot is slightly recessed and possibly an insert of some type? It did pass the unofficial nickel test. Older versions face height fit a nickel on its edges and remakes were taller. Maybe others can chime in.

This is a Ping Eye, not Eye 2, one iron. I just bought the standard black dot version on Monday for $25, a sentimental item that helped me qualify for the 1983 and 1984 Oklahoma Open when I lived in Edmond, Oklahoma. 16* of loft, ZZ Lite shaft, real ugly Ping Dylagrip.  I'll use it when it is too windy for the 5-wood and should get 180-190 out of it in contrast to the 210-220 I got back in 1983/1984.

The Eye had a short market life compared to the Eye 2.

Had a guy on our college golf team that could throw the ball on the tee box and rip his Ping Eye 1 iron about 250 on a string. The driving iron before driving irons were cool…

I was looking at 8813s on eBay and the dot versions were all from Great Britain. That is another data point that they were made in Scotland, as I've read before. I've also read that some were made in Australia. But, once again, I've read both true and crazy stuff on the web, so it is a hypothesis and not fact. I haven't seen any reference to Japan, but it certainly is plausible.

I like to think mine was made in Canada because of the all red paint fill, but I may be reaching with that guess. But since my grandfather was born in Halifax, I'm sticking with it.

Question: Are your 8802’s roughly the same swing weight as the 8813’s? Took mine out for 18 today, love the no fuss blade look at address and it’s small size, but it’s definitely a light putter. Coming from my Ping Anser, I’m leaning towards adding some lead tape to it.

I’ll weigh them tomorrow and see.

If you like that style but want a heavier putter, one of my Old Master W802s is noticeably heavier than the 8802. Of my two W802s, the bright chrome version is similar to my 8802, but the satin version is heavier. The sole stampings are different too, but you can really see it in the finish. I don’t think Old Master made an 8813 version, which is too bad because my satin w802 is a great putter and as good as my ‘64 8802.

Played 18 yesterday with the 8813. For whatever reason the swing weight wasn’t an issue after a few holes. I now need to deal with the glare coming off the backside from the sun. When it was overhead and off my right shoulder while putting, it presented a good deal of glare.

I can see how collections start…..a satin 8813/8802 version is now on my radar.

After a bunch of rounds with the 8813 the swing weight is no longer an issue. I kinda got used to it and adapted. Similar to setting up with blades, I especially like it’s effect of making the ball seem larger next to it.

It’s as light as a feather though

It's one aspect I've noticed with the older blade putters.  Fortunately, it's fixable with assistance from the lead tape gods...   🙂
