PRGR question

So just got the PRGR launch monitor and had a question about a reading we got last night. I’m assuming this is just a mistake, but wanted to double check.

I thought I read that 1.50 was max smash factor? Is that not the case? Or is this number just incorrect?

Smash is the ball speed/club speed.  Likely either the club or the ball speed was a misread.

Correct though some tour guys have been know to get it to 1.51 with a driver.

The PRGR is a pretty accurate device when it comes to Ball Speed and Club Head Speed.  One thing you have to remember is that the Carry is based on an algorithm where the ball is probably only being tracked for 8 ftish.  Since it isn't measure other data bases I wouldn't take the Carry as word.  It is probably close, but not exact.

Close it all I need at this point. Needed something to help motivate the boys to hit balls in the garage in the winter. This allows them to play games and have a little fun. Plus trying to add some distance over the winter. Hopefully seeing their swing speed will help them improve it

According to my son's coach, it's possible to go over 1.50 if the club face is closed, and thus de-lofts the face.  

Having said that, 1.56 does sound a bit high and I'd take with grain of salt what these consumer devices report.

All launch monitors have bad numbers sometimes including trackman.   The biggest difference in the cheaper devices is they have less sensors and camera's so it matters much more how you position it.

 

When working with these cheaper launch monitors they are great as way to measure things you can't see.  You really want something that give's you more numbers then just speed because it gives you more things to work on.  With speed the only thing you can tell is that one swing was faster than another.

 

When you're are out on the course you can usually tell if a launch number is giving you good numbers because the ball should be going as far as it says.   From experience it seems most of them are most accurate with a 7 iron in hand. The further you get away from the 7 iron the easier it is to see issues.

Those are great at measuring ball speed and swing speed. Smash can get very off. I've seen 1.6 before. But generally the carry is pretty close to what I would expect. 1.5 is not the max smash for what its worth. Its what is know to be a perfect hit but you can exceed 1.5.

Even the cheapest launch monitor is more consistent than 95% of golfers swing. The biggest enemy is variance. Even on the cheaper LMs, and I own both a G80 and an ES14, but have access to a TM, if you hit enough balls, enough being 50+ with each club at least, and throw out the wild outliers, you will get pretty dang close to your accurate carry numbers. Will the TM and GCs be closer, sure, but you will still have a window that is very good for the VAST majority of golfers. I can tell you my G80/ES14 is very close to a TM range. Smash is definitely one I don't pay attention to on anything other than TM/GC because those are the only ones measuring the actual club and ball not making estimates based solely on the ball; however, the PRGR is supposedly pretty good on swing speed.
