Scotty Cameron Turn of the Century Let's Talk Mill Spec Pro Platinum and Studio Stainless!

Recommended Posts

Hello gentlemen!! My post has been a while in the making, so it's very lengthy-3 Parts

I'd like to revive this discussion for those of us who would like to share their wisdom on the Scotty Cameron Mil-Spec Pro Platinum and Cameron Studio Stainless.

Why?

Recently, I finally put down the Ping Bronze Manganese Anser of my dad's from 1980. He purchased the morning of his 1980 Club Championship in larger GA town several years before I was born after his entire bag got stolen out of his beloved Jeep Grand Wagoneer the night before. Window shattered with a brick.

Pro Shop issued him some loaner irons. He went ahead and bought the bronze manganese Anser as well as Woods, a driver, wedges, and a brand new ping staff bag that was hard to find in that day!

Two Putters listed above, mil-spec and Studio stainless recent acquisitions. I'm the guy who wants his Putters original and stock, the way Karsten solheim and Scotty Cameron made them shaft, head, lie angle, length and grip.

The golf forums or eBay are great places to find a perfect match between condition and price.

No Restorations right now as I have very little extra time to fool around with all that. my father always said the old saying "if you want something done right..." sometimes, it seems l sink much more money into the restoration putter than if i just purchased a clean well cared for stock original. so that's what I did.

There's no right or wrong!

I personally want one that's been well cared for, oiled and cleaned before they were put away in a safe spot and kept in Immaculate condition. sometimes those can be pricey, so you have to find Comfort level of price and great condition.

The Studio stainless and mil-spec Putters I've listed pictures of I paid $262 a piece 525 total free shipping plus tax and it was more than worth it. I would have paid $370 a piece for them in this condition... Old classic Cameron Putters with no inserts will never be made again the way Scotty used to make them!

The studio stainless actually dawned on me recently as the only stainless steel putter Scotty ever produced that did not include an insert or removable weights... just one single piece of 303 stainless!

I'll post some pictures, mil-spec first...you guys tell me what you think. I have weighed the heads...shafts and grips all original with shaft bands still Immaculate condition.

only cleaned them up with a few of my go-to items I'll list in a post below.

Let's chat about anything involving these two putters as I've put a lot into creating this post and the ones below!

Anyone had any Scotty acquisitions lately?

If anyone cares to touch on their thoughts about feel or preference between the carbon steel and stainless steel or perhaps their opinion has evolved .

I've been putting in my hallway for 20 minutes when I get up most mornings over several months, sometimes 2 hours at night learning these putters.

I'd say it seems the pro Platinum finish is actually incredibly solid.

In my opinion, feel wise the pro Platinum is most definitely softer all across the face. The feel of the carbon steel is softer and the sound is a little bit more muted. It may end up being my favorite.

The studio stainless is such a good looking putter and I will keep it Forever. The only one piece of solid 303 stainless steel putter with no extra inserts screws or screw in weights on the sole that Scotty ever made and ever will make off the rack.

To me, the studio stainless is a great training putter as it has the smallest sweet spot of any blade putter I've ever hit by far. And that sweet spot is not exactly where the alignment line is... it's slightly to the heel side as I've now confirmed what I've always heard Brad Faxon and tiger say. That's why you'll notice on Tiger's model which contains a single Dot on the top slightly to the heel side of where the alignment Aid would traditionally be.

The Scotty Cameron Studio stainless is such a pure feeling putter when you hit that sweet spot. it's unlike anything I've ever felt. Again, it's a tiny, tiny sweet spot but so pure and it trains you so well.

The studio stainless is also weighted so damn perfectly I know when I hit that sweet spot the ball is going in the hole. These anser style putters are very similar to old bladed irons that feel like hell when you miss The Sweet Spot. but if you can consistently hit it, you will never want to putt with anything else.

The pro Platinum is softer across the face and has a bigger sweet spot which feels buttery but not quite as pure as the studio stainless when struck in The Sweet Spot.

Both Putters came in good condition. One small nick near the face but that's just a little bit of character. to make them look even better I used a few of my go-to items I will list below for cleaning:

*Semi Chrome or flitz polishing paste

*Renaissance micro crystalline wax and protectant made for Great Britain National Historic Museum Association.

*303 Aerospace rubber protectant juvenator for the rubber Studio design grip, great stuff

I'm a big Knife Guy...folding knives, the brand "kpl" knife pivot Lube is my first and only choice.

*Kpl knife shield for the carbon steel Pro Platinum to clean and add a layer of film as rust protectant preventative the stuff is amazing. gets up any residue or sticky film and cleans Down in all the paint fill.

