Bandon Flights from SFO to North Bend

Hello dear forum I was wondering if someone could answer a question for me.

Next August myself and 2 friends will be making our first trip to Bandon from Scotland. We are flying into SFO. I’ve been looking at the flights from SFO to North Bend but I’m unsure on baggage costs. The United website states that there is an additional charge for items longer than 62 inches which my clubs will almost certainly be.

Can anyone advise what United charge to take golf clubs to Bandon?

Well, if your clubs bag is longer than 62 inches that would be an anomaly and a freak bag.   I don't know of any brand of travel bag which is over 54 inches.

Your clubs should be no cost if you have status.  If general, probably $45.

Sorry I got it wrong. It’s 62 inches total. Ie height plus width plus length

Wow - that is an utter joke.  Now that is the flip side....what golf travel case could possibly meet those dimensions?  That would mean you get 5 inches of width and 5 inches of height - that is impossible!

You will be stuck paying about $200 then.

I mean, I guess technically, since it is Bandon, you could find a travel bag that protects just your clubs and accessories with no bag; and then use a bag from Bandon.  Especially if you are taking a caddie.  But I bet they would loan you a bag regardless.

Not sure if that would save any money...but an option.

Your golf clubs will just be considered regular checked luggage. I fly with my clubs frequently and have never been charged on oversized fee.

golf clubs count as a normal checked bag at United. Bag has to be under 50lbs for no additional surcharges.

Good to know they don't enforce their own rules!🤣

See this is the thing there is absolutely no consistency. Some people seem to get away with it fine, some other people seem to get charged. I found a big thread on Reddit about it. Really not sure what to do!

It could be because it's international? Just flew across the US from the west coast to east coast - no charge for those with status (Alaska Air), +$50 charge for those without. I would be shocked if you're going to get hit with over size

ShipSticks on the way there.  That way you'll be assured they will be waiting for you at the resort.  There have been stories of bags getting taken off the SFO-OTH flights to save weight.

@Ralphyboy84 I was going to make the same comment about the SFO-OTH flight. I have heard multiple instances of bags not making the flight.

Ship sticks aren’t an option as we are planning on playing on San Fran. Great profile picture btw. I’m a Carnoustie member

Given that your trip is August 2024, I assume you haven't booked your flights yet.  Flying from SFO, you should consider flying to Eugene or Portland, and taking a van (for hire) from there.  The flight from SFO to OTH is notoriously unreliable and there are probably dozens of threads here and elsewhere discussing how to get from SF to Bandon.

PS...never call it "San Fran" locally!

My advice would be do not fly to North Bend. I’ll never forget the flight I was on from SFO. We were trying to land in about 50 mph winds. Pilot tried from the west and aborted. Then tried the east approach. Plane dropped at least 50 feet in turbulence multiple times and it appeared we came close to hitting the bridge. When he squared up to the runway at about 400 feet up the plane dropped about 100 fee when he banked left to align with the runway. Passengers at this point weren’t just groaning but some were screaming. Pilot immediately hit the gas and we flew right over the runway on the aborted approach. This time he comes on the intercom and says it was obviously unsafe to land at North Bend and we have enough gas to get back to SFO and the weather is clear there so we’re just going back to SFO. The flight attendant immediately did open bar and gave everyone all they could drink on the way back. I think she was indulging as well. I never thought we would crash but it was the first time I felt if he tried that landing the probability was above zero. It was the worse flight I’ve ever been on and I’m never flying to North Bend again.

Would second not flying into North Bend.  I would fly into Eugene or even Medford and drive from there to Bandon, minimal chance your bags will get offloaded due to weight, and the drive is stunning regardless.

I've done it but only during peak season when you're less likely to have major issues, and I've shipped my clubs ahead of time.

I can leave my hometown in the morning and be on property in time for an afternoon round in the summer - can't beat that convenience.

It is also one of the most fun plane rides you can be on because 99% of the passengers are all golfers heading to Bandon.

Twice I've gone in and out of North Bend, and both times had issues. First was a delay on the plane coming into SF to take us to OTH. Ended up getting to Bandon after dark when we had hopes of having the afternoon to see the property (first trip). That's part of the issue with the SF to North Bend flight, it has 3 or 4 flights before that in the northern CA area, and one issue or delay in those legs can mess things up pretty easily. Combine that with potential fog in San Fran and there's lot of room for delays there. Flight out was on time.

Second time the arriving flight landed on time, and we had an entire afternoon on a Wednesday with what felt like the resort to ourselves. When it works out right it's amazing. Flight out was the problem, gorgeous morning but clouds and rain rolled in about an hour before the flight, and the arriving plane couldn't land. It was a Monday flight and I believe at the time there were no Tuesday flights out of that airport, so I had to rent a car and drive through pouring rain to Eugene, a little unnerving on some mountain roads in a tiny rental with bad tires for an overnight flight to arrive home at 6am.

It's risk/reward. If it works out it's perfect, if it doesn't you're scrambling. For my trips going forward I'll be allotting the extra time for travel into Portland or Eugene.

Evidently Medford is not a safe option.  Just de-planed in Salt Lake due to heavy fog at MFR.  Planes circling or diverting for now.

Big bummer...was hoping to get a few hours at the punchbowl late this afternoon.  Blue bird day at the resort.

Medford is notorious for fog.
