[Texsport]

One of a group of 6 Espana clubs commissioned by Seve. All with the same specs as his Mona Lisa, but finished differently.

The clubs were delivered to Seve at his home in Spain.

The recent Golf magazine feature on Wood Bros describes Jackie Burke Jr’s inspiration for creating the great Wood Bros persimmon clubs. 
 

Here is a Texan built for Mr Burke by Dave Wood.

It turns out, Wood Bros did make a very limited number of left handed drivers.

It isn’t widely known, but when Phil Mickelson won the PGA Tour Phoenix Open, as an amateur,  he was playing a lefty Texan delivered to him by Dave Wood, who drove to Phoenix from Houston to get it there in time for the tournament. 
 

Here are 2 of each - Texans, Corkers, and Kool Cats.

Here is a special order Wood Bros Kool Cat which Dave Wood created for an Augusta National GC member. 
 

Special permission to use the ANGC logo was required.

 

The club sports a heavier than standard Stainless Steel sole plate for a built-in higher launch angle, and an Augusta green graphite shaft.

Another driver built for Seve Ballesteros with a brass sole plate and Seve’s favored EOM60 aluminum bullseye insert. The bullseye is actually a large aluminum screw that inserts deep into the head.

You can find used Texans come up on eBay every few months.     Snag one!

Here’s one of the 1st 3 Texan prototypes, from late 1983. The Texan was announced in 1984.

I believe that the starting points for the 3 first Wood Bros drivers were:

 

Texan - Mac M85

Corker - Mac 693

All American - low profile, easy launching club designed for Sec of State George Schultz, formally Chairman of Houston-based Bectel Corp.

 

All 3 evolved as custom specs were available to Tour pros and special order customers. Consequently, you will see examples of each model with varying face depths, lofts, and facings.

Strange to see "Duro Con Aceite (oil hardened?)" engraved on the Spain soleplate. I wonder if that was Seve's idea or Dave Wood's own?

Thanks for posting those.  According to Dave the lefties are "ultra rare" and were made for a few pros and a couple of college players.  All the lefties were handmade by Dave as evidently they were a little tricky to shape.  I read somewhere that Dave made 5 of them for Phil, not sure if that is correct or not.  What shafts are in the Texans?  My original is identical to the one of yours on the left.  Same screw placement, font used on the loft etc.  Suggests perhaps they were made at the same time.  Love the Kool Cats as well, one of those is on my wish list.

I was at the range today hitting 3 different drivers. 2 Wood Bros Texans and a few shots with my Tom Kite 693 gamer.  I think I hit this Texan the best, although Kite's 693 is amazing as well. 

 

This is the Texan Golf magazine wrote about this past April, which Dave Wood called "Christine"- Langer's 1st Texan.

So odd that they put someone else's domain name on a club.
They also owned "www.wbgolf.com" - both sites can be viewed using the Wayback machine.

Remember these persimmons are from the 80’s ……there wasn’t much of an internet 35 years ago!

Wood Bros drivers said "Texas Golf Co." on the sole plate which was its official company name.  One of the tour guy very early on would call the brothers "Wood Bros", which is what most people think the company name was.