*Kpl camellia oil made specifically for carbon steel blade on knives

*Soft Chris Reeve polishing cloth

*Windex or rubbing alcohol

*Q-Tips

*Toothbrush (not your wife's)

My pro platinum Mid Sur is in fantastic shape for being 20 years old.

Yes, the head looks great! It's almost 25 years old.

I noticed quickly upon close examination of mine that it's a brownish mustard yellow with a touch of Shimmer paint fill on the word Cameron on the back of the neck and Titleist on the front of the neck where I had originally thought the paint was faded white.

WJ13, gets the hearts because that is a labor of love thing right there.

Still miss my Studio Stainless I sold a few years ago. Just roll a couple NP2's now and they are lifers.

Thx G-Wedge! A labor of love indeed.

Lifers!

I hope to be gaming one of these two traditional Cameron's for as long as I can.

They just don't make the one- piece construction like they used to! Tiger never gave his old NP2 up for a reason. Love the stepped shafts as well...

As Tiger said in an interview once referring to a Very young Charlie Woods back then and I quote... "Charlie can touch anything in the house including all my trophies and golf equipment. I've cut an old back-up Putter down for him and he can experiment with anything except these two putters referring to his original Newport 2 from 1999 with the cherry bombs and an almost identical backup... as he pointed to his putter he said "These Two Are Daddy Only!"

I noticed quickly upon close examination of mine that it's a brownish mustard yellow with a touch of light Shimmer paint fill on the word Cameron on the back of the neck and Titleist on the front of the neck where I had originally thought the paint was faded white. it's the intended color eh?

Do you prefer the mid-sur over Newport Style. The exaggerated neck is not my style though I did still sink putts with the one I tried.

I’ve only had it about a year. I mainly like the mid sur over the Newport for the extra head weight, but I do prefer the longer neck.

Mine doesn’t have anything on the front of the neck

Well, just put this back in the bag last year. Back story is this was not my gamer since 2010 ish. I went left hand low about two years ago with my SC Golo7. Was in a putting slump and decide to start practicing   at home with my Pro Platinum. My logic was it is less forgiving (smaller sweet spot),  I was really liking it at home. One day I reach for my putter to warm up before a round when I realize I brought the wrong putter to the course. Long story short, I putted lights out with the PP and its been in the bag ever since. Loving it!

Ha! Classic always wins.

IMO your thought process was spot on using the Newport style putter to practice building perfect contact. It has a much smaller sweet spot than modern putters. If you get good with an old Scotty Newport/2, you can putt with anything...

Ever Notice the only drill tiger does every single time he steps on the putting green?..The 2 tee drill.

2 tees only a few millimeters away from the toe and heel of his GSS Newport. He Alternates using right hand only, and two hands sinking dozens of 8 foot putts back to back.

The tees are to make sure he contacts The Sweet Spot. Tiger's quoted as saying "The most important part of putting is hitting the same spot of the putter face every single strike with repetition! It's the only way you'll ever be able to control your speed and distance."

Kind of embarrassed by the condition of my Scotty. I let my daughter use it some time ago and she dinged it up 🤬 (lesson learned).

So, this putter feels sublime. One reason I’m  putting better is due to the toe hang. It’s 45 degrees and it matches up with my stroke.

Also, either I’m hitting the sweet spot more or it must be more forgiving than I give it credit for. I am more cognizant when I address the ball and focus on the strike point. I guess perception breeds confidence.

First time I remember hitting a Scotty was a Mid Slant Pro Platinum Newport from a long time ago, so I’m excited to finally one of my own. Pretty good condition for the cost of it ($230). Most likely going to BOS to get the Oil Can finish.

I wish the shaft still had the original band. There’s also a little rust on the shaft at hosel entry so I can’t be too sad as the refinish will just making gaming it pretty sweet.

I agree, I had a studio stainless but sold it as it was way too inconsistent for me. But also found the sweet spot was more heel side. It messed with how I line up my putts. Also it was a 2.5 model so the flow neck may not have suited by stroke.

I recently got a Mil-Spec and could not be happier. Cant beat the carbon steel feel. Although it does feel different than my Newport Classic and Circa 62.

I think the Mil-Spec is that perfect blend of carbon steel that you can use with minimal care on the course for damage due to fertilizer.

Wonderful Putters with a buttery feel in The Sweet Spot. Best Putters he ever made by miles. Because at that time they still had feel *with feedback* before Milling got so deep and sole weights inserted giving you a giant sweet spot that lacked precision and feedback imo.

I've now found the Studio Stainless & Pro Platinum NP/ NP 2 are by far my favorite putters Scotty ever made.

