Where would you play if you had one day in the Portland area?

Recommended Posts

The biggest issue I see here is March.

Pumpkin is an option but in March it is most likely still a swamp. Reserve should be starting to come out of it’s winter slop phase. Your best bet would be Langdon, Stone Creek and OGA can be a big hit or miss.

Now the 2nd issue is when in March? Almost all courses punch in March and the timing varies wildly. Some punch the 1st or 2nd week and some will punch the. 1st week in April.

Hope this helps

Thanks for your reply. Looking for overall beauty and design of the course and not too concerned if it's still wet or has punched greens. I would be playing March 15 or 16.

I am thinking we are referring the most obvious choice (and I live near Portland Maine) 😏

It has been quite a bit of time since I was last there (Oregon) but Pumpkin Ridge was a memorable round of golf.

Yes, Oregon is what I meant. Will take Pumpkin Ridge into consideration. Thanks for your reply.

If this weather keeps up you won’t be playing Pumpkin until July.

Holy moly is it wet, as wet as I have ever seen our course.

mallrat's course is my home course, and it's widely regarded as the best draining public track in the PDX area.  If Langdon is waterlogged, then that tells you a lot.  So far, it's been a a lousy golf winter 'round here...

Pumpkin in March will likely have very soggy fairways and at least a couple temp greens.  Lots depends on how much rain has fallen in the preceding days of your tee time.  Langdon and Stone Creek are your best bets.

"take that, you miserable little white swine!"

If you have a full day to spare and haven’t done Bandon, I’d suggest considering that. Figure 4 hours each way, but if haven’t played there and won’t get out this way in the  foreseeable future, it’s worth the effort if you don’t mind driving. Leave at 5am, tee off at 10am, back in Portland by early evening. Yeah, it makes for a long day, but I’ve done it many times.

I’ll be the contrarian here and say, depending on conditions, Pumpkin Ridge is a far better course than Langdon Farms and it’s not even close (and I say this as someone who plays Langdon Farms regularly). That said, Pumpkin Ridge doesn’t drain well and can be exceedingly wet during the winter months while Langdon Farms drains very well.  Play Langdon Farms November - April and Pumpkin Ridge from May - October.

As a Portland, OR resident, I'd concur that conditions-wise, your best bet in mid-March is Stone Creek GC or Langdon Farms.  All other courses will be super muddy.

Another option is Elk Ridge GC out in Carson, WA.  It's about an hour east of Portland along the Columbia River (beautiful drive).  Great views of the river gorge, drains better than any of the previous mentioned courses, big/undulating greens.  It's a lot of fun to play and the views are amazing.  Be sure to hit Backwoods Brewing Co. (2 minutes away).  Great beer, great food.  Only caveat is that it can be a little colder/windier out in Carson vs. Portland, so keep an eye on the weather.

I was recently reading about this course. I never heard of it and the views look incredible! I will definitely play it this year though.
