Asheville in June

Looking for a course recommendation in June for Asheville NC and surrounding areas.

The best available is the Omni Grove Park. It's a Ross, in good shape and fun. Expensive but worth it once.

The next level is Reems Creek and Broadmoor. Then, easy, cheap and fun are the Asheville Muni and Black Mountain.

Asheville isn't a golf destination. Visitors only play golf to make themselves hungry and thirsty. The food and craft beer scene here is remarkable.

I played Omni Grove Park last June when we were there and really enjoyed it.  Course wasn't overly long but was in good shape with a fun layout.  Going back in March and most likely playing it again.  There are a few threads on Asheville here that I used for my research and it seems like the majority of them recommend Omni or driving over to Cherokee and playing Sequoyah National which I'm going to try and do this trip as well.

How far is it to the Mt. Mitchell course? I’ve never played there, but I’ve been told it’s a good course.

Bit more than an hour from Asheville. Many find the course worth a visit once. It's cart-path-only all the time. They sell baggies of dog food pellets in the pro shop so that you can feed the obese trout in the river. 😲

I stayed at the Grove Park Inn but didn’t play the course. I opted for Reems Creek and really enjoyed it. Easy 25ish minute drive and green fees were more than fair. Had a good mix of holes with some fun elevation and views. I would recommend it and happily return.

We were there in mid October, peak tourist season, so this may explain it but it didn’t look like many actual golfers were playing the course. From my visit to the clubhouse most people appeared to be on vacation and wanted to get a round in. I spoke with a couple of guest who had played earlier in the day and pace of play 5+ was mentioned by nearly everyone.

I stopped and played the Asheville Muni on the way to Myrtle Beach once, it was a fun round. Busy golf course.

Here's another idea:

Etowah is always fun, but never deluxe. Three nine hole courses. The South course's #2 tee is home to a cool collection of white squirrels. They make the visit worth it. 👍

Etowah is now a must play just to see the Squirrels.

Asheville muni is ok, I played Broadmoor and enjoyed it, lots of water. The place that I absolutely loved though was Springdale in Canton, somewhat remote, definitely will enjoy it, I played it about 4 years ago and still think about that place. https://www.springdalegolf.com/golf/

You would enjoy play Maggie Valley also. Both great Mtn courses!

Was going to play Omni again when there next week but I like to be in one of the early groups to get back and do stuff with the family.  Unfortunately when I looked at tee times they don’t start early tee times for a few more week and I couldn’t get out before like 10 or 10:30…

oh well going to try and talk my wife in checking out the sites in Cherokee while I play Sequoyah….

I'm really glad to see this. I'm part of a regular golf trip with 28 guys and we're headed to Springdale in May. The guys who have been there before rave about the atmosphere. We are staying in cabins on the property. Looking forward to it.

Be prepared for a little different view as you drive up to Springdale. In August of 2021 the parts of Canton and Cruso along the Pigeon River were subjected to severe flash flooding from Tropical Storm Fred.

I played Springdale today and the course is fine. By May it'll be in prime condition. I was talking with their GM and he said that many of their small bridges on the course were washed away and have been replaced. He said that the water on the first green was chest deep . . . you'd never know it now.

Cool. Our original dates were axed after that storm. This is our make-up weekend. We do a three-day modified stableford format as an individual comp. This year we also have 27 holes of Ryder Cup style team competition. It’s always a blast.

Fresh sand in the bunkers and lots of new and recently repaired cart paths. The carts seemed brand new with GPS (including the annoying geo-fencing.)

I'm in Asheville and our course is closed for spring maintenance this week, so based on your earlier nice post about Springdale, my pal and I chose to pay them a visit.