I had a 340g Studio Stainless that I sold and instantly regretted it so I found another one that will never leave my possession. It was rough but Continental got it looking pretty much brand new. I've owned a few Mil-Specs, a 340g and a 350g that I sold and made an absolute killing vs what I paid for them. I regret selling those but not as much. I have an Art of Putting Newport on the way that I plan to get refinished and hold onto, decent condition carbon steel Cameron's are becoming super rare (for under $500, anyway) so I saw one at a good price and scooped it up. I love them all but the Studio Stainless is probably my favorite.

I just purchased a carbon steel Newport. Pretty good shape. Going to have it refinished at some point. No sight lines.

I currently have a Newport black mist no alignment markings.

I regret selling an original trillium Newport. Mil spec. I had two Stainless studio Newports stolen. I'm always looking. If I see Newports without site lines under $500 it's hard not to buy.

Yes, The Studio Stainless will always be a winner! It just feels right. Well balanced. Would have a tough time ever leaving my Bag unless I found a Circle T, no sole weights, 340g/350g.

Pro Platinum & Studio Stainless approximately late 90s early 2000s were the Pinnacle of Cameron's putter making. He made some damn good ones before that- Oil cans, Classics, Teryllium, etc.

The Studio Stainless has the perfect combination of feedback vs feel to me which all new high MOI Putters seem to lack. To me Studio Stainless produces More feedback than other Cameron Putters, primarily contributed to the VERY shallow Milling.

The Studio Stainless is also one of the Harshest feeling Cameron Putters on poor contact hence, the "feedback". I hated it at first! Despised it. Felt like I was hitting rocks, as I had not yet studied the putting stroke and trained my muscles to routinely find the center of the putter face. I can thank Mr. Woods for sending me on that Journey.

Contrarily, with proper contact finding The Sweet Spot, you will find The Studio Stainless as "Pure" & "Flush" as it gets. The Pro Platinum is somewhat similar in both aspects, less flush/pure, more solid.

I'm playing a 34 3/8" 340G with the Original Studio Design Grip. I Own many, one is getting ready to go to the custom shop to have a Site Dot and no cord grip added. Here are a few pictures to break up the monotony of all the words.

He made some damn good ones & shapes before that- Oil cans, Classics, Teryllium, etc. Everything after the Studio Stainless began a downhill descent in my opinion. Although not an insert guy, I would say the "studio style" still had that originality, so perhaps after that model.

Speaking of the classic one, the Studio Stainless is modeled after it. Scotty decided it was time to try his luck w/ a more durable but still soft head material. 303 SS in the Classic NP/NP2 shape.

The Studio Stainless has the perfect combination of feedback vs feel to me which all new high MOI Putters seem to lack. It Produces More feedback than other Cameron Putters, which has a lot to do with the VERY shallow Milling. The Cameron enthusiast in me is excited to try the new Super Select built to my specs, but know it will fall short.

Contrarily, with proper contact finding The Sweet Spot, you will find The Studio Stainless as "Pure" & "Buttery" as it gets. The original Teryllium / Tel 3 is somewhat similar in both aspects.

I'm playing a 34.5" 340G with the traditional Studio Design Grip. I Own 5 studio stainless, one is getting ready to go to the custom shop to have a Site Dot and no cord grip added. Here are a few pictures to break up the monotony of all the words.

Here's mine, it was ROUGH but the guys from Continental did an amazing job cleaning it up without butchering it or losing much weight. Fit with a flat black KBS CT Tour and a black Studio Design grip, the paintfill is white and translucent blue (even though it kinda looks black in the picture.) If you guys ever see this on BST I'm gonna need someone to do a wellness check because something in my life has gone horribly wrong.

Was going to ask you to post a picture. Dig it! If it ever shows up for sale.... we'll know it was stolen, eh?

Is it still playing 34" ?

The mil spec gets more love but the 340 and 350g studio stainless is better IMO. I think it’s the best non circle T Scotty you can get.

Agree.

Back in the day, The Pro Platinum & Studio Stainless were VERY close to Circle T's.

These days there's much more discrepancy with different Milling styles, necks, shapes, graphics. "Ain't nobody on tour playing an OTR Scotty" it's a quote I read recently- very true. But back in the day if you were playing an Off The Rack Pro Platinum or Studio Stainless, you were close to a Circle T...

Check this picture out of exactly that.

Justin Thomas's Circle T from when he was in junior high School. I believe this was taken first of the 2023 year at Kapalua in January. Apparently he loves it, it comes to every tournament with him & he uses it on trips with the boys or practice rounds.

Unfortunately, I think he's gone back to the X5.5 (*great putter too).

Early in hand photos of the new GT2 models t the truck.  As soon as they show up on the range in player's bags we'll get some better from the top photos and hopefully some comparison photos against the last model.
