Macgregor May be Back

Was looking on FB on Forged Club appreciation and it seems Mac is back. They are owned by a company out west. I went on the website and seems they are currently making some CBs and Hybrid type things and offer some bags. What got my and other folks interest is they are saying that the famed winged MTs will be available in Feburary. From what I have seen the backs look like the famed 51 thru 54 Wingbacks. Ian Woonsan is supposedly currently playing a set and the one WITB pic I saw the soles appear to be more rounded like modern TM clubs. Does amyone have more info?

I thought I saw someone say (on bookface) that they (the Winged MT set) might be hollow clubheads?  (edit, looks like a small port in the toe side of the clubhead in the pic below)

 

Still, pretty cool.  Sounds like someone wants to take them DTC, which cuts some of the added cost out of the cycle.

That’s exciting news! I always have gravitated towards Mac’s and when I think vintage I think of those 1950’s wingback Colokrom’s. Have an 80’s set and will make room for a 50’s set yet. Be awesome having all 3 generations, every few years there’s that dreaded new club itch hmmm………..

Also even though the purists may disagree if they could pull off a hollow body forged face it would click every box for me. Just payed off the Christmas credit card.

Some 300cc drivers with a faux wood finish in Titanium setup like a mini-driver with throwback designs would be a cool niche item.  Doubt they have the R&D for it though.

Honestly I may have mixed reaction if they are hollow faced and silly putty filled. Not because I am a elite purist or anything like that but because any hollow faced Iron I have hit so far has absolutely no feel for me. Feel is about 85% of my game. I suspected it may be the case because I saw those pics of the ones in Ian Woosans bag and the soles did look like a modern sole rounded and thick andfor me that is a hall mark of hollow faced construction.

Recent Macgregor golf searches on eBay have been yielding a lot of results for new bags and lower end irons.   I figured it was from European or Japanese markets as I know Macgregor never fully went away overseas.

 

I’d love to see some vintage Mac designs with modern tech.   The idea of a winged back MT style club that is a hollow or filled distance iron is intriguing.  I look forward to seeing the specs and more pics.

Not a huge fan of the goo/hollow irons, but I love the idea of the older MacGregor design coming back. Would love to see a pure blade but there might not actually be a market for it...

For those who don't know, both the RAM and Spalding names are being used again as well.

I've gone on a kick of finding cheap(ish) set of older forged heads and building up sets for myself.  I've gone a little "wild" and am often pairing them up with lighter weight/flex graphite shafts, as it allows me to actually get a smaller-headed MB or CB style iron up in the air.  One of the recent sets I've built is a combo of Pro-C MB and CBs.  And I just shafted a Mac V-Foil M5K putter, and have been playing it over the past week.

 

So I'm always down for some new MacGregor equipment!

These interest me also. Until the end of last season I’ve resisted putter swapping forever. Might be the only good thing I’ve ever done in golf anyways. Worried I’ve opened Pandora’s box now so maybe room for one more mallet for when my Newport needs a timeout.

Good putters I have 3 of them--- 2 are center shafted like yours and one is heel shafted--- I am not really a mallet man but I do use them from time to time and I love the design

Another trick on those Pro M or muscleback style heads is to soft tip a lighter steel shaft and add a little lead tape low on the muscle. The lighter the steel shaft the more tape you can add. I have my VIPs with the Apex shafts set up like that. The guys I play with cannot figure out how I hit my short irons so high as high as they do their moderns and I hit the stinger with the long irons. If I have to hit a long high shot that is what the 7 & 9 woods are for.

I am in the early stages of possibably experimenting with putting a set of senior recoils in one of my sets of Muirfields

@BIG STU thanks for sharing... i had seen a photo of the Woosnam Macgregor irons within the past week... but now can't find the tweet!

I think about those Pro-M blades even now. The first blades I ever played and I still regret not buying multiple sets. I'd play those now over any current blade out there.

I think the correct term used on Facebook was “hollow bodied cheat sticks”.

 

Hollow bodies in the 3-5 irons would be nice with solid forgings 6-GW even nicer…and traditional-ish lofts please!!!
