Wood Brothers Driver

Recommended Posts

Kind of an odd request but I’d love to pickup one of these as a gamer. All I am seeing on eBay is collector’s level ones and restoration.

Anywhere I could find a scuffed up , beat up one if I wasn’t looking to spend much ? If it was something that needed repair to be usable I am a cabinetmaker so could do what was needed.

Beat up ones are hard to come by but they do come up infrequently.  The beat up ones still run $200-250.

The recent Golf magazine feature on Wood Bros describes Jackie Burke Jr’s inspiration for creating the great Wood Bros persimmon clubs.

Here is a Texan built for Mr Burke by Dave Wood.

Do you think We could get a set of calipers hooked on the depth of that face of Suttons and pick of the face profile of Burkes?

Mine are definitely players rather than collectibles. One even has a bit of a sky mark on the top of the insert (it wasn't me! It was like that when I bought it...which probably explains why I got it for less that $100).

You could look for a Corker or Kool Kat, which are usually a bit cheaper. The first Wood Bros I got was a Corker (first pic), and it's a lot of fun to play.

Coletrain, Dave made the club for Mr. Burke, but he rejected it saying it sat too square and he decided he wanted on with a little more loft and a tad closed so he could hit a good draw. This was around 1993-94. Dave made him another one which he accepted and kept. When I got the club it was mint, really never played....

Based on the answer I'm about to give, that's an extremely perspicacious question.

It has a Honma Boron SP-VIO shaft, either S-1 or S-2 (the number is missing from the label). I don't think Honma ever sold their shafts separately, so I assume it's been reshafted at some point, with the owner taking the shaft from a Honma driver.

I was in the market for a Wood Bros (who isn't?), but the shaft was a nice bonus as I have it in a Honma driver and like it.

Here's the crown, and skirt.

This thread is amazing!  Surprised I hadn't seen it before.

Question:  Has anyone seen that "extended insert" (as I'd describe it) on the face-side sole of the club before?  I used to be a persimmon fan -- had at least a dozen different ones from the late 80s to early 90s and used them well into the metal age -- and have never seen that before on any other club.  I assume it's for purely practical reasons, to protect the leading edge from wear?

LeftyMac

It turns out, Wood Bros did make a very limited number of left handed drivers.

It isn’t widely known, but when Phil Mickelson won the PGA Tour Phoenix Open, as an amateur,  he was playing a lefty Texan delivered to him by Dave Wood, who drove to Phoenix from Houston to get it there in time for the tournament.

Here are 2 of each - Texans, Corkers, and Kool Cats.

brings back memories!  I loved my cool cat in the early 90’s.  It was corked and just went for miles!!
