Olympics.Β Β Qualification process:Β Β https://www.igfgolf.org/olympic-games/qualification-system

Β

The current standings, based on WWGR:Β https://gsites.brightspotcdn.com/9b/33/a5f57c7e4f47a01aed74f389ebac/olympicwomenrankings-11.03.2024.pdf

The current Women's Reallocation Reserve List:Β https://gsites.brightspotcdn.com/d5/45/b4b5dc3c4c26a9202b85ede6ddca/olympicwomenreallocationreservelist-11.03.2024.pdf

Β

They don't seem to be doing anything fancy if I'm understanding...they just go down the WWGR from the top giving out spots. But once/if your country hits the maximum number of spots, the rest of your players are skipped. (And that max number is 2 except for the USA which gets 4, based on having four in the top 15).Β  Spots are guaranteed for France (not required; Celine qualifies) and for each continent.Β  The latter also doesn't come into play at the moment, I was wrong, Darquea qualifies inherently on merit.

Β

The Replacement list is a bit non-intuitive. I think I've got it. The last (60th) spot currently goes to Dewi Weber, WWGR #312, a second player for Netherlands joining AVD.Β  The highest player just outside that AND from a country that doesn't already have its quota filled is Dottie Ardina #316.Β  So if say Jane Doe from Narnia gets injured and withdraws, the first replacement behind Jane is going to inherently be either (A) the next highest Narnian player,Β if they are ranked higher than Dottie's #316Β  or (B) Dottie to join Bianca as a second player repping PHI, if no Narnian is above her.Β  (Hence Dottie is listed as the replacement a lot...even on Lydia's row, as there is no other high Kiwi player). And then we have (C), the exception case, where if it was Darquea withdrawing, it would be the next highest South American, even though no others are ranked higher than Dottie, in that case the "min 1 per continent" rule would apply.

Β

(Note that the docs in these links say they are as of March 11th but they match the numbers the Rolex site had last week...as of this moment it looks like Ines Laklalech has jumped both Dottie and Dewi....).

thanks @GolfMoose ... the "max 4 players in the Top 15 WWGR" applies to all. I believe South Korea had 4 players at the previous Olympics too, using the same rule.Β  Β

Β

Based on the latest Rolex Rankings... hopefully Amy Yang (RR # 16) and JiYai Shin (RR#18... or others) have a good spring/summer season , to qualify for the Olympics.

Looks like 24 June 2024 = the important cutoff date (based on this:

Happy Mother's Day to all the LPGA moms -- there have been a few additions lately, including Brittany Altomare:

Β

Quote

The Shrewsbury, Mass. native is the third active LPGA Tour member to have a child in 2024, joining Jessica Korda and Chella Choi. Shanshan Feng, who retired from the LPGA Tour in 2022, also announced the birth of her son on April 19.

Second spot for Canada at the Olympics.Β

Β

Couldn't get much closer between Sharp and Szeryk who are deadlocked and at least once seemed to swap places based on the timing details of the RR formula.Β  They've had 2 and 0 LPGA starts this season respectively.Β  Meanwhile the ladies with enough status to play LPGA tournaments, Maude-Aimee Leblanc and the wildcard Savannah Grewal, have not been making cuts. Sure seems like getting in and having a decent finish in one of the two relevant majors could do it for someone.Β  (Battle for the second mens spot equally tight with the four players ranked #2 to #5 for Canada all between #49 and #63 in the OWGR).

Β

Mariajo Uribe, playing a half season for the sole purpose of getting to the Olympics, definitely delivered; another good LET finish has taken her from outside the top 500 at start of year to 173rd.

I'm as much of a fan of the Beloved Rose as anyone but Rolex #6 is CRAZY.

Β

She's played 7 tournaments this season. While she did miss the cut twice, she also has a win, a T5 and a T7.Β

Β

Last season she played in 14 tournaments as a pro. She had a win and 4 top 10s.Β

Β

Two wins and 6 other top 10s in 21 events? Sounds like a World #6 to me.Β

21 events is pretty much a season.Β  For Rose, the calendar splits this stretch, although LPGA schedule wise, it is literally a season (last year's win is being defended this week).

Β

It's not easy to consistently win 2x per year on tour (of course, she hasn't done this yet).Β  However, those that have done so are definitely in the Top 5 to Top 10 range (may have a year with one win, another with three, etc).

Hall of Fame question / perspective - if JYK and Nelly win a couple of additional tournaments, but don't make it to 27 points, do you think of them as worthy?

Β

For me, Brooke and Nelly have the same number of wins and majors, but it feels a bit different.Β  Twice (similar to JYK), Nelly has had some separation vs. the other very very good players on tour.Β  I'm not sure Henderson has ever been "that" good.

Β

As things have progressed, I am kind of OK with the current criteria.Β  Partly, I think these three are really the only players that deserve it.Β  If they get close and don't make it, maybe I'll change my mind.

Β

However, perhaps the argument is not so straightforward.Β  For example, Stacy Lewis' peak higher than Kerr's, but Kerr has more HoF points (one could argue that Lewis is similar to JYK/Nelly if they both stall out around 20 points).Β  Yanni would also be above both of them.

I found that article (RdS is the French version of The Sports Network), it implies she qualified today by shooting -12 in New Jersey.

Β

On the Rolex Ranking...it's kind of inherently arbitrary isn't it or at least dependent on how the formula values different elements...it's not like there is a stone tablet outlining how to weigh recency, field strength, comparability of the different pro leagues etc. Heck even the way the the finishing positions are awarded points based purely on rank....Ruffels got as many points for her 3rd this weekend as Tardy did for winning Blue Bay, even though she was 13 shots out of second and not in contention. Lots of room for differing opinions I'd say.

Looks like it was updated earlier in the day.Β  Green up to 5th, Ruffels jumps 16 more spots to 43rd.Β

Β

Canada Olympics: Sharp's good Epson finish earns more points than Leblanc did making the Mizuho cut and she takes the lead on the second spot.

Do you guys think Nelly locks up her HOF spot by end of 2025 or even end of 2024? She’s got 17 points and needs 27 total to get in. It’s one point win/olympic gold/poy and 2 per major win. She’s already got POY locked up, IMO. I think Nelly would have to not win the rest of the year and someone would have to go out and win multiple majors to even be in the race
