"You must be a great ballstriker"

Good to hear you got the complete set now.   I can imagine the raised eyebrows at a Club Champion bringing in that old iron.  In their mind you can’t even break 100 without a $3000 custom fitting and clubs.

My daughter was helping me clean up the set of 1959 Dyna-Powered’s I posted last night and she commented about how cool it was that the would put real leather grips on clubs back in the day.

I explained to her that buying a set of irons was a once every 10 year or so purchase, so clubs were made to be used for a long time and hold up.  People would become intimately familiar with their clubs and wouldn’t be looking to change every other year.

Golf more than any other sport is about perceived technology gains and marketing of the equipment than really any others.

I recently bought a set of PXG’s and they are already gone.  Loft for loft went no further than my KZG’s or 80’s Orlimars.

Do not know on the Orlimars but know for a fact the KZGs are solid and made of good steel. I still have the teardrops with the 5.5 shafts in case I feel the need for a forged CB.

Lately around my course we have had an emergence of PXG with a certain group of guys. One asked me on the range if I wanted to hit his new PXG irons? He is a good guy but one of those that thinks he can buy a game. He is not that good of a player because I have had him on a Shootout team before. He sorta pushed the issue in my eyes and maybe the Bad Stu came out because he kept insisting. I sorta politely declined by telling him they looked good but were not my "cup of tea" . He kept on I guess he is trying to spread the PXG gospel. Finally the Bad Stu came out and it was bad. I told him why in the hell would I want to hit a hollowed body made in China iron when I had a perfect set of solid forged one piece irons made in Georgia in the USA ? He backed off. I saw him that Saturday and apologized but he said he needed to apologize for pushing my button.

Yesterday after the shoouout I had a chance to hit a Demo set of ZX Srixons. Did not go well the sole grind was off for me and they looked clunky at the top line at address. I really wanted to like them. They also felt funny and they may have been due to the Modus 105 R shafts in them. I will admit that I have never hit that shaft before. Figured at this stage of my life not to spend the money if I go the CB route I have the KZGs and a set of TM TP CBs. For a CB I do like the TMs but do not like the feel of the Steel Fiber 95 shafts. I have enterained the thought of pulling the 5.5s out of the KZG

over the years, I've realized my misses trend a certain way.

I use that data to adjust/refine what I play with on course. this Ram set was just adjusted to a higher lie angle than I was accustomed to.

3* more than the Hogans I'd been using. that does account for some right misses I was seeing.

the long irons might have to come down a bit. the 3 and 4 are still kind of troubling me. 6-pw are just wonderful.

when I hit those and finish properly, it feels great and the shots are perfectly on line.

no - there is not going to be a 3k bag in my possession, even if ole man Lotto comes my way.

we have all learned about not being able to buy a game.  nice bag yes, new shoes of course. game no.

the CC fellow did share something that made me think -

said the weight of the R300's are 130g.

I have a Callaway 19 hybrid fitted with that shaft and others  w Aldila 85g graphites.

wonder  for consistency which I should work into the bag...

or does it matter ?

Personally, I would not radically change the shaft weights. If the clubs were designed for heavier shafts, the playing characteristics will be altered significantly by lighter shafts.

This is my own philosophy, you may feel differently.

maybe I mis-worded,

I asking - should I stick with heavier shafted hybrids or lighter to compliment the irons ?

not altering anything - I have both on hand.

Depends how it feels to you.  I play lighter shafts in modern irons (<100g)and as such use 65g shafts in my hybrids and 115g in my wedges.  There's a certain flow to how the clubs swing through the set.

I remember having a hybrid (SLDR) with 82g shaft and it felt ponderous next to the irons I was playing at the time (i25 w/graphite).  For me this was a poor combination.

My problem is LOFT -- Lack of friggin' talent

you sparked my brain.

I've played the FT hybrids with Aldila shafts for a long time with no issues. those were paired with the 845's/Tour 90's  or the Hogans/Apex 3's.

now that the Ram irons/DGR300's are in the bag - I may have a different tempo.

X2 hot hybrid was recently reshafted from a stiff light graphite to the DGR  thinking it would be a better fit , but may have changed balance a bit.

I overlooked that. so I just added some magic , AKA lead tape to strategic points and we shall see during tomorrow's play how it feels.

my Vokey 200's are KBS , and still swing fine.

I'm currently playing with something like this...

I've been using a 2 iron with my MP37 set.  The 37s have Recoil Proto 125 shafts.  The 2 iron has a Steelfiber i95.  If I'm not paying attention, that weight drop can result in some less than stellar swings with the 2i.

Also have a pair of hybrids I use in the 2i slot.  One has HZRDUS 80 (85?) Black, the other has NV105.  I find better continuity with the NV hybrid.

With my Golden Rams with NV105, I find the HZRDUS shafted hybrid fits reasonably well.

That's how it's been working for me.

I'll start by saying this isn't intended as argumentative as it may appear on the electronic page, I'm sorry if it appears so...

Shaft weight is a fitting characteristic, dependent on the player, not an overall club design attribute.  In Ye Olde Days, there wasn't much in the way of options.  These days, you can find shafts that will play the same as the Dynamic-est of Dynamics, at a significantly lower weight.

For that reason, it's a great time to be a golfer.  It can also be rather confusing.

Yep you nailed it 100%

No argument from me on shaft weight as a fitting characteristic. My point was that whenever you make a change where the weight distribution of a club is altered significantly, the feel and playability can be affected. We see it a lot in the hickory clubs where putting on a heavier grip or aggressive rust removal over time can alter the SW and feel to a point that it can be difficult to use. Like Stu, I use a lot of lead tape to savour to taste.

I am very much a feel player and play an assortment of clubs from the hickory era up to the present. I have a preference for shafts on the heavier side in most instances.
