I feel the same way.  My “modern” irons are Edel Single length and are hollow bodied.  I like then alot, but I have no desire to own another set of hollow bodied irons.  MacGregor teased us with a classic big block car and gave us a POS EV.  Lame.

All they have done is make irons for the masses that no “masses” will buy and alienate the people that love MacGregor for what they were

known for, high quality forged irons.

i hate to say it, but these heads will be available on Ebay in 18 months.

??? who mentioned "MacGregor" ???

I’m poking fun @deejaidThe idea that MacGregor is an actual entity that we’d hear back from.  Isn’t it essentially a group who owns the name and production is in a place like China and the name is just slapped on?  Far cry from the real MacGregor IMO.

While this company is called MacGregor golf, many feel that is all this venture has in common as the original company.  Figuratively this may be true in terms of heritage, this venture may continue some of the traditions established by the original MacGregor.  However, the history, documentation, pedigree was not retained but the passion may be there.  Hard to say.  To me this looks like a company capitalizing on an esteemed name in golfing lore pushing current day equipment that only has a connection with badging and marketing than design tradition.  This venture certainly isn't a classic club topic but another new club topic.  Maybe this is part of my cynicism because of my passion for MacGregor persimmon woods and the rich heritage the original MacGregor company had and the appearance of some business people capitalizing on a brand name.  I hope I am wrong but .....

Exactly.  Much better than how I said it.

I’m trying to think of a comparison.

Up here in Milwaukee the PBR brewery is a historical building that has nothing to do with PBR.  That name is owned by a company based out of LA and the beer is brewed all over the country.

It is a fact that 'tradition' helps to sell product; it's an established marketing ploy. Doesn't matter if it's beer, cars or in this instance golf clubs.

My Sounder clubs have had their name hijacked by a boutique company selling golfing haberdashery. Makers of replica hickories rely on selling product by referencing makers of yore. Most of the Scottish cleekmakers had their cleekmarks hijacked by American club makers, not the least MacGregor. And lets not forget MacGregor even changed the spelling of their name to make it sound more 'Scottish', which helped to sell more clubs back in the day.

Jimbo---- I read the article just now and are still on the fence. Hoping I can get in on the test since over there I am considered the resident Macgregor man. I will say this and do not mean to offend. IF I were to buy a modern set I might go there over PXG or Ping or any other modern hollow irons because after all they are Macgregor.

Stu, there may be other MacGregor aficionados on here, but no one I know uses them and understands them the way you do. Being a collector is one thing, being a vintage player is another. It’s sort of like a guy that has every kind of tool but rarely uses them. The craftsman uses the tools.

I have this discussion frequently with some of our collectors in the GHSC. Hanging a playable club on a wall just doesn’t seem right to me. If I restore a club, it will be used.

There's bad and good to the revival of MacGregor.

I had THE best fitting ever by MacGregor back in early 2k.  I was able to pick all aspects of each club head like their touring pros, it was remarkable.  I flew home and soon after my beautiful butter knife blades, one 2 iron MB blade, an extra CB 2i, and 3-LW set of beautiful blades arrived.  Played them for a while, still have them in storage.  To me, MacGregor is like original Snake owned by Ernie V, who made still THE BEST wedges for the tour.  I was fortunate to get 4 sets, played them until 2016.

Whoever buys the rights isn't likely to match what those two companies brought to market.  Probably like when Golfsmith bought Snake Eyes out of BK, then proceeded to make yuk.  I hope I am wrong but...

As SOP for us again we share the same opinion. I am trying to be upbeat and positive on this but with the soul and heart of a vintage Macgregor man it is hard for me to do

Over there, you're largely a group of one.  Here, you're still Mr MacGregor, but other members of Clan MacGregor are also around.  😀

Such as it seems to me  <shrug>

Ugh the marketing “decidedly retro.” Every time I look at these irons I dislike them more and think they couldn’t be further away from a real MacGregor.  Aside from the wing back nothing about these reminds me of the 50s MTs or even the 80s remakes.

I think in some ways my 3 year journey into golf with the self imposed limitation of vintage only has made me happily ignorant.  I see a screw in the toe and I’ve never seen that before but I’m realizing that must be some sort of weight system?

I cannot see me buying something like this which merely is recycling the MacGregor name. Since there are plenty of the originals around that can be had for a small fraction of the insane prices of modern equipment, I will stick to the oldies. Besides, the scavenger hunt in finding them is so much fun.
