Mizuno Custom Build Specs Way Off

Played my JPX 923 set for the first time today. Ordered my clubs more upright than normal and was hitting some balls at the range. Some clubs was hitting straighter, some clubs were going way right, like start line way right. Came home and checked the specs on my clubs. I have a Mitchell loft/lie machine, and some specs were way off. Needed to make sure it wasn't user error so I double checked with my standalone club spec gauge. Those measurements more or less matched my Mitchell measurements.

For reference, my order was 2 degrees weak, 0.5 degrees upright. The specs i listed below are what I ordered (not the stock specs).

What bothers me is all the clubs with the incorrect lie angle were even flatter than stock.

One thing to note, all the clubs that were the correct loft, or close to the correct loft, were the ones with a lie angle issue. The ones that had the correct lie angle were the ones that were bent way too weak.

EDIT: Typo on the GW ordered loft, should be 50 instead of 48.

Interesting correlation you noted at the end there. The fact that not a single club was correct in both specs and was furthest off on one when the other *was* correct feels like someone was either inexperienced and/or lazy when bending the clubs. Also interesting they are always weak and flat, never too strong or upright. Possibly someone bending for one spec, then switching angles and bending for the other without rechecking to make sure the first spec hadn't shifted due to not being properly aligned when bending. 0.5* increments can be tricky, especially if those weren't the Forged model, so some overshooting and bending back may have happened.

Regardless, super disappointing. Hopefully @Vosh68 can chime in, those wedges being that far off is wild.

my hypothesis is that when bending weak or when bending upright, the builder applied the force in a way that impacted the lie angle. From experience, i have bent at a slightly off angle causing both the lie angle and loft to change. But i always double check both measurements regardless if im bending for loft or lie change and them correct as needed

Yeah that's what I was thinking. Either that or the clubs were repeatedly improperly clamped so as to give bad readings. Either way no bueno.

Another consideration is the calibration status of OP's measuring equipment.  If it hasn't been calibrated in awhile then it makes comparison to Mizuno's (which I assume is routinely calibrated) via the ordered clubs a difficult endeavor.  If you have a set or 2 of irons that perform well and seemingly match your needed specs, also measure those with the equipment and compare measured loft/lie to the new set.

I have ordered a few different custom Mizzy sets recently, MP20, 919F & 223. Only 2 irons in the 3 sets were off, just make sure to check loft and lie after purcahse. Place I order from check them for me and adjust if necessary, no big deal. Also, make sure to check every year for changes (esp the forged irons), its a quick step that will ensure your clubs stay where you need them to be for gapping.

Its unfortunate to receive irons that are out of spec, but its an easy fix. Good luck.

Analog loft lie machines and analog spec gauges (the device that is totally separate/standalone from a bending machine) don't really go out of calibration very easily. Usually where there can be user error is measuring lie angle on a loft lie bending machine because you need to line up the club correctly. For loft, its hard to screw up that measurement on a loft lie machine.

I've got a JPX 921 Hot Metal set which is as close as you can get to comparing as a reference to my 923 set. I also frequently measure many different clubs. Every custom Ping iron i have purchased is just about perfect on loft/lie.

So I got some interesting information in regards to the loft lie issues people seem to be having.  I was building a custom set of 923 HMP at fairway jockey and they did not have loft or lie adjustments available.   I emailed them and they responded they have had issues bending them and have removed that service from their customization.   I subsequently emailed mizuno directly and will report back with their response.

Update:  Mizuno said there should be no issues bending loft or lie up to 2 degrees.  They also cannot speak to why there would be issues bending them.
