Need recommendation on irons that are workable

Jackal

Recommended Posts

My Son is looking for some new irons.

He has Mizuno MP 18 SC.

His game/ability  has improved over the last few years and he is looking for irons with the Mizuno feel, but be able to flight the ball and more workability.

He doesn't want a true blade or muscle back, but something a little forgiving for bad days when the game isn't going 100%.

Thanks in advance.

He has been looking at Titleist T100S & Mizuno Pro 223.

Pro 223 is a good one.  Apex TCB should also be on his list.

Sounds like is chasing good feeling irons, I would also recommend the Srixon ZX7 and Wilson Staff CB's. Both of these as well as the solid options from phizzy30 (above) would give a nice overall sized iron that should feel great and allow him to hit the shots he wants.

Consider the Sub70 659 CB or TC models.  They are quite buttery feeling with more forgiveness and very minimal offset.  And the price on them is phenomenal.

If he’s used to Mizuno and likes them the 223 is what you describe. The brand and the MP line has a certain look, feel, and flight characteristic that varies a bit but generally lines up. You go to another brand and it could be a huge adjustment, especially since you’re seeking advice from strangers.

Historically the MP line is pretty skinny, and that’s what he needs for workability, especially with modern balls. The game is so straight now.

Thanks for all the info.

There is a Titleist fitting coming up in 2 weeks.

This fitter only takes appointments, and is very serious, but good .

He is going to see what Titleist has to offer.

If they don't feel as good as his Mizuno's, we're going to go to Golf USA and see what they have in the Mizuno line.

Thanks again , and keep the suggestions coming.

Gotta go with T100 if your son decides to go Titleist.  Very workable and definitely more forgiving than a traditional MB.

I've been playing the 21' T100 for a little over a year, unfortunately they won't match the MP-18 SC's in feel.  The 23's are supposed to be slightly better but personally i've played the past two generations of T100 and they perform but have never felt as soft as 718AP2.

With Titleist, there's a normal decision that's made between performance of T100 or feel of the CB. Hopefully it's an easy decision for him.

These are 6 years old. We bought them new and the grooves are worn off of the 7 iron thru PW.

They are rusting on the faces.

Good deal.  The 7i on my set is worn a bit... I assume it was a demo set that used the 7i most of the time in the bay.

Maltby gives the MP18SC REALLY low scores for forgiveness, but for whatever reason they seem to fit my miss (heel side/low).

Like suggested, I bet the T100 or T150 would work well for your son.  I play 718 AP2's (predecessor to the T100) from time to time and they're definitely easier to hit than the MP18SC's, especially when you get to the 6i (that's when they start with the tungsten inserts).  Best of luck to you both.

Totally agreed about the SC's feeling better than the AP2's... and I'll regurgitate what I read on the webz that the T100's feel got worse.  Not bad, just not as good.

I think part of it is that the performance on mishits with the 100's is so good that I often associate a good shot with the firm feedback of one i just missed.  When they are middled, they feel good just not quite as good as the SC's.  I honestly haven't hit many if any irons that feel as good out of the middle as an MP18- SC.

We were talking to someone and they suggested the T100-S, but he doesn't need a strong lift, he has a lot of distance already.

Those Mizuno MP18SC irons that he plays now would be perfect for me if they had a weaker shaft.

I'll show him their post so he can look at the different suggestions.

Thanks everyone!!

Any golf club is “workable”. Curve or spin axis, is a club path/face angle relation. Have your son pick out something he likes the look and feel of.

Update!

My Son went to Golf USA in Fayetteville AR today, and they had a set of Mizuno JPX 923 Tour  with X-100 shafts.

He hit them fairly straight, and they checked him on a lie board.

They needed 2° of upright bend.

These were brand new .

Someone from the Blessings Golf course had bought them and didn't like them.

These were hit on the range mats , but never played.

We got them for $1000 total.

He played them today and can work these irons just like he needs .

Being  new to shot shaping, but able to flight them is fantastic.

My Son is 19,and 6'-3", 210 lbs .

He has a pretty powerful swing.

Thanks for all the advice.

I just wanted to let you know what he ended up with.
