P770/P7MC combo?

Played with my buddy this morning who games this combo 4-7 P770 8-PW P7MC.  He absolutely loves them about 6 months in, I believe he had the MC's bent 1* strong to better mesh with the 770's

This is the setup I have. Only thing I'd change would be to have the 7 iron MC to give me a little more workability from that distance, but that's me being nit-picky.  The difference in feel is noticeable.  Overall it's a great combo set, and it has me thinking I might be playing combo sets from here on out.  Definitely get them fit for you if you can.

Funny to hear you say that.  I think the only thing my buddy wishes he did was go MC in the 7i as well.

I bought this combo a few months ago. My takeaway on it. I have been playing 4-P P7TW for past year or so and realized I'm not Scotty Scheffler lol. I went 4-6 P770 and 7-P 7MC. After a few rounds, I replaced the MC with the 7TW. I noticed hardly no difference in the 7MC and 7TW in the short irons and felt more comfortable over the ball with the P7TW. I absolutely love the P770 in the long irons though. Had them bent weak to match lofts. I wish I would have just bought the whole set in 770. I will be looking to sell the 7MC or hopefully trade them for the 770 in 7-P. Just my thoughts on it.

Hit both of these in a demo day a few weeks ago and surprised to hear that it's only taking 1* weak or strong to match these up. I figured the hollow construction of the 770 would necessitate maybe 1* strong in the MC and 1* weak in the 770.

Blown away with the performance of the 770 and the look of the blade. Thinking they may be my next set.

I started my set with a P7MC 4-PW, coming from a set of P790s. I am a good iron player, but not excellent by any means. After several months of play, I decided to swap out the 4-5i for a P770 4-5i and I've been really happy with that. I feel very comfortable with my accuracy and height on the MC 6 iron and equally comfortable moving to the more forgiving 770 in 5i. It also helped my gaps as 6/5/4 iron carry distances were bunched together on average. I did not tinker with lofts, but I am able to adjust my 770 distances by swinging easier or choking down on the club.

I've been thinking about doing this as well.  I have 790 4&5 iron bent 1.5* weak to match distance gaps with 770s, but wouldn't mind having P7MC for 8-PW or maybe just 9&PW as I hit the 770s a little high

Playing 4-6 in p770 and 7-p in p7mc. It’s my second season with them and really liking the overall playability of them. I’m coming from a combo set of titleist 714 cb/mb and the p770 in the long irons really help on those off days. I play a lot of flighted and controlled shots with my short irons and the mc’s play just as well as my old mb’s.

I tried combo’ing a P770 5-iron with 6-PW P7MC to start this season.

The more shots I hit with the P770 5-Iron, the more I fell in love with it. I then ordered a P770 6-iron and loved it just as much, and then realized that I wanted to reach into my bag and grab P770’s for every club.

The P7MC’s just didn’t feel as good as I thought they would for the type of club that they are, and I found the P770’s felt just as good, but I preferred the extra distance and forgiveness.

If I were to go back to combo’ing them, I would go 5-7 P770, and 8-PW P7MC, but I don’t really miss anything from the P7MC short irons and am really enjoying P770 5-PW. Just my experience.

I've also got a combo of 4-7 P770 and 8-PW P7MC (old versions). I chose to bend the P7MCs 1 degree strong as I struggle with a high ball flight. I hit my irons mostly just straight and don't really feel the need to shape shots that much. I could probably go for a full set of P770s just as well but I love the look of the P7MCs so much that I couldn't resist bagging them for the short end. Overall I'm really happy with what I've got and can easily recommend the same combo for others as well.

I have this combo and absolutely recommend it. I went with MMT 125's and these are the irons I benchmark all against now. The sound of the 4-6 is sort of ugly but the MMT seem to quell that a bit into acceptable especially with the results you get. Worth the money for sure. I am one who is known to buy and sell irons rather frequently and these are not in any danger, unless a set of TCB/x-Forged combo with MMT's is better.

I used the P series combo guide from TM and works great. - https://www.taylormadegolf.com/on/demandware.static/-/Sites-TMaG-Library/en_US/v1601625922263/TaylorMade/Product_Specs/P_Series_Combo_Guide.pdf

My brand new set is 2023 P770 4-6 iron and P7MC 7-PW (bent 1° strong). And I am an 11 handicap. I wanted to get this set because the P7MCs feel great and will still be great as I work hard on my ball striking and speed over the winter.

Sort of similar I've combo'ed a P770 3 iron with 4 - PW VR Pros (so P7-TWs with a swoosh on them). I had the P770 bent a degree weak to fit the gaps and remove some of the offset, same S400 as my VR Pros.

It fits the gap well, however I will admit I'm not finding it that much easier to hit than my VR Pro 4 iron. It's slightly easier to hit off a tee, but I find the VR Pro easier to keep straight, with the P770 wanting to go left more than I'm used to.

Sounds like there's quite a big market for the built in players iron combo set.....maybe TM needs to bring back their P760 line...

No reason to bring those back. If the 770 and MC are able to be combo'd you have more versatility to blend sets. The 760s will fit those who fit just test setup and it wasn't many when they were around.

Love the idea but wish they’d make the bag appeal easier to blend. I like how titleist and pxg make it easier to combo based on looks in addition to performance

Welp bag appeal is opposed to performance optimization. If we are truthful with ourselves across the board and spent time fitting clubs we would have a hodge podge set with more headcovers then you realize or chunky monkey variable irons at the top of the bag if you can't hybrid.

Regarding the 760s as already stated, its not a big market for this type of club. They were a great blended set but the nostalgia about them is misplaced since this is not a large segment of golfers for OEMs to make money from, when they came out they were not well liked for looks (the foreman grill grows on you :P) and you can nitpick details about them such as topline isn't as thin as a blade or some other clubs like T series.

Note: I have 760s and really like them, I also gamed the OG 770s, and have 770/790 blended set now as my main gamer set. Maybe TM was a few years early with the 760 cycle (it also came out when supply chain issues started) to  have a nice blended set like that where the 8-W are full 1025 forged but functionally if you are this category of player you DIY with the MC and770s.

Again if honest with ones self, does a 760 or 790 4i feel more confidence inspiring over the ball? Vast majority of golfers its the 790.

We have debated before is the P7MC a bit *too* blade like, bring back the 770 Gen 1 and the tungsten love, instead TM gives us the Gen2 770. Its just that: a WRX debate.

Finally, who needs new? Go find a clean 760 or 750/770s thats clean. WIth some patience they are out there, and all of them are 50% or more less expensive then new clubs.

Happy hunting OP.
