Extreme inside to out

Recommended Posts

I got on a machine yesterday and my numbers were extreme inside to out.  The were somewhere around an average of 6R.  Obviously the club was behind me causing clanky misses both ways.  Any ideas to fix this other than trying to take out my left thigh with the butt of the club on the downswing?  I don't have a video, sorry.

I'm no expert, but it likely means you're not keeping the club on plane during your takeaway. Neutralize your path during the first half of the swing and the downswing will be more neutral as well.

6 degrees isn't extreme. I've been trying to get down to 1-4 degrees. What helped the most was working on getting rid of some early extension. That mellowed out the flip and the double digit in to out path. I'm averaging more like 5-6 in to out now and it's remarkably better and way fewer misses left.

Similar story here. Been working down from my double digit path too.

It is 6R with a stall flip move.  It loosely mimics a tennis player trying to hit a winning topspin shot down the line.   A basic dumpster fire at this point.

The stall flip move is the issue. The path is just a number. It’s not helpful to think in terms of the path number, and in of itself 6R isn’t a major problem. The best iron play of my life was when I was 5-6R with irons. My miss was a small block and rarely ever over-hooked.

A near zero swing path does nothing to guarantee solid contact, low point or a repeatable face angle relative to path and target. There are plenty of high and mid handicaps with very neutral paths with their irons. It’s just a number.

The other issue is the “pieces to change the swing path” school of thought. Can really go down a bad road that line of thinking.

For example, many who have a swing path of 12 degrees to the right would never believe that they actually need some more draw biased pieces in their swing. Their excessive paths to the right are a result of their bodies trying to prevent an over the top move or excessively leftward path.

I was a double digit in-out path guy not long ago and made it my focus for the better part of the last two years. At the beginning I was anywhere from -8 to -13 (I’m a lefty) club path numbers. Game was inconsistent at times and I decided to make some serious changes. I’m now down to a -2 average with a 7 iron. I’ll share the big components that helped me get there.

1. Takeaway. I yanked the club inside right from the get go and brought the club back below the plane. From there I would still lay the club off and attack the ball from even further inside. Using video aid and alignment sticks I was able to get my takeaway and position at the top more on plane. This brought my path numbers into the -5 to -7 range.

2. Setup/alignment. From the years of playing a slinging hook I liked to call a draw my set up had become very closed to target in both my feet and shoulders. My grip was also on the stronger side. I worked to get my setup much more neutral in all aspects. This had a marginal effect on my path but it did help me become more comfortable with my start lines.

3. Lower body turn. The last thing that really helped I learned through some lessons I took. I needed to rotate my lower half more efficiently in the down swing. By clearing my hips and “getting them out of the way” I was able to greatly effect my path. If I really focus on that I actually start to see path numbers slightly from the outside. (1 to -1). I used this feel as a drill and that really helped. Now is I take a normal swing with these changes I average about -2 club path. Which is really where I want to be.

The reasons you come from the inside may be drastically different than the reasons I did, so your best bet if you really want to know is to find an instructor to help you. However, this has been my journey.

That’s why you are so inside to out. Probably have the hips working incorrectly and have a steep shaft in transition so you have to shallow and do so by titling

Hips definitely working incorrectly.  They don't really rotate and open up.  Sometimes my left hip gets really sore.  I don't think the shaft ever gets steep though.  It drops under the plane in transition and gets on my elbow line.

Go to the range and place a shipping box just outside the ball.  See if your feel can figure it out

I was warming up the other morning and decided to put a PJ's coffee cup outside of my ball.  Two swings later there was a coffee cup flying across the range.  😁

  • 2 weeks later...

It's funny, i got my first lesson in years a couple of months back and was 7* in to out with a 7 iron. The teacher said the preferred path nowadays is within 3* either way as getting too much outside that makes it hard to be consistent. also said only one guy he knows of is outside it on the Australian tour and he sits at 6* playing a hold off fade but has enormous power.

My whole golfing life i have not rotated very well and had a very vertical follow thru....never around my left shoulder properly. I actually have a very very short swing and both hips and shoulders pretty much align with the target at impact.

So he told me what he needed was referred to spinning (definitely Mike Adams stuff and he did measure me up the Adams way.....i was side under grip and center post).  Man was it tough to straighten that path out. I think i got two sots to 3* and one was actually holed which was sorta funny. After a few weeks i started bombing straight drives by actually concentrating on a good left shoulder turn on the way back and really ripping that left shoulder back around on the forward swing. Had my best driving day for 12 or so years but weeks later it's dried up unfortunately and i am still grinding. Might do a follow up and hit driver as well.

Take this for what it's worth. I know next to nothing about the golf swing, but I've been stuck and fighting 6*-8* in to out lately myself, and here's what seems to be working for me (at least, it worked for me today):

(1) On the backswing, feeling like my left arm (for a righty) is sliding up my chest.

(2) Following through feeling like I am exiting left, with my left hip going back (away from the ball) and shoulder turning down and left.

FWIW, got those feels from the following vids:

Left arm slides up the chest.

shoulder down and left after contact

club exits left
