I didn’t know that the black has more traction.  Thanks for the tip.  Will try one out

Yeah idk if it’s the same as the black DFX from Japan, but the original black DFX was slimmer and had more traction than the gray; I think the original was much lighter in weight too like a PP58 standard. Now basically all current stock Odyssey grips weigh 75-77grams

Another good option is this grip: https://www.golfgalaxy.com/p/odyssey-white-hot-pro-putter-grip-ss13odywtehtprogrp/ss13odywtehtprogrp

Best Odyssey grip produced in my personal opinion, just a simple rubber material with a nice texture - almost velvet style. Quite popular on Tour. I believe that’s what Gooch uses on his Trihot #2 as well

But that GP Red-Star is also a great option

Is that grip 69 grams? Would that not be too light compared to the 75g grip that’s on the putter.

I have the Seven and Double Wide and spent the summer playing with grips. I’ve used the Zenergy 2.0 Pistol - 51g, Zenergy Tour Pistol - 69g and then the Zenergy 1.0 Pistol - 83g.

Out of those for me the  Pistol 1.0 had the best balance on both the Seven and Double Wide.

I also included a pic of the Seven next to a 5.5. She’s definitely a big girl but an absolute pleasure to putt with.

Have had the DW CH all season. Love the feel of it. Have it at 37” with a wrist lock grip.

Picked up an armlock sik Flo-m and I like the idea, just don’t like the feel of it and it is very unforgiving, you miss the exact middle and it comes up 8 feet short on a 20 footer.

thinking of going to a face balanced #7 tri hot and making it an armlock

anyone doing this?

Any chance you could share some thoughts on how the Seven and Double Wide compare? Which one has more toe hang? Obviously the looks are dramatically different but do you have any notes on their performance compared to each other?

I currently play the Double Wide shape (in a Ping Anser D, but it's a very similar shape). But seeing the new lineup, I'm hoping the Seven with the plumber's neck will be offered for lefties this time around.

69grams is correct, and no that is not "too light" at all. It would hardly change the swing-weight at all, maybe a 1pt increase; which is not noticeable whatsoever. There's no universally "optimal" grip-weight, take a look at Odyssey Tour staffers using these putters (or any putter) - almost all use different grip styles of various weights. It's all personal preference

Here’s a super unscientific comparison showing toe hang by hold both in the same place on the shafts. The Double Wide has slightly more toe hang compared to the Seven. They both putt great, the Seven feels more stable to me just due to its size and I can also use the fangs to help with alignment.

This is awesome, and I appreciate the unscientific check, thank you! I’ve always liked the Seven shape, and my putting stroke has changed a little after a set-up adjustment — I’d actually like to find something with just a touch less toe hang. If they make the new one for lefties, it could be perfect.

Would anybody know what the difference in moi would be between a

Special select Newport and an odyssey 5k #2?

Would there be that much difference at all?

The whole idea behind the 5k line is that it has the high MOI/Stability of a mallet, packed into a blade.

The 5k line is technically quite a bit more stable/forgiving than a traditional milled blade like a Scotty or a Bettinardi.

It shouldn’t punish you as much on off center strikes and still get the ball to the hole more so than the Scotty would.

Being that it has a soft or as some would say, a “mushy” white hot insert, the 5k may have a slight adjust period when it comes to distance control if you’re currently using a milled putter.

For the 5K mallet style putters (Seven, Rossie) is the MOI from this style pointless then compared to say White Hot, Versa, or AI One (with insert) models of the Seven and Rossie designs?  Thanks.

Good question. I think the MOI of the Tri-Hot mallets is also higher (the reason why they’re bigger) than the “regular” versions, but I’m not completely positive on that.

I always had figured, based on when they were released, the Eleven mallets had similar MOI as the 5K blades.  But then the following year the Seven and Rossie 5K came out, so who knows.

I have been interested in a wide flange putter for sometime.  I finally pulled the trigger.  I just picked up a Double Wide CH from Callaway Pre-owned.  Hope it makes it here by the weekend so I can give it a go on the course. Supposed to be fairly warm this weekend.  🤞

I love mine. I ended up selling the Seven just because of already having a X 5.5 but I’ll keep my Double Wide for when I’m feeling blade-ish.

What do you think is the lowest weight grip I could go to without it messing up how the putter should feel.

Would 65g be ok or is that too low?

At no point will you be messing up how the putter “should” feel. The putter “should” feel how *you* want it to feel. There’s nothing special about the stock setup; Odyssey staffers on Tour use their preferred grip and play with their preferred head weight - which is all personal preference.

And remember, Odyssey doesn’t swing-weight by length (aka the headweight for a 33” Odyssey will be the same headweight as a 35” Odyssey). So if you play <35”, there’s a decent chance you might find the stock headweight, and swing-weight, to be a bit on the light side; which is why they sell their overpriced weight kits.

A 65g will result in a swing-weight about 2pts higher than the original. There’s nothing special about the original swing-weight

I have thought the same for ages about that. Scotty change their weights on the putters depending on their length so why does Odyssey not do this?

I assume it’s easier, and less costly, to just manufacture one head with the same weight. And it adds the extra incentive to purchase their overpriced weights separately. Very few OEM’s dynamically change stock head weight by length like Scotty does - even other premium retail lines like Ping PLD, Betti, etc, don’t do it. But it does seem to be getting more common, all TM putters are now weighted by length i believe

But there are pro’s and con’s to Scottys method - some people find that their stock headweights are a bit too heavy nowadays. It used to be 330g/340g/350g for 35-33” lengths, now they’re about 10 grams heavier at each length (since the stock grips have gotten heavier). It’s all personal preference, but - I agree - it’d be nice if Odyssey followed the same practice

Agreed.  I wish Odyssey adjusted as well.  I measured a bunch of my putters a year and a half ago and generally found the Odyssey 34" putters to be in the D2-D6 range and their 35" putters to be E1-E3.

Not sure what Scotty 35" putters are (with their lighter head weights), but my few stock 34" Scotty's were all right about D3.

Loving this 5k tri hot I just picked up on eBay.  Haven’t ever seen a slant neck triple wide like it for sale before.  Anyone know if this was a standard model or custom? image.jpeg.edb8a9f46e06b341528afaee84515a8c.jpeg

I haven't seen it with a slant neck like that, on the Odyssey site, they just show the double bend or the CS triple wide. Does the face and bottom of the putter look the same as normal tri-hots?
What shaft did they end up using, very curious! Looks like a great putter. Loving my double bend, but very intrigued!

It says triple wide on the bottom and looks just like the cs and double bend versions.  Face is the same as well with the same insert.  It has a standard stroke lab shaft.  Great feeling
