2024 LPGA Season Odds and Ends

So Savannah Grewal gets that same 6.41 points and enters at....469th in the world. For Olympic purposes, now 5th amongst the Canadians. The minimum divisor not her friend but the "recency" element would be.  Presumably she'll be able to play more tournaments than the others chasing the number two spot behind Henderson.

2 changes at back end of top ten WWGR.

Lydia dropped from 7 to 8. Charley moved from 8 to 7.

Xiyu Lin moved from 11 to 10. Atthaya dropped from 10 to 11.

Lydia received 6.41 points for t4 in China. Charley received 11.1 points for 2nd in LET Florida. Lydia has 47 events and Charley has 44.

Patty moves up to 23 solidifying her Olympic spot for now, her last 4 finishes worldwide 1-1-8-4

CW moves up too but only to 34 continue to monitor her on betting sites, Vegas still not showing love.

Based on the length of her absence...do you feel this injury could be severe enough to affect her playing performance and her abiltiy to be a very good consistent golfer (as she has demonstrated) in the long term?

I wouldn’t worry too much yet. It’s been only two-ish months since the injury forced the absence. Nelly was out for longer with her blood clot, and judging from last photo seen, Jeeno is capable of flexing her trouble thumb quite strongly.

What photo are you referring to?

Are you near Phuket?

Are you able/or interested watching the KLPGA at Blue Canyon this week?

Dunno whether @DuenPhen is referring to this Jeeno “retail therapy“ photo?

We have these two from the last two days.

I am actually not in Thailand at all, but I will be keeping a couple eyes on the KLPGA in Phuket. Are you in Thailand?

clearly, shopping has a "numbing" effect, injury be damned.  (it also has a numbing effect on my wallet, from my wife!)

Also Valery Plata beat ex Dookie Ana Belac in a playoff on Epson

That seems to rocket Plata slightly ahead of her countrywoman Mariajo Uribe who has indicated she's retiring this year and basically only playing up until (and because of) the Olympics, hoping to make that her final tournament.  It seems though that they both have a challenge in chasing Daniela Darquea of Ecuador.  I don't fully grasp the Olympic qualification rules but it looks like they are all vying for the "one per continent" spot for South America?

It's likely the strength of the country relative to opponents overall OWGR/Rolex - so on the mens side you are going to get 2 in Argentina and Chile from South America, maybe Colombia too - women's South American golf is not as strong so the divisor is lower - contrary you will see smaller participation in the mens event from the smaller Asian countries vs the women's one.

Perhaps interesting trivia ... but if you're visiting Phuket for the KLPGA tournament this week... i've previously noticed many of Phuket's shops include signs in Cyrillic/ Russian.

Olympics.  Qualification process:  https://www.igfgolf.org/olympic-games/qualification-system

The current standings, based on WWGR: https://gsites.brightspotcdn.com/9b/33/a5f57c7e4f47a01aed74f389ebac/olympicwomenrankings-11.03.2024.pdf

The current Women's Reallocation Reserve List: https://gsites.brightspotcdn.com/d5/45/b4b5dc3c4c26a9202b85ede6ddca/olympicwomenreallocationreservelist-11.03.2024.pdf

They don't seem to be doing anything fancy if I'm understanding...they just go down the WWGR from the top giving out spots. But once/if your country hits the maximum number of spots, the rest of your players are skipped. (And that max number is 2 except for the USA which gets 4, based on having four in the top 15).  Spots are guaranteed for France (not required; Celine qualifies) and for each continent.  The latter also doesn't come into play at the moment, I was wrong, Darquea qualifies inherently on merit.

The Replacement list is a bit non-intuitive. I think I've got it. The last (60th) spot currently goes to Dewi Weber, WWGR #312, a second player for Netherlands joining AVD.  The highest player just outside that AND from a country that doesn't already have its quota filled is Dottie Ardina #316.  So if say Jane Doe from Narnia gets injured and withdraws, the first replacement behind Jane is going to inherently be either (A) the next highest Narnian player, if they are ranked higher than Dottie's #316  or (B) Dottie to join Bianca as a second player repping PHI, if no Narnian is above her.  (Hence Dottie is listed as the replacement a lot...even on Lydia's row, as there is no other high Kiwi player). And then we have (C), the exception case, where if it was Darquea withdrawing, it would be the next highest South American, even though no others are ranked higher than Dottie, in that case the "min 1 per continent" rule would apply.

(Note that the docs in these links say they are as of March 11th but they match the numbers the Rolex site had last week...as of this moment it looks like Ines Laklalech has jumped both Dottie and Dewi....).

thanks @GolfMoose ... the "max 4 players in the Top 15 WWGR" applies to all. I believe South Korea had 4 players at the previous Olympics too, using the same rule.

Based on the latest Rolex Rankings... hopefully Amy Yang (RR # 16) and JiYai Shin (RR#18... or others) have a good spring/summer season , to qualify for the Olympics.

Looks like 24 June 2024 = the important cutoff date (based on this:

Epson Land stays in Florida this week

https://www.epsontour.com/tournaments/ioa-golf-classic/leaderboard

They changed the race for the card to a points system vs $$

Fiona Xu makes her first pro start on US soil, season debut for Ashley Lau who was been busy playing Simone Cup, winning in OZ tour, and playing on KLPGA.

AP gets tee off first wave tomorrow. Alexa Melton is back, she missed the cut by one last week.
