I've continuously tried to find a better lob wedge than the 258.08 and just can't, despite how great all of the ones since then have looked . . .

The 258.08 may wind up back in the bag for yet another season . . .

Three months later and I've got two 200 Series wedges in the bag.

Utility: (21) New Level NLU-01 True Temper Dynamic Gold X100

There aren't any that I don't like, but the SM7s were probably my favorite.

At that time, I was all about the wedges and was carrying 46-F / 50-F / 54-S / 58-D / 62-M

I loved that setup, but obviously it left some holes on the other end.

200 series and it’s not close.

200 series tour issue with CC or sm4 grooves  ( same grooves different stampings  ) are the holy grail of vokey wedges.

Back in '03 I was able to pick up new 58 and 52 200 series Oil Cans that had been built for Tom Pernice. They were the best wedges I'd ever played and still the only Vokey's I've ever bagged. A little over a year and unable to find exact replacements I turned to the dark side and began using the Zodia KM-Tour US Spec. Really hard to come back from that...

The answer to better golf is work your butt off and learn how to hit it better, farther, and make more putts.

This might be a cop out but I've never hit wedges better than my raw SM8s. Honestly I have no interest in SM9 because I just can't see it being any better. They just flat out perform and I've used every version since the original Spin Milled...I even had a 200 series lob wedge in the bag for a while. It just seems like I can't miss with them.

Another vote for the 200/SM1.  While I could probably replace the 248.06 (bent to 50) and the 54.08 SM1 if I had to, there is NOTHING in the current lineup that is similar to the shape and feel of of the 258.08 oil can. They are sized just right and they don’t have crazy sole shapes/bounces.  I find them much more predictable on chips and pitches, and easier to control trajectory on fuller shots. Mine will be in the bag until the USGA rips them out in 2024.  There’s a reason why the big boys asked Vokey to continue to make the 200s available (with conforming grooves) long after they were discontinued at retail. Personally, I wish they’d offer the TVD(?) version again through the custom shop. I’d get a set in a heartbeat.

I've had a very nice set of SM6s (brushed steel - 50 / 54 / 58 w/ S300 shafts) that I got used and then wore out, a beautiful set of SM8s (raw - 46 / 50 / 56 bent to 55 / 60 with S400 shafts), and now SM9s (jet black - 50 / 56 bent to 55 / 60 with S200 shafts....those need to get swapped). I've also hit TaylorMade Milled Grind HiToe wedges (52 / 56 / 60 w/ Recoil 95F4 graphite shafts) when my son had those when he first really got into golf (and subsequently passed them onto my wife who still has them).

So far, my favorites are:

SM8 with S400 shafts for 50 and 55 degree wedges (both F grind / 10 degree bounce) and SM9 with S200 shafts for 60 degree (M grind / 8 degree bounce).  For a guy who didn't really play a lot of golf until after college, and then took another 20 years off while playing a lot of hockey and raising kids, I can make that 60 degree dance unless the lie is REALLY thin winter Bermuda grass w/ no overseeding.  Even with range balls, the spin an SM9 puts on a ball is amazing.  Now, I know these are cast wedges and I'd like to give some of the forged custom wedges on the market a try to see if they'd have a little softer feel, but I'm too poor for that if I want to actually, you know, be able to play golf!

All that said, I may go ahead and swap my SM9 50 and 55 degree wedges to the Nippon 1150gh shafts that my fitter recommended I go to when I first got my clubs.  At the time, I chose to get the 50 degree SM9 instead of breaking up the SM8 set by keeping the 50 degree wedge from it.  If I'd gone w/ the (very expensive) upgraded Nippon shafts in all 3 wedges, I'd have gone over budget enough to get in trouble with the boss, so I could either get 2 SM9 wedges with Nippon shafts or get 3 with the S200s.  I had good spin and dispersion #s on the S200s, so I stuck with those.  What I couldn't really tell there was how bad my gapping was going to be from the PW in my Mizuno Pro 223 set with the Nippon shafts to the 50 degree SM9 with the S200 shaft...and it's huge...like almost 30 yards at full swing speeds.

The next project on the wedges after I swap the shafts is making the stock jet black finish look like the SM8s I just sold...I want that raw look and feel back.
