Jailbird Modification Question

I’m looking to cut down  my MH Jailbird from 39 to 36 inches because of my height.  It looks like the difference in Clark and Fowlers weight is ~5 grams for 1/2 inch in length based on my research…so I’ll be losing about 30 grams…if I use the Winn 15 inch counter balance grip versus the Super Stroke 17 inch I’d be adding about 35 grams…should I have to make any other changes?

It may work.  In the end it is subjective to your feels and swing.  There is no one and done formula.

To me you would have to add more weight to the head so it’s not so top heavy. I wonder since the JB already has weights, if heavier weights would be available at some point to play around with the feel.

It's already 380

I use CB a lot and they all range from 370-400

I also play a shorter CB like you, and they all feel fine to me.  Give it a shot first before ya mess around with anymore weight.

Dunno what the weights are in the JB, but they are replaceable, so hopefully Callaway has some heavier ones?

I went from 38 to 36 and used the Winn 15. I like it feel and balance better.

Has anyone who cut one down been able to save the SS grip?  Seems like it would be a hard one to save given the length.

I plan on cutting my JB 380 White Hot down to 36” and use a Zenergy Tour 2.0 with a 50g counter core weight in the butt end of the grip.  
 

I use the same grip with a 25g counter core weight in my V-Line currently and have played head heavy putters in the past.

 

The 39” JB Microhinge that I had was too long for me and my putting stroke and I did not really care for the Microhinge insert as I have played a White Hot insert for a long time.

I'm curious how that turns out for you, Radeon. I was thinking about the same thing as I loved the OG Jailbird when it first came out, but the extended shaft doesn't do it for me either. I've always preferred 35" putters. 

 

Now having said that, just got the Tri-Hot Seven and that thing is AWESOME! Probably up there for one of my favorite putters next to the OG JB!

While at 35” it improved the JB for me, not enough to replace the V-Line that I have played for many years.

 

Using a Superstroke grip that allows you to play with various counter core weights seemed to help offset the heavy head.

 

Best option for me was JB WH with a Superstroke Zenergy Tour 2.0 with 50g counter core weight at 35”.

 

I played it for a bit and really liked it on short putts but preferred my V-Line on longer lag putts and it already worked well on short putts.

 

I tell myself to just stop buying putters as I putt well enough with the V-Line but I am tempted by shiny, new things.

I agree. When I tried putting with it, I didn't like the feel compared to my Tri-Hot. I felt like I had to mash it to get it on up and against grain, but with the seven I could get a better feel and definitely better lag.

 

I'm the same way though, feel like I'm always set with my rig and then something new comes out and I get all giddy. Only to go back to my original clubs haha. Thanks for the update! Always been thinking about that.

Just remember that swingweight with these longer putters is at your hands and the 14” fulcrum like normal doesn’t matter. SuperStroke weights are the easiest to mess with.

Well my guy somehow saved this grip

too late for me to try this season, but I've got it at a better length for me

Sent back a JB WH 36” that I purchased for a reshaft back to 39”,  and original 17” SS 3.0 grip 

$80 ($40 for shaft, $30 for grip) with 2-day shipping back to me.  Was quoted 4 week turnaround time.
