I'd heard that stat floated around and figured I'd see if it was true.  I couldn't find anything newer or any from the '70s or '80s.

The USGA handicapping section of their website is terrible if you are looking for data other than the bar graph of handicaps by range.  Was hoping to see that graph or the data set that was shown in the GD article.

This arguing about why there is parity is silly.  Golf is unlike other sports.  Golf has a ceiling and always has.  You can be an amazing golfer but it is exponentially harder to shoot a 59, vs a 69 no matter your talent level and conditions on the course on a given day.  You could be a robot and not beat a player that gets hot and sinks 80 foot putts for eagles on back to back holes on the final day.  That is golf.

The other thing that isn't being considered is the will and determination to win.  That is not a talent, but a drive.  Talent wise, I believe there is parity.  Desire to win, I believe there just isn't as much of it.  Tiger and Jack hold almost unbreakable records.  The purses are so large that you are a millionaire after one tour win and that could take the wind out of a pro's sails thus diminishing their drive to win.  Look at Rory.  Obviously has the talent, but he isn't becoming Tiger like for 2 reasons.  1) He doesn't have the drive 2) talent parity, he is no longer the only one comparable to Tiger in talent.  I think DJ, Rory, JT, JS, Colin Mor, Heck even Bubba Watson all have the talent to win any given tournament but because of parity, because of chance, because of lack of drive they won't.

This is all just my opinion of course based on my observations over the years.

perhaps someone can help me out here

we were discussing why there are no great players active in golf.

I characterised clevited's arguments as 1. luck and 2. no drive to win.

(I countered this that luck didnt stop anyone up to and including Tiger 1.0, and that other sports reward their athletes handsomely and dont have any trouble producing extreme outliers)

He has told me that I have missed the point and that there is a lot more to his argument than that. For the life of me, I cant find it in this post, or any other. I am positive its not simply that he doesnt have the class to admit when he's wrong/found out, it must be me.

I can't wait for the people to rush to the store to be the first to own one.

Come try the spec driver for a Tour pro, set with low loft and an open face.  You can't get the ball in the air with it.  What's the difference?

No one needs to play what the pros play.

So apparently you have the goods to play what the pros play.  If there is a condition of competition which stipulates drivers with less spring face and a smaller head, are you going to try one?  Or pass?

i don’t play any tournament golf.

if i did, i guess i’d be forced to play whatever kept me within the rules.

but if they switched to a spongy ball and small dead head, i’d be less interested in tournaments than i am now.

Lol, I second the speak for yourself statement.  I play 5.5 degrees, open face XR16 LD head.  I launch it 15 to 18 degrees typically.

I'm no Jamie or Kyle but I do own an XR16.  Who knew I was supposed to get it in the LD version.  Probably why mine is only adjustable to 8 degrees.

I just checked out ebay... for a 6 year old club they're asking $315 to $501.  Both are heads only.  It'd better crush it a mile...

yeah. when you factor in a shaft, 400+ for an experiment is a little steep.

besides, my CHS and ball speed with my gamer is more important to me anyway.

Watched a bit of the event today.  Pretty typical drives of 350, 360, 370.  All in a day’s work on the tour

care to elaborate how much of that 350 is carry and how much is roll out?

Some rollout.  Don’t have the stats.  Not hating.  That’s what a lot of golf is now, driver-wedge.  I got to a plus doing the same thing.

also, who hit one 370?

im looking at the tour cast numbers and see a few (on the same holes, not surprisingly) around 350-355.

not seeing anything beyond that though.

i play a ping g425LST 9* at 7.5*

I have had several LD specific heads over the years.  Taught myself to hit 10* up on the ball as I once had aspirations to pursue long drive.  Then i got married and had kids so that dream left.  Because of that though, all I can play are low lofted clubs which you pretty much can only get with the LD spec clubs.  Launch them often over 20* with anything 7* and up.  Not ideal.

XR16 has proven very durable so far but definitely not very forgiving especially due to its loft.  I have cracked 3 Krank heads in short order, this has already outlasted them I think.  Good club.  Also have a Brute 2.0, and an older XR LD head for backups.

Sometimes older is better, hate the modern stuff. Too low of spin and too high of launch for me.  Also much harder to feel where strike was which I despise.

10* up is extreme haha.

i caved in 2 sim heads, a sim2 head, and a G410 head in the last two seasons.

so far i’m loving the G425.

my best drives launch in the 8-11* range. i work hard to keep the ball down because naturally i have a really high ball flight and i just get eaten alive in the wind.

i’ve never messed with a LD head but i’ve wanted to. i was up in the 142mph range with a 48” driver setup.

There's nothing quite like talking a golf equipment roll back with a bunch of equipment nerds who have swing speed and just want to hit the ball as long as possible!  😁

Some of us worked very hard to have that ability, but ask any of us and we will all tell you it is a blessing and a curse.  Get it wrong, it often goes very wrong.  Try controlling the ball at tour speeds and tell me how easy it is.  They make it look easy because they worked very hard at it and learned to control it well enough to use at the highest level.
