Old vs new apex UW

Recommended Posts

I’ve really enjoyed my Apex UW.  It was a little too low spinning with the stock RDX Black (never a good shaft for me) but once changed to a ADDI it has been a very good club for me.  The face did rust some which was weird, but whatever.

I’ve made a few changes to the top end of the bag though and need to change from the 19 to the 21 degree.  This thing is long for me!  It runs into my 4 wood (16.5) which makes no sense to me considering the lofts and lengths, but I need a little more gap between the two clubs. Who has hit the og and the newer version and what differences are they seeing?  The og version I have is nearly perfect for this type of club for me so I am considering saving a few dollars and getting another one of them.  But new and shiny is always intriguing…

I have hit both on launch monitor and on course and they are very similar. I like the old one a little better, the OG UW spins slightly less but launch was similar, that is a good thing for me.  The OG UW was a slightly longer and was better at the gapping I needed.

The original one is more neutral to me, the new one seems to favor the left side for a right hand player.

How is the turf interaction on the new one compared to the old one?  I don't know what it was about the old one, but I never felt like I could hit it solid thru the turf, but the contact was usually in the center of the face.  It just wasn't very consistent for me.  It got frustrating because I really like the way it set up.

I owned both in a 19* and I much prefer the new version.

The OG had too much right bias for me and i struggled at times with turf interaction. They one is much better with turf interaction and I can work it either direction.

The new version is a great club.

I agree with this 100% and this should be the biggest factor in deciding between the two.  Also agree with comments that say OG is slightly less spinning.  New one to me feels more stable I think due to batwing tech and seems a bit quieter.

Headshapes are very similiar at address between the two.  Some people say that the OG sits more open but once I'm set up, I don't notice much difference.  The sole on the new one has the cutwave sole.

That's good news for me in terms of turf interaction.  I don't know what it was about the previous version, but sometimes it felt like the club would just stop in the turf.  When it got thru, shots came out well, but it just wasn't consistent.  I'll definitely try the new model on the turf when I can find a demo.

OG had a face that seemed to be more open than the new one, at least in the 19* I had in both.

I played 17, 19 and 21 in the OG at some point this past season.  I always seemed to have to rotate the face closed at address as the OG wanted to go slightly right.

Ended up selling the 17 and 19 and am playing a 19 at 41.25” in the new version and 21 @ 40.25” in the OG version.

Feel and sound is a toss up. Ball flight seems slightly higher in the new UW.  Spin I don’t know as they both seemed to stop relatively similarly on the course. Turf interaction was similar between both.

The sole weight is a different size on the new UW so the handful of Callaway weights that I used in the OG and other Callaway fairways do not work in the new UW if that matters.

This was my previous stable of OG UW’s when I was trying to figure out gapping.

I'm a bit concerned about the multiple reports I've seen of the OG rusting (my new one bought on a run out special is about to arrive).

I live in a warm, humid coastal location so anything that can rust usually does.

The face?  If so, for whatever reason, Callaway steel faces have a history of rusting a bit.  I had the same with my Mavrik fairways, but a Magic Eraser would take it right off.

Mine rusted and they(CALLAWAY) sent me a new one....after lecturing me to dry off club before putting cover back on.

Did you close the face on the OG cause it appeared open or cause it went right? Pretty big difference there.

OG UW is as neutral sitting a fairway wood/hybrid can be. Never tried the new one cause I never had a reason to.

17* faded on me so I just got in the habit of closing the face a touch as address. Did not have that issue with the OG 19 that I played at the same length or the OG 21.
