P790 (2023) v Titleist T200 Irons

Wlaffey

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Going for a fitting tomorrow and the P790 and T200 are high on the list.

currently gaming the P790 (2019) with a KBS 120s shaft and really like them , just fancy an update.
Here is wet and wonderful Ireland so high spin is not a necessity.

wanted to see which of you guys have done a head to head with these two clubs and how did you fair?

Thanks in advance

I tested both and ended up with a t200/t150 combo set. Mostly t200…I wanted the added forgiveness and ball speed on toe strikes. Wasn’t close for me. For me, the titleist launched higher and had better dispersion. I also liked the look behind the ball more.

Curious where you did the split? I need toe help in irons as well. I think t200 has tungsten in toe up to 8 iron. So seems the 150s and 200s would be pretty close in forgiveness 9 through wedge.

Currently gaming T200/150 - T200 -5,6,7 and T150 8,9, P, G.  Debated between the new P790s and new new Titleist and chose Titleist because I was able to order the KBS Tour in R+ shaft as I am in between R and S.  Happy with my choice thus far although I will say my turf interaction is much better with the 150s and I don’t really notice much if any difference in forgiveness between the 150s and 200s.

The changes to the 2023 T200 are very small in terms of performance.  The sound is a little different, fwiw, as are the cosmetics, including a VERY slightly thinner top line.  The performance changes are just a couple of feet in peak height and a little steeper descent angle.  If I hadn’t seen the numbers on Trackman, I wouldn’t have been able to tell the differences in ball flight at all.

I hope that didn’t come across as in any way negative about the T200’s; they are GREAT irons in every respect.  I’ve used the 2021 version since they came out, and I’ve got a set of the new ones on order.  Honestly, I have no good reason to order the new ones in terms of the performance, and my fitting specs came out exactly the same.  But I DO like the cosmetics of the 2023 model, so…

I’ll also mention this: the Titleist fitter and I talked about some sort of a blended set, and I hit the T350 6 iron (6 is the longest iron I carry) as well as a T150 and T100 PW (I use a Vokey 50* for my gap wedge, and I’ve never been more confident of a club, or had one more versatile).  In both cases, the contact and ball flight weren’t as good as with the same clubs in the T200 set.  His question for me about the PW was whether or not I would be likely to use it around the green, as opposed to just full shots, and I don’t think I would.  So T200 straight thru.

I played the 2019 790's Loved them.. Started with Graphite shafts, but moved to Steel 105's.  My 7 iron with graphite went 175-180,  165 with steel shafts, but dispersion was better.     In 2021, went to T200 with 105's.    Actually hit the ball a bit higher, with same carry.   Got used to them, but play in a lot of wind.   Spent two hours on Titleist fitting last week and selected the t200's with SteelFiber 80 shafts.    Unbelievable the dispersion tightness for my swing, gettin a extra 5 yards of carry, etc.     Waiting for them to come in this week.

The new T200 are insanely good. I haven’t had the issue with the back cap that some people swear will happen to everyone. The tweaks to the irons from top to bottom are great, the gap wedge to 8 iron feel solid and the longer irons have a powerful snap. I get super consistent distances and compared to the 150’s way more consistent height shot after shot. I have a full set of T200, and a backup set of T200 long irons and T150 the rest of the way down and I just don’t play as well with the 150 set despite being the same shaft and specs. I thought I may decide to combo in beyond the 5-6 iron but I just don’t see the point. The T200 can handle knock downs and the like very well, super stopping power on stock shots. I came from the previous gen T100S after not liking the offset and short iron feel of the previous T200. Couldn’t be happier with current gen. May sell my 150 combo set and grab a 790 set as my backup as they seem basically interchangeable based on YouTube tests.

I just do not believe that there is much difference in performance of the current crop of hollow body, players distance irons (i530, T200, P790, Mizzy 245s) with shaft and sound/feel being the deciding factor. I have owned all four of them and settled on the shaft for me. All insanely good and make cavity back GI irons almost redundant IMHO...
