We Ko Pa - Arizona

Recommended Posts

Hey all - heading to the Scottsdale area in a couple weeks and am able to play one round. I chose We Ko Pa - hopefully I made a good choice. The only course I've played in the area is Troon North and I can't remember if it was Pinnacle or Monument - I think it was Monument.

Anyways, for those who are familiar with the Scottsdale area - did I make the right choice in course for one round? If not, which would you choose?

Also, can I walk We Ko Pa or is a cart recommended?

Thank you!

Wekopa Saguaro is #1 - so yes, good choice.  But Cholla is good too.  Neither are an easy walk.  Cholla is not good to walk because of some distances btw holes.  Saguaro is doable, but generally not good to keep POP.

Got it. Thanks @puttnforthe8. I am playing Saguaro and looks like I'll leave my walking shoes at home. Good insight.

... There are more dramatic views than WeKoPa Saguaro but sitting in a valley completely surrounded by mountains in the distance with virtually no homes or buildings in view it is a pretty amazing experience and my idea of what desert golf should look like. The course is very nice as well so you picked a win-win.

Looks like there is a warming weather trend starting late next week - I really hope that persists. I could use some warm weather golf right now.

I've walked both.  Cholla has some distance between holes, but not too bad.  Saguaro has very little distance between holes, but holes 14-18 are pretty difficult for the end of round - especially going up the last hill on 18.  I have never had POP issues with walking, as long as you can walk at a decent pace.

I've walked Saguaro with no issues and I'm not the fastest/most athletic walker. We-Ko-Pa itself pitches Saguaro as a walker-friendly course. Unless you are walking in one of the first couple groups of the day with people in carts who are trying to race through, it's fine for walking.

Personally I wouldn't walk Cholla. If you put a gun to my head and made me do it, I could do it, but it isn't what I consider to be an enjoyable walk and I am not one of those "militant walkers."

If someone ever puts a gun to my head I sure hope it's to make me walk 18 holes of golf.  🙂

Sagauro was designed to be walking friendly. I used to walk it all the time, now I'm just lazy.  It's designed by Coore/Crenshaw and one their focuses is walking friendly.  Lots of tee boxes sitting right next to the previous green.

The final few holes are a bit of bear to walk due to undulation.  But overall, it's a very walkable course.
