Next ball to try

Recommended Posts

Hello,

Just after some recommendations of balls to try really. I've been playing supersofts and whilst I like the feel I think my driver distance has suffered a bit falling below 200yds.

I've never been a big hitter but 210-215 would be the norm. I'm a 16 index but I'd clas my swing speed as the upper end of slow. Hit a 7 iron around 150yds total.

I'm in the UK so stuff I can get here. I have lessons etc and looking to improve so want to maximise distance but also have some green side control would be handy.

If you need more info let me know and thanks for the help.

The Bridgestone B RXS or RX would be my first recommendation for a softer tour style ball.

Srixon QStar or QStar Tour may be a good step up also. These may still be the AD333 in the UK. I’ve read that they were once the number one selling ball in the UK for a while. They are good performers.

Yeah we have ad333, one of the biggest sellers, used to have ad333 tour which is now the q star tour.

I really liked the AD333 when I returned to golf in ‘04 or ‘05. Played them then the the “tour” for a couple of years. Then people started telling me with my swing speed I should be playing pro V’s or other “tour” balls and the quest began. LOL

Thanks for the replies so far, any love for the Kirkland balls? I know from MGS testing they are quite spinny, but for someone who doesn't produce a lot of spin I didn't know if it might normalise them? Don't know if that makes sense.

I'm not averse to a two piece ball though if that's something that would work.

At that price, why not try the Ksig. I am not really into too much or too little spin. I go with what feels best and a decent value.

Chrome soft red box if you are a low ball hitter

avx if ur a high ball hitter

bridgestone RX is another option, but won’t have the greenside control of the other two. Bridgestone rxs a forth option, but will lack distance vs RX.

A firmer ball will give you more distance. The softer ball for lower swing speed myth has been debunked by many independent tests. Depending on your short game preference, I would look at Callaway Warbird, Srixon AD333, or Titleist Velocity to name a few.

How about if I want a bit more spin, I'm guessing these are going to be quite low spin.

Or is it a case of if I don't generate a lot of spin on iron shots then it's going to be similar levels whether I use a spinny ball or not.

If you want more spin, you can go to a urethane cover ball like Pro V1X, Callaway CSX, Bridgestone Tour B X. I would recommend trying a firmer non urethane covered ball like those I suggested and a urethane covered firmer ball and see which works for you best. The only area you will notice a difference in performance will be in the short game. With your irons, if you are a lower spin player (like myself) you need to have a higher apex to help stop the ball. Both types of balls should help you hit the ball higher, but do it in different ways. The non urethane cover ball will launch higher off the club face since the firmer cover will “slide” up the face. The urethane cover will launch lower because the grooves will “grip” the ball so it launches lower. However, due to the added spin from the friction it will have more lift in the flight. If you can find a store that sells sleeves of balls, try each one and see which you prefer.

Yeah that makes sense, I think my pro shop sells sleeves of 3 of quite a few so just need to decide which two piece and which 3 piece to try out. There's been quite a few suggested.

I have been looking for a cheap alt ball....I bought a dozen cut grey.  I have been playing the vice pro, which I really like.  The cut grey is more firm than the vice pro.  It lets you know if you didn't hit a good shot.... But when you find the sweet spot, the cut grey is a rocket.  I read reviews of ppl saying the cover of the cut balls is not durable...I had no issues.  In fact it is a tank compared to the vice pro... After a round with vice pro my ball has scuffs all over it.... The cut grey isn't going to stop as well as a pro v 1 but I was quite pleased with the performance of the cut grey....I will say the cut logo on the ball is ugly as sin but I just try not to look at it ; )

Not sure, but I think they have a softer ball. Srixon soft feel is on my short list.  You might wanna try the Wilson zip or Wilson elite 50.  You can get 2 dozen Wilson zip for $30 at Walmart.... Anyway, I'm going to play these cut balls until I lose all of them and then I'll have to make a decision to buy more or continue my search for the best cheap golf ball.

If you are a higher spin player, going to a less spinning ball may gain you distance. I've been playing the Callaway CS for years. Recently got some CS X LS and gained 10 yards on my drives. It spins a tad less so I gained yardage. They are fine around the greens and short game. Didn't notice much difference there.

Best cheap golf ball is the Ksig. Although, I do like the Soft Feel in yellow.

I have been a Bridgestone BX guy since 2019.

When fitted for a Titleist ball, I was told I'd need the Pro V1x.

On a whim I played a round last Saturday with the 2023 Titleist Pro V1.  Not the x.

I am now a 2023 Titleist Pro V1 guy.

Wow, what a ball.  Soft feel.  LONG off the driver.  Irons were one hop and stop.  Chipping was the same - great control.  Putting... smooth.

use any ball really, for a  swing that slow, it won't really matter. I'd focus more on your swing than the ball. watch some videos by Dr. Kwon on youtube, his drills are great. I'm showing a friend these drills, and we've gotten his SS from around 82 to 93mph the first time at the range. My swing has gone from around 109 to 120 with the drills, and that's with a knee that's recuperating from surgery. Try the Kirkland V3 balls that just came out, best bang for the buck ball there is.

  • 1 month later...

Yesterday I played 18 with my dad who is in his 70s, I just turned 50, for reference.  More reference, my driver carries about 250, 7i about 160 and I'm about a 13 HCP.

Played a ProV1.  Started off hot and was 2 over after 6.  Then the wheels fall off, triple, triple, triple.  Ugh.  I end up shooting 47-51-98.  I don't shoot 98.  Worst round of the year.  My issue, if the ball spun and strayed off the tee I was toast.  Could not recover and just chased bad shots.

Today I go out and play 18 alone.  Tired of losing balls I play a Wilson Zip.  Shot 44-43-87 and if a few putts had dropped I would have shaved about 4 strokes off that.

The Zip just did a better job holding its flight line for me.  The ball just went straighter, which was surprising because it was a very breezy day with a strong north wind.

Point is, there is no point.  Play what works.  The Zip worked for me today and I'm sticking with it until it doesn't work anymore.  That it is literally one of the cheapest balls you can buy is a bonus too.
